Product Description
Some video games the masses can enjoy, and some video games cater to the hard-core fanatic of a specific genre. Flight sims are a good example, as are most golf games. What many don't realize, though, is that even a genre as innocuous as the simple platform shooter has a hard-core fan base - a league of players that can run faster, shoot longer, and generally destroy any side scroller in one sitting. These blister-thumbed few need something better, faster, harder. Mega Man X4 was created for them.First, you must be a fan of the motif to even understand this game. By motif, I'm talking about anime and all the Speed Racer-esque backgrounds, bizarre character names, and recycled sound effects that go along with it. In addition to the game's general aesthetics, all the cinematic scenes are 100 percent anime, right down to the shamefully bad voice acting. The first scene introduces you, by means of a frantic music video, to all the games major characters. From there, you are thrust into the action of the game's first two-stage level that serves as a teaser to the rest of the story.Through much in-game exposition, we learn that General and Colonel (great names!), under instruction from the evil Sigma, have incited Repliforce, an army of reploids formerly allied with our heroes, the Maverick Hunters, to riot. Following Sigma's plans to destroy the human race that created them, they have demolished a Maverick Hunter base and promise to continue the destruction until their final weapon is complete, and the earth is vaporized, or something like that. It is, of course, up to Mega Man X and his faithful partner, Zero, to foil their plans and save the earth from destruction.

5 out of 5 stars The best of all the Mega Man games. Period   October 15, 2006
I had played every Mega Man game up until X4 came out, and I can safetly say this is the best one ever. X5-X8 just had pictures with words which I thought was totally lame. With X4 they had complete cartoon anime scenes with full dialogue and how awesome was that? The game play was fantastic, the graphics were fantastic, you could play as Zero all the way through the game, Mega and Zero had their own story elements. Awesome game. One of the best ever.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for newcomers to the X series   July 20, 2005
I've been a Megaman fan nearly my entire life, and after 16 years of great gaming, I still play and enjoy all the MM titles I own. After completing the 3 mind blowing SNES MMX titles, I was concerned that a MM game on the Playstation wouldn't be nearly as good as the SNES games.

I couldn't have been more wrong! Honestly, I was absolutely blown away by this game. Sure, it still can't compare with the awesome SNES Megaman X titles, but who cares? This game rocks! It retains many of the qualities which made the SNES titles so much fun to play. You still collect heart tanks, sub-tanks, and armor upgrades from Dr. Light's capsules as you proceed through the game. You still battle 8 different maverick bosses, and the stages feature many different breathtaking environments.

A new feature to the X series which I was very happy to see was anime FMV cutscenes! These anime style cutscenes really help move the story along, as well as add a new twist to the series. The only problem with the cutscenes is that the voice acting can be exceedingly painful to listen to. Oh well, at least the voice acting in X4 shows improvement over that of the earlier Megaman 8.

Yet another new feature which many fans of the X series have come to appreciate is the ability to play as Zero throughout the entire game! At the start of the game, you are given the option to choose between Megaman X or Zero. But don't expect perfection, because whoever you choose, you will be stuck with for the rest of the game. This is the only problem with the character system. Sometimes, midway through the game, I felt an urge to play as the other character, which meant that I would have to restart the game from the beginning with that character. The music also didn't come anywhere near the awesome tunes which the SNES titles had to offer, although the music in X4 was at least appropriate...

But the good qualities of X4 far outweigh the bad. Basically, if you're a Megaman fan, you must not pass on X4. The cutscenes, new environments and weapons, and ability to choose different characters will keep you playing this game for longer than you would expect. If you don't at least try it, you're dead inside.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the second best in the Mega Man X series   June 22, 2005

Mega Man X4 is the second best game in the X series.

Pros:
-2 different scenarios: play as X and receive various arm-shot weapons, or play as Zero and learn various sword techniques.
-Beautiful 2D graphics.
-New parts system.
-Bosses are new in style.
-Beautifully animated anime cutscenes.
-Cool new characters.

Cons:
-A little easy sometimes.
-HORRIBLE voice acting!

The bottom line: this is a very fun game to play, but there is one thing you might want to hear: Zero is not for beginners. His moves are much harder to learn. However, masters should challenge themselves playing it with Zero. If you enjoyed the first three (X3 is the best), then I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh, X4   July 17, 2004

Megaman X4, a game rivaled only by the SNES MMX titles! This game is definitely a well polished piece to have in your collection of megaman titles. Gameplay is great, with lots of "move too slowly and die" areas, cool bosses(although Capcom apparently ran out of cool names), interesting levels, and a very interesting plot. One of the more notable features of this game is the ability to play as Zero. This was originally introduced in X3, but then he was weak and couldn't fight bosses. But this time he's back and ready to kick some arse! In this game, you can choose between Megaman or Zero. Who ever you pick is who you are the rest of the game, which means Zero has more than one life and can kill bosses! Woo! Anyways, this game has a good level of challenge, being delivered more in getting through the stages than the bosses(although some can make you wanna bite a chunk of your controller off and spit it across the room, i.e. final boss). The weapons are really cool this time around. Capcom apparently had some real thinking time about weapons after two games' worth of dull weapons. The plot of this game is AWESOME, the Repliforce forms a Coup and they are labeled Mavericks. And in this game(and unfortunately, only this game, unless you look outside of the X series and count MM8), you can see the plot come to life in awesome anime cutscenes! (Capcom went lazy after this and made X into an unfortunate slide show with subtitles.) I haven't really listened to the music in this game, cuz I was too busy blowing stuff up in the enemy filled levels, so I can't rate it, lol. Anyways, this, X5, and the SNES titles are all great games and I would suggest you stock your gaming library with all of them(good luck on X3, cuz you'll need it unless you're made of money!). This game is a definite must have for someone new to the series and someone who grew up with the series. At least borrow it from a friend or your life will be shrouded in misery and pain!!! Muah hahaha!
