5 out of 5 stars This series DID Pioneer the genre   November 1, 2006
As above: "Acknowledged as pioneering the "survival horror" genre"

If you play the FIRST one, that one was more survival horror, where your in a house attacking zombies, more puzzles lots of clues, attacking odd creatures and giant spiders! Actually, to tell the truth the first one was waaay better than the next too, but not so good graphics ( well, not tooo much of a big difference ). The second one was more 'action' packed, more guns and ammo, more enemies with guns, as well as grenades later on in the game ( dont forget to clean that chimney, hehehe ). The third one is pretty much action packed as well, it's not as good as the second one though, in my opinion. Third one takes place in the wild west. However, I thought the sound track to the third one with the cinematics were brilliant.

On a whim I have bought a copy of this game again - I first played it perhaps 5 years ago.
Oh my God!
Even though I am still dead against the slightly blocky graphics and colours because the PS2 is very fluid I have to admit I still find it completely enjoyable.
And scary!
To be ducking around a badly lit mansion in which you know there are very dark and macabre things - silly. But you do.
I remember feeling the first time through many years back how I had encountered Silent Hill meets Resident Evil meets Koudelka.
Still impressed, gameplay very good for both characters and each lends its own perspective to the game - replay value guaranteed.
Do you dare to be Alone in the Dark?
I'm not sure I can take much more....

5 out of 5 stars My..goodness... what an awful game.   October 24, 2005

I just don't understand this game. How could people possibly praise it for any of its features (or lack thereof)? This game has TERRIBLE loading times, nonsensical dialogue ("Die, Guy!") and the graphics and animation are so jerky that you can't even control Mr. Edward Carnby well at all. But, I am a collector of the worst games of all time, so this one ranks pretty high on the worst games list. This could very well be the worst game I have ever played in my entire life. 1 star for goodness, and 5 stars on the crappiness factor

Alone in the Dark is the series that started the whole survival/horror genre. I played the first one when I was 5 years old (1990) and it screwed me up for life. But this game is the second in the series, which was released for PC, PSone, and I think the Sega Saturn. I'd go more into the series, but I'd tell way too much about how I love the series.

I'll give it to you straight: AitD for PSone isn't a good game by today's standards for most people. In fact, tons of people think it's a "wanna-be Resident Evil". Well, they're stupid. Alone in the Dark has always been more about puzzles and actual survial/horror instead of just running around shooting everything. And it actually has a plot. And a good one at that. Grace Sanders, an 8 year old girl, has been kidnapped by One Eyed Jack and his gang of Pirates/Gangsters. It's up to Edward Carnby (the hero of the series) to rescue her.

There's so much fun to be had in this game, it just sucks that this PSone version has what have to be the worst loading times of any game for the system. Seriously, sometimes it'll load while you're just walking around, and it'll load for 40 seconds. Sometimes while saving the game, it can spend 8-65 seconds saving. It's kinda sad. Even if you play this on a PS2 with the "speed up" option on, it'll still take a long time.

I hope you don't let the loading times get you down. AitD will always be a great series. But you should play them on the computer if you have the option, as the loading times are non-existant most of the time. Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's revenge, the only game in history where you can kill a ghost with a Thompson Gun. Also, the only game where you can dress up as Santa and spank thugs with a paddle. No I'm not making that up.

4 out of 5 stars IT aint so bad   April 28, 2003

Whats wrong with this person above me? When I was in the 5th grade, I could not get enough of this game. I used to run around with a gun killing everyone. This game was awsome and it still is. I reccomend this to people who wants a challenge. The only part bad about it is it can really raise your temper. For example, when they kill you, it has a part when they throw you in the ocean, hang you, hit you with things, and split you in half. But I usually use that as an encouragment to try harder next time. I just wish I could just play it one more time. Those were the good days.
