Product Description This special collection combines updated versions of the original classic real-time strategy game Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and the Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal expansion set with the Official Strategy Guides by Prima Publishing for both games and free Internet play over Battle.net that allows up to 8 opponents from around the world to compete in fantastic warfare. Take command of either the Human or Orcish armies in this epic saga of fantasy warfare
Amazon.com Review WarCraft II isn't exactly the freshest real-time strategy game on the market, but that doesn't mean it's any less fun than it used to be. For those of you who missed it the first time around, WarCraft II is set in a fantasy realm where knights hack at trolls with swords, deadly spells crisscross the battlefield, and powerful fortresses dot the landscape. The game pits the evil orcs against the humans, letting players choose whichever side they want in a series of battles over the world. With the WarCraft II: Battle Chest, players can experience the magic of the original game along with the added enhancements of the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion pack. Rounding out the Battle Chest is a complete strategy guide that will walk beginners through the basics and provide more experienced players with advanced tactics so they can master the game. That's good, because players will need all the help they can get challenging other WarCraft II fans online. It's possible to challenge one to eight other players on the developer's free Battle.net servers, while more solitary gamers can immerse themselves in one of the fun single-player campaigns or stand-alone missions. WarCraft II's finely balanced gameplay has lost none of its charm, even if the graphics are aging. In most missions you start with a small force and must gather enough resources to build a strong base of operations that can field a formidable army. We had the most fun with the set-piece battles, where we had to shepherd a few beleaguered troops across an enemy-infested map to either link up with a larger force on the other side or protect a hero on his way to some goal. Blizzard is famous for delivering games with terrific production values, timeless gameplay, and lots of extras, and the WarCraft II: Battle Chest is an inexpensive reminder of why the company has such a terrific reputation. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: - A true classic with timeless gameplay
- Multiplayer mode is a lot of fun
- Plenty of campaigns and scenarios to satisfy the single-player set
Cons: - Graphics are showing their age
Amazon.com Product Description Blizzard Entertainment presents WarCraft II: Battle Chest, a set that combines updated versions of the original classic real-time strategy game WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness and the WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal expansion set. It also includes the official strategy guide by Prima Publishing for each game and free Internet play over Battle.net, allowing up to eight opponents from around the world to compete in fantastic warfare. Play as either the noble humans or the brutish orcs as you experience the epic saga of Azeroth, from the orcs' initial invasion to the humans' quest to forever seal the Dark Portal between the two worlds. Along the way, you'll need to carefully manage your limited resources as you train fantastic troops, research powerful magicks, and construct buildings and ships to carry the battle over land, sea, and air.

A Classic RTS April 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I didn't really have a chance to play Warcraft that much, if at all, when it was in its hayday I have recently rediscovered this classic and have found msyself becoming addicted. Warcaft 2, much like the previous installment in the series, is a real-time strategy game in which you must chose to play as either the orcs or the humans in a bid to become ruler of the land and in this sequel, the seas and oceans. The gameplay may seem simple at first, especially to gamers who are used to more modern games. However, once you move past the first couple of stages, the game does begin to challange the player with a mixture of maintaing a city and trying to acomplish a set of objectives. While several other games have worked with this concept, few have ever perfected like Blizzard did with the original Warcraft games. Also, what makes picking up the Battle.net edition worth it is that you get both Warcraft 2 and you also get it's expansion pack on one disc. The game also has the option of free multiplayer, but have yet to try this option out. So, whether your looking for a bit of nestolgic gameplay or just looking for an alternative to the repetive nature of today's games, give Warcraft 2 a try.
Great RTS Game February 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't own this game, but have played it in school. I haven't played the campaign missions, but have played multiplayer almost everyday for 2 months. The graphics are dated, but that isn't where the fun is. For me it is the fast paced-ness of the game that keeps me hooked. Unlike most RTSs I have played, each misson doesn't have to take an hour and a half to complete. If you know how to build, it can take you 5 minutes to defeat a game aginst a single computer opponent. You can also build crazily, and go like that, or you can develop a strategy and either way, you stand a chance of winning.
My suggestion for those just starting: 1 build your hall and 4 or five farms while cranking out peons/pesants like crazy. Then build 3 barracks and make another town near another gold mine. Don't stop building peons unless you are running out of money.
Waecraft 2 an AMAZING game! August 5, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I havent played this game in 6 years and Im trying to get it again although I have Warcraft 3 I love Warcraft 2 more and I can't find it but that won't stop me from getting it. That's how much I love Warcraft 2 and that's how good it is. My favourite part of this game is the Battle net. because your not playing against dumb old computers but some skilled players. That's why I love Warcraft 2 Battle net. aside from the trash talk. I would suggest highly getting this game because you don't know what your missing! seriously.
One of my all time favorite RTS games ever April 28, 2005 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Although Warcraft 3 and its expansion have come out within the last few years, I still prefer Warcraft 2 a bit more. Yes the game looks kinda dated now, but it is still a blast to play. The game was fun in that it never got too complicated or anything so that newcomers could always have a good time. The map editor was easy to use and the online play in the Battle.net edition will keep you busy for a while. Anyways, if you've only played Warcraft 3 then it might be difficult for you to enjoy this game since it is so old, but if your willing to look past the graphics then you'll find a real gem.
