5 out of 5 stars Perfect!   July 5, 2008
If you like action/adventure games, you have to get God of War. The graphics are good, the story is good, the puzzle element is time-consuming but won't drive you crazy.

I can't say I would change anything about this game. The replay value is decent, there is no multiplayer but that is forgivable.

It was a must-have when PS2 was the top of the gaming world, now it's a steal at less than $20. Even new Sony customers who just got a PS3 won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Solid effort   April 5, 2005

Perhaps I am really picky, hard to please and even harder to impress- this game was good...not as great as the hype surrounding it says, but a good and solid effort.
The material and subject matter were awesome and the developer spent a great deal of time making everything look right and neat and polished. As with other games I review, I like to look at the technical aspects of a game and save the review of plot points for someone else.
The control scheme in this game is good, and I think that every button the dual shock2 controller has been utilized to the fullest extent. The attack buttons and combinations are easy to remember and it is easy to access magic and defense and combo attacks within short succession.
The frame rate is great, smooth game play with the most minimal of load times between some areas. The in-game movies were polished and added to the story...like others have said, this game was like playing an interactive movie...the story was not the greatest, but the material was fresh and fun and overall entertaining.
This game spent something like 3 years in development and production. 3 years. That is a long time. My only beef is that if a game has been in development for that long, how come the end result only takes me 9 hours to beat? I felt short changed, somewhat cheated out of my 49.99 or whatever it cost on release day. In fact, I traded the game in two days later for store credit at my local EB store.
The replay value is almost non-existent...even with the addition on challenges that get you new armor and the addition of an even harder "god" mode. The game is still essentially the same as when you played it the first time. Just a bit harder. To me, that is cheap. I dont want to replay the same game with harder enemies. I want something new, new areas, new enemies, new weapons, new stuff! I want something as fresh and progressive as the game itself.
My only other beef is with the nudity included in the game. I am a 25 year old male, I am an adult. But for some reason, digital breasts just dont add anything to this game. To me it shows that developers are pushing the envelope for the sake of pushing it. Nudity did not one thing to add to this game. The fact that it is in there only shows that the developer and publishing house thought it would make more testosterone ridden teens want to buy their game. For me, it is an insult. It is a game...nothing more. Your graphics engine is more impressive with lighting effects and particle effects that with the inclusion of disporportionate women who wear either nothing or next to nothing.
As a parent, I would not buy this game for my child. I would not buy this game for the price they are asking for it. As a gamer, I expect to feel as if I have gotten my money's worth in my purchase...with this game I do not feel as if I did. Rent this game...you will beat it in no time.
I liked this game, but for some reason, I just didnt feel as if it warranted a purchase on my part. Parents...this game should be kept away from younger children and those under the "M" rating age limit. It was definatley marketed at an older audience, but had nothing substantial enough to offer.

4 out of 5 stars They just keep coming...   April 4, 2005

Remember those beat-em up games such as Final Fight, Rival Turf, T.M.N.Turtles...etc.? You know the games where you constantly mash buttons while endless baddies keep coming. Well, if you are itching' for that lost feeling, look no further, because GOD OF WAR has arrived.

The game obviously isn't a 2D side-scroller like the above mentioned; it is however, a 3D linear path scroller with plenty of evil doers needing some smack down. Think "Prince of Persia," "Jaxx and Daxter," "Devil May Cry," or even "Onimusha" style exploring worlds. In these worlds/levels, "God of War" has plenty of puzzles for you to solve, while hitting you with a demanding hordes of enemies. I have to admit, some of the puzzles are challenging which requires a bit of brain power. The downfall is you feel the need to have control of the camera, but you don't. Sometimes you would like to get a better perspective of the layout, but the game won't let you. However, the game does a decent job of balancing out what you really need and don't need to see while you move throughout the game.

There are only a few bosses, but plenty of minions in which you will encounter over and over again. Even though you learn several tactics along the way, I basically used 2 moves throughout the game. Serious.

The background and scenery is gorgeous while the music is top-notch. There is an overabundance of blood if you crave that sort of thing. The cut-scenes are impressive and I must say, it is probably one of the better video game story lines to hit the market. I could definitely see a big-budget motion picture based off of this game.

Now it may seem like my description of the gameplay is weak, but in actuality it is pretty intense. Yes, you encounter endless groups of enemies, but there is some satisfying destruction in the palm of your hands. With the whipping of your duel blades and the use of the Greek Myth powers, you will be sure to have some fun. Plus, a good handful of the puzzles keep things interesting. Overall, I enjoyed this game. I had a hard time putting it down, but I managed to do so in between work and other obligations. I don't imagine I will be going back and playing it again as it doesn't have a high replayability factor. (Not much into button mashing a swarm of enemies over again, now that I have conquered it) On the other hand, you are treated with a bunch of extras such as: Making of the game, deleted levels, concept art, GOD MODE, challenges, etc.

PARENTS: This game is not for your children. There are some savage and brutal blood scenes and the game did go a little too far with the sex scene (in which you control). I won't go into detail, but really, is this necessary to be included in a game???
