The best pool game ever? January 24, 2005 This is, quite simply, the best pool game ever made. It achives this accolade by not trying to create a pool simulation at all, but by adding trick stages, points targets and super moves into a normal table clearance. The responsive, 'simple to use hard to master' controls and the awesomely exagerated spin system combine to produce one of the most addictive games ever. The music and minimalist sound add a laid back pool shark atmosphere to the game. Get it bought, you'll never play anything else!
Unique, fun, and difficult June 19, 2002 Side Pocket by Data East is definately an original set-up for a pool video game. It uses more of an "arcade" set up than simulation but it is fun. First off, despite not using alternate views of the pool table, Side Pocket offers excellent graphics in-between stages and does not get enough credit for having probably the best music video game in 16-bit marketing history. The laid-back soft jazz style tunes are perfect to listen to during the game or in jukebox mode, they are almost refreshing enough to conceive a kid to. However, with every great game there are drawbacks. To advance to a new level you are required to accumulate a certain amount of points for each level, which is fine but after you advance to the second or third level you are forced to nail down a required "trick shot" to advance to the next level, which can be nearly impossible....this game does have a "trick shot" mode where you can practice these shots but good luck, you will need it. An overall superb game-i would still recommend trying out Side Pocket, it is the best pool game to date in my opinion.
THIS is a great pool game! December 29, 2001 Back in 1995, me and my older brothers rented this game and had one of the best times ever, playing Side Pocket. The graphics mainly consist of just looking at a pool table the whole time and watching your player take the shots. In other words, the graphics aren't really anything memorable, but they are well done. The control is real easy for anybody to master. There is always some arrows showing where the ball will go when you take a shot, and the control isn't sluggish or overly responsive. When it comes to gameplay, Side Pocket doesn't have spectacular variety, but it is good enough. In the one player mode, you get to compete against the computer controlled players and tour many cities on your quest to become the champion. For you pool sharpshots, there is a trick mode with several set-ups, making for tough challenges. Finally, the most fun you will get out of Side Pocket (in my opinion), is playing the game with a friend in two player mode. Gameplay wise, Side Pocket is a great all-around game. It's always fun to play a game of pool, and from time to time, there is a blue star that appears in a certain pocket. If you shoot the ball into a pocket while a blue star is in it, you'll earn yourself some extra points. The bottom line is that if you like pool in real life or in video games, you will definitely like Side Pocket. The only drawback to Side Pocket is that there are not any options for different kinds of pool games such as 9-Ball, it's just good ol' pool in this title, but it is overly fun and addicting.
Quite a poor game. November 15, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a really bad game if you love pool or if you hate it. Because there are no real modes of play. You start into a competition right away, there is no practice session of even a 9 ball game! The configuration to play the actual pool is pretty simple, like every other game, chose the angle of the stick, select the power that you hit the ball and so on. Its pretty simple, not enough to keep anyone interested, especially for the price.
