5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and Works Great!   June 11, 2008
This drive was cheap! Exactly what I needed and is performing very well in my eMac, and quiet. I'm a computer guy, so my advice to you is to always make good regular backups when using a drive as cheap as this one. There is a reason why other drives are more expensive and you always get what you pay for. However, for me, no problems... yet!

1 out of 5 stars Firts months was great   June 21, 2007
I'll tell you a short story about maxtor hard drive. I bouthg a Maxtor L01p200 Internar 7200 RPM 200 Gb Hard DRive. A firts, I was very happy becasue my system reconoized this hard drive. I made three partitions from it. I put different data in each one of the partition. For example, I put music, movies, and photos. The bad story is that its third partition wich one had my photos didn't want to show up. Windows asked me to format the mentioned partition. I had to format and lost all my data. days after, the other two partition were undefinied. I have the hard drive, and I m ready to burn it because i don't have guarantee.

4 out of 5 stars Does the job intended.   June 2, 2007
This is a really fast drive that holds a large amount of data. When I purchased it I was nervous because many people had talked about it melting down. I am using it as a back-up drive so it is not being read all of the time. I do want to mention that this Hard Drive does get very warm. Much warmer then the main HD that I am using. Caveat Emptor!

5 out of 5 stars Working Great   April 11, 2007
Bought two of these drives. They're working great. In my years in the computer field, Maxtor has always provided me quality and long term reliabilty.

Maxtor is typically a trusted name for me, having purchased dozens upon dozens of drives for various purposes during the course of my IT career. So, when I wanted to upgrade my personal portable USB drive (which contains my digital media), purchasing the Maxtor 200GB seemed to be a no-brainer. Let me add that I've used a slew of different drive brands and sizes in a slew of external cases with no issues...

Unfortunately, Maxtor seems to have slipped in the QA department. Typically, if a drive is going to fail, it will fail within the first 30 days. This one did. So did the next one. And THAT was a first EVER in over 10 years in the IT industry. I was pretty much floored.

I found that both failed units exuded excessive heat given the 7200RPM of this drive and both failed after heavy I/O usage causing the heat to increase even more. Now, we all know drives get warm, but this baby (both) were HOT to the touch. Something is amiss in Maxtor factory.

Fortunately, this drive was an active access drive with data duplicated on another drive (also a Maxtor, but 300GB and is working fabulous, with limited heat... go figure) so I did not lose any data.

Given that my 300GB mentioned above, and my personal experience with Maxtor in the past, I'm speculating that the large number of negative reviews indicate simply a manufacturing defect. Move up to the 300GB model, you'll get more space, and hopefully avoid whatever's plaguing Maxtor's 200GB line.
