A great way to honor our past July 21, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This was my first war game, and it is so very interesting to play. Not only are the graphics superior, everything about it is accurate to a point I've never seen before, down to the uniforms, locations, and the weapons. This is a great way took look into the past and see what our soldiers saw in WW2. I'm taking my sweet time learning and playing this game simply because it is so historically accurate that I like to see what things were like in my grandfather's age. But hardcore gamers beware, if you are looking for fancy guns that can shoot with extreme ease and pinpoint accuracy, you will not get that in this game. The developer's main goal is apparent to be historical accuracy, so the guns are not only hard to aim/fire, but they have a certain realism to them. The sights are just like the real guns in real life, and so is shooting them. Now, there are a few arcade-style uses to it, such as the medical kits you can pick up almost anywhere, and the ability to restart at a checkpoint. But other than that, it's great to go into the eyes of a WW2 soldier and re-fight his battles.

This game is much more action oriented and fast-paced than, e.g. the ghost recon series, full spectrum warrior, navy seals, and Brothers in Arms (the other popular WWII game). It's probably more comparable to the Vietnam game "Shell-Shock". It's first person, and there aren't any sqauds to command as there is in the above-mentioned games. However, you run around with squad-mates who lead the way, though wait for you at select points if you fall behind. This quickens the pace of each mission, as you find youself rushing to follow them while finding cover and shooting. The environment is lively and cinematic. The thing that's most enjoyable to me is that sometimes you can't rely on everyone else to plow ahead and it's up to you to employ tactics to push forward under fire. This urgent involvement in the action in the battlefield is remarkable, since many games lack this. Overall, this is a very enjoyable game. Since (1) it's fairly quick to complete, and (2) if I recall correctly, there're only the story-line missions, which cuts down on replayability, you may want to rent this game. As a side-note: There's a mission in a B-24 bomber, which is out of place and lame...save the flight combat games for computer-based simulators.
Best......WWII Game.........Ever December 11, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This game, my friends, is quite possibly the finest World War Two video game that has been made to date. If you are a fan of the Call of Duty series already, you will not be dissapointed by this game. The graphics are outstanding, to the point where your can see 5 o'clock shadow on your fellow soldiers, and make out the serial number on the back of your M1 Garand. Grenade explosions, often a sore spot with me, are shown for what they really are, simple explosions, not the hand-held nuclear devices they are made out to be in other games. The game goes out of its way to show the different weapons the enemy soldiers use, whether they be French (Yes, French!), Itallian or German. Speaking of which, it's a referishing change of pace to fight different bad guys then the Germans. Also, Airplanes make their first signifent role in the Call of Duty Series, for in Big Red One, not only can you shoot then down, but a entire level takes place on board a B-25 Liberator bomber. All in all, this is defently a worthy game to buy. Five stars all the way.
PS2: Call of Duty: Big Red One November 14, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought the normal version. It is outstanding. I have been waiting for an "American" only Call of Duty. I have played the first 3 chapters and I am hooked. The commands are the same but the story line follows the 1st Inf Division through WW2. You get to ride in Half-tracks, tanks, fire 75mm AT, German Bazookas and so forth. It is an outstanding game and wished they would have made this last year. The only problem is I wish you could jump over barriers.
