A great port of the greatest game ever made. December 17, 2008 Rayman is one of those games that came out as fairly inconsequential, but has aged very, very well.
I bought the game on the N64 back in 2002 and really liked it. It sort of reminded me of mix between Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot. It was like Crash because of the linear nature of the levels. Though some exploration is encouraged, it overall is a set path throughout the game.
Yet it has a cool mix, since it does have the giant, lush environments that Mario64 offered. The levels are all very big, very detailed, with very low loadtimes.
As pertaining to the DS version, I think this is a pretty decent port. The game is virtually identical to the N64/Dreamcast/Playstation version. Unlike Mario 64, the developers weren't feeling very creative, and didn't add extra characters or minigames.
Gameplay. Looking at the reviews here, I guess a lot of people found the gameplay hard. I didn't really think it was. If you use the thumb stylus on your left thumb and use the buttons on the right, I found the controls pretty straightforward. Even if you hate the touchscreen more than life itself, you can always use the D-Pad to move around.
Overall, this is a pretty great port to all you Rayman fans out there. This is definitely one of the greatest games, if not the greatest, and I think it's worth a purchase, though I'm not sure about the $60 price tag here on Amazon.
Fun with one frustrating element December 12, 2008 When Rayman uses the flying walking shell, you crash all the time. You can't avoid it, as it's the only way to get to the next 'place'. I haven't been able to master it yet so I'm stuck - this is the only frustrating bit, I enjoy the rest...so, until I figure it out I can only give a four star rating. I have to say that the underwater places are fantastic.
Tween Review July 3, 2008 WOW... i have had this game for about a year now... and man, do i LOVE IT!!! When i first got this game, i had never heard of Rayman in my life, but now i'm hooked. The graphics rule, and i must admit that i've had to look online to get through a few levels, but it is still SO FUN! I'm not even done with it yet... but i'm slow... VERY slow... so if you are into adventure/puzzle video games... Rayman DS is for YOU!
