Editorial Review Yo, DJ wannabes: mix your mad medley of music by using this creativity tool for the PlayStation. Don't mistake this disc for a game--it's a song creator that acts as a 24-track mixing machine. But there are limitations to this hip tool--namely memory space, which on the PlayStation is scant at best. Still, the disc itself contains over 1,500 pre-recorded musical riffs and over 3,000 instrument sounds for you to mix and match as you like. Once the basic music is laid down, players can tinker with the sounds, adding effects such as reverb. In addition, the MTV Music Generator enables budding artists to sample music from their own audio CDs, but this is where the memory problem comes into play, limiting your samples to mere seconds. No prior knowledge of music theory or editing is required to play with this disc, and when using the pre-recorded music snippets, which are varied and numerous, the resulting songs can be quite amazing. While this piece of software may be better suited for a PC with a fat hard disk full of storage space, MTV Music Generator is a completely original title for the PlayStation, and it manages to cleverly use the system's capability to play music in a unique way. --Jeff Young Pros: - Easy to operate--no music experience or editing required
- One of the only discs for the PlayStation that encourages creativity
- Much fuller content than other music tools aimed at younger children
Cons: - Limited memory may frustrate users who want to sample their personal music collection

.I have had all 3 versions and rebought this one August 8, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I originally bought this game my Freshman year of college in 1999. It took us a long time to ge the hang of it, but we eventually got it. After that, we'd be up for hours and hours all night making hot beats, and remaking instrumentals to songs that we used to like. The Disc got scratched up twice, and I had to replace it both times. Eventually, I went and got a Ps2. I bought the second version, which was so muchmore confusing, and the 3rd version not too long ago which was so limited that the only thing you can do on it is place some of the vocals with tracks. The problem is that you cant speed it up or slow it down and you cant even create your own melodies. So anyway, I rebought the original PS1 version to play on my PS2. Started playing it again last night. This is the version where u can create everything thing from the drum pattern adn melody speed, to the instrument pitch. I feel like Dr. Dre. I'm making beats that people like T.I. and 50 Cent could probably have hit records with. Now I have surround sound system also, so the music sounds even better, and more realistic. Memory gets filled up kinda quick, but if you delete the instruments riffs and sounds that you are not using as you go along, you can keep the memory down. Also I never had luck with the audio samplet part before, but I will try it again. I hear that there are ways to record the songs onto CD, so I'm researching that as well. Overall , the game is about a 9.5 out of 10. I made 3 super off the chain tracks already. Unfortunately U have to have a PS1 memory card to save it so I had to let them go. I went and got one for like 2.00 with extra memory from the local game shop, so as soon as I get off work, It's BACK TO THE LABB!!!!
Can't Get Any Better Than This!! April 8, 2003 I've had this game since January of 2000 and still play it regularly. I, like everyone else here, appreciate that Playstation finally came out with something where you can be creative. Very minimal music knowledge is neccessary for this game. I have created literally hundreds of songs on here and am not the least bit disappointed in its performance or sound. Although, I do agree that the samples take up too much space. I don't even use that option. Hey, no one mentioned the Jam Session part! If you have a multi-tap, 4 controllers and 3 other friends, it gets quite interesting!! Buy this game. I swear it's worth every penny!! -Raven Sweetwater
Simple Music Creation January 28, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I fell in love with this game because of its simple interface. Memorize a few button presses and you can be putting songs together in no time. Pick from hundreds of melodies, bass lines, drum parts, sound effects, and percussion samples and paste them together to make a song. It's that easy. You can even create your own riff if you've got the patience for it. Then you can even create your own music video to along with your song. This game did not recieve as much attention as it should have, but I strongly reccomend it. The only two flaws are the slowdown that occurs from time to time, especially during the video editing, and the songs take up an enormous amount of space on your memory cards.
got it good January 1, 2003 i got it quick and in great shape.
Great service December 6, 2002 I want to tell you first of all that when I ordered this program I made the mistake of not specifying what platform. I didn't realize that I was suppose to order for the pc and that it was advertising for the playstation. When I received it I got a playstation version. The people at this company are so caring that I sent it back after calling them and even though they didn't advertise for the pc version they located one in their back stock and sent it to me immediately. What service!!!!!
