IL-2 Holds its Own to Current Games July 19, 2008 IL-2 is by far the best flight simulator ever created. The graphics in it are very competitive with current games(eight years later). This WWII simulator offers missions with every country involved in the war. The graphics on the planes and artillery is very realistic. The cockpits are the closest you can get to being in a real plane. However, compared to other simulators it seems very hard. This is because it is so realistic. IL-2 1946 Sturmovik is by far the best combat simulator ever produced and will continue to be a hit for many years.
WWII Flying Experience May 14, 2007 This first person cockpit game is very indepth. I have had several other flying games that only touched the surface of the flying experience but this one really delved into the total flying chalenge. You can either fly a real wartime mission that has every true detail of a historic attack or call up a quick mission [my personal favorite] that you can choose to fly any of the Russian or German aircraft that were in commision at the time of the war against any of the opposing sides armor including ground weapons giving the whole experience a new level of both difficulty and enjoyment. The actual flying details are so realistic that it makes you feel that you are actually in control of a real aircraft. I would recomend to purchase this game for anyone that finds first person flying exciting and enjoyable.
Poor flight model December 10, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've logged over 70 hours on MS Flight Simulator X (including beating the course record on the challenging Red Bull time coure), so that is my standard for flight model realism. By that standard, IL-2 is garbage. If planes actually flew that poorly in WW II, half of the pilots would have crashed within minutes of take off because they couldn't get the aircraft to generate enough lift or speed. Unless I trick the P-39 sim model by doing stupid little 20 foot drives to build up speed, it flies flat at 170 for minutes, even at max throttle.
Once the pilot gets the plane above 200 it handle all right, but most of those lucky WWII pilots who made it off the ground would have died after their first moderately aggressive bank, because the planes stall precipitous without warning into full-on, unrecoverable flat spins. In FSX, the immediate signs of a stall are sharp yawing and pitching. You have to react very quickly, but if you break conditions precipitating the stall, you can recover.
I recommend trying the FSX and IL-2 demos before you consider wasting money on this one.
Why did I wait? April 12, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have seen this game out for awhile now. I really dont know why I waited. Well I bought the CH Fighter stick, and USB Throttle controller. This game runs great with them. The graphics in this game kick on anything I have. It runs great too. I also got the Forgotten Battles and Ace expansion pack. I total enjoy playing this game. Very realistic, and sounds great. It now my favorite flight sims, next to Microsoft 2004. Combat or noncombat I am flying. My only regret is why did I wait. UBI Soft did it right on this game. I have other product from UBI Soft but this game is #1. I wont wait so long next time. If you are in to Flight Sims like me dont pass this one up.
Awesome Game April 21, 2004 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
Damn, this game is incredible. Even if you rev your engine, the plane will rotate a bit from the torque. Try to learn how to recover from stalls on all the different models, then learn to recover the ME-109. It ain't easy but once you recognize how your plane of choice acts when it's about to stall, you can pull aerial maneuvers that really ride the edge of the aircraft's ability. I guess that's where 'flying by the seat of your pants' comes from. This game is just overall unbelievable. It's hard to imagine how people used to actually fly and fight in these things considering the difficulty of just getting up and landing, nevermind combat.
