Set inrichly detailed 3D environments, each with its own distinct styles and themes, Rau, a fierce warrior, must battle the denizens of the dark world to prevent the invoking of an ancient spell that holds the power to unleash great evil throughout the land. Along with his loyal and trusted spirit guide, Kuzo, a large black bird, Rau embarks on an exhilarating journey that requires a combination of stealth, aggressive-action moves and calculated planning. Kuzo plays a strategic role in th

Amazon.com Review
Though by no means perfect, The Mark of Kri is an original and completely realized game experience. With an innovative fighting system, graphics that are better than you thought the PS2 could deliver, and lots of cool extra character abilities, the game offers a fresh take on the basic guy-with-a-sword scenario.

The Mark of Kri offers some kind of story about dark times coming and bad guys roaming the countryside, or some kind of yadda yadda like that, but the only important thing to know is that you must wander around collecting stuff and kill guys who attack you. There are several things that make this more interesting than it sounds, most prominently the amazing environments of moss-covered ruins. Reportedly former Disney animators were among the developers, and it shows, not only in the character designs and movements, but in the excellence of the sound and lighting effects that subtly deepen the game's lush, ominous atmosphere.

Then there's the fighting system, which lets you assign a button to each attacker, so you can attack enemies on all sides without worrying about which direction you're facing. This is a fairly simple matter at first, but requires more strategy and skill as the game progresses. The Mark of Kri includes a stealth mode, which allows you to sneak up and strike lethal blows before enemies can sound the alarm, and there's a bird you can send ahead to scout hostile territory before you enter it. These extra features keep the ol' killing-crowds-of-bad-guys routine from growing tedious.

We have only two serious complaints: one, the environments are not as seamless and interactive as they could be (if there's a cliff, shouldn't you be able to jump off it?), and two, there are too many things to keep straight, stuff like magic items and combo moves (but then again, the author is unusually lazy, and this probably won't bother most gamers). Overall, though, The Mark of Kri is rock solid, graphically beautiful, and thoroughly engaging. --David Stoesz

Pros:

  • Beautiful graphics and art direction
  • Innovative and fun fighting system
  • Extra character abilities
  • Edgy, atmospheric sound effects and music
Cons:
  • Convoluted system of items to collect
  • Environments are not interactive enough
  • Some cutscenes are lengthy and pointless

4 out of 5 stars Great game, but too short   November 10, 2008
This was the first stealth-action game I ever played and if your interested in playing games in this genre this is a good place to start, as it is nowhere as hard as the Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell series. The game only has 6 levels/stages (same difference). There are 5 weapons: hand-to-hand, sword, bow and arrow, taiaha (Maori spear) and battle axe. Rau, the protagonist can do combo with melee weapons that will result in a fatality if performed correctly, this however takes timing, and since the game emphasizes stealth over fighting you will probably end up button mashing and blocking in order to win fights. The last level is the only one that is not stealth-oriented and straight hack and slash, which you will do with the axe. The game has no bosses, but you usually have to defeat some enemies at the end of the level to move on the next level. I was kind of disappointed that there was no big boss to defeat at the end. It took me round 10 hours to beat this game, but there is extra gameplay if you opt to complete all the level and arena challenges.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Game   September 30, 2007
I found the Mark of Kri to be very original. The graphics were very good for the PS2 and the fighting was fun. I found the game to be a bit short and sometimes a little repetitive. Also the environment is a little difficult with your character getting caught up on things and not being able to utilize many things. The use of the bird was unique and I liked the fact that you can train for special attacks and moves before each mission. A veteran game playing will go through this one quick, so this is probably a rental for a hard core player.

4 out of 5 stars An awesome action game!   August 6, 2006

This game gets a definite thumbs-up from me. It is equally well crafted in its gameplay, graphics/sound, and atmosphere. The story is not bad for a non-rpg, though you won't get a whole lot of character development.

You are Rau, a young warrior trained to fulfill a prophecy and protect the land from a vile clan that wishes to unleash powerful dark magic. Through your quests, you develop your skills, expand your weaponry, and uncover the plot to bring about your own downfall.

The graphics are GORGEOUS! The environments you play through range from tropical jungles to ancient cities in winter. The art direction here is primo. It all seems to have influences from the barbarian fantasy genre with ancient south american/ polynesian motifs mixed in. Very cool.

Play control was excellent. The game uses a unique targeting system that allows you to quickly shift your focus during combat and even allows multi-targeting for some of Rau's wider ranging attacks. Stealth kills are also an option, allowing you to thin out the herds of enemies before they catch on to your presence. The ability to send out your bird helper is a nice touch, allowing you to plot your strategy and find a way to take out as many baddies without getting overwhelmed.

It definitely pays to learn the different melee combos and know which weapon's are most suited for a certain situations. Once you get skilled in combat, it feels good to mop the floor with a group of enemies that used to give you trouble. This game is definitely not a typical button-masher. In fact that's a good way to a quick death. So if you like combat games that require a little more thought in combat then this is a good choice.

The story is a simple one and does not involve a great deal of dialogue. In fact I don't think the main character gets any at all, which is odd considering the story mostly revolves around him. But the characters you do meet are interesting enough.
Rau's trainer could have used a different voice over though. I've heard the voice before somewhere (you'll know what I'm talking about when you hear it). It reminds me of one of those 7-foot tall smoker's voices that shout out deals in a sinister tone on national car commercials. "Get great deals on 2006 SUVs with no money down." Kinda took me out of the element when I heard him during training sessions.

Overall, I highly recommend the game. If you want a better than average combat/action game, you'll find that this is one of the better games in the genre.

This mark of kri game is fun but only like three levels long! This has plenty of blood, gore, and violance for me but it is just too short for me. The good thing is though I only bought it for two bucks at game stop!! So overall this game is fun but too short!

2 out of 5 stars the mark of kri, more like the mark of shame   November 22, 2005

it is said that "the mark of kri" is new and innovative, but to me it is a real headache. the game begins well enough. you play as rau, a barbarian that has trained for years with your sword. and what a swordsman he is, among the stuffed dummies. yes rau hasnt seen real combat for he has been training at an inn with his master waiting for a chance to venture out into the real world searching for adventure. that day finally comes when the inn keeper tells you of some banditts that have been killing road travelers. this is rau's chance to prove himself as a true warrior and gain some fame. this is when you get your first chance to put your sword into something other than a stuffed dummy. when rau finally engages an enemy this is where the "fun" is supposed to begin but well...i would have more fun poking myself in the eye then use the combat system of "the mark of kri". you see, when you engage an enemy you have to use the right analog stick to focus your attention. when you do this an icon appears over the enemies head. it indicates what button to press to attack the enemy. additionally you can unleash combo attacks which again seemed like a great idea until you try to use them on your opponent. the enemies from the get go are tough, they block almost all of your attacks and they counter attack often. so pulling off a combo attack is nearly impossible. but the reward is somewhat worth it, for you get to see rau impale, mutilate and smash his enemies. on to the next portion of the game that is probably the best feature of all. the cinamatics are great. as they open one by one the scenes are drawn on parchment with a ink pen giving you something different and in my opinion helps to keep you awake. the game is very short and the final boss fight is just a quick button mash and a ending cinamatic which by the way is very anticlimatic. the graphics are ok and the environments are well done. but that just isnt enough to give this game good enough replay value. i am reluctant to buy the newest installment of the game but it looked like it had been imporved since the last. if you want my opinion i would avoide this game at all costs. i managed to snag it used for only 7.99, but after playing it i would only pay about 3.99 for its lack of entertainment. the mark of kri...deserves the mark of shame.
