5 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance......   January 25, 2006

Sadly, I was one of the few who bought Mortal Kombat Advance when it first came out based on the fact that I was a big fan of the series and craved a Mortal Kombat game to play on the go. Considering as to how the Gameboy Advance is geared more towards to 2-D style gameplay; I figured, at the time, that Mortal Kombat Advance would be a killer game to play on the system. Instead, it was downright mess. It was unresponsive and played nothing like the console game it was based upon(Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, which is the MK game that got me hooked). So, when Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance came out, I was extremely hesitant to even try the game. Even with reading reviews on it, I still felt it wouldn't be any good and put off buying it. I felt that, since all the other handheld versions of MK that came out weren't too good, this game wouldn't be to good.

Well, recently, I purchased Tekken Advance and was blown away at the fact that Namco was able to bring the game to Gameboy Advance and it actually play just like the console version. So, I asked one of the employees at the place where I purchase my videogames at if there were any games like Tekken that played with a more 3-D feel to it and he suggested Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. Again, I bulked. "I don't know..." I told him, "I've been duped too many times to be taken again on buying a Mortal Kombat game. I don't want to waste my money." So, to sell me on the game, he let me try it out for a few minutes on my system. I'm glad he did because it's the absolute best Mortal Kombat game I've ever played on a handheld. Screenshots really don't do the game justice...you have to see it in motion.

The game has 12 playable characters, and plays almost exactly like the console versions. It has plenty to unlock..additional costumes, arenas, and whatnot. The game has survival and two-player link modes like in most other fighting games, as well as night vision and psychedelic modes.

I'm glad we've finally got a Mortal Kombat game worth playing on a handheld. It's fun, addictive, and finally gives me faith that a good Mortal Kombat game can be played on a handheld. So much so, that I'm looking forward to playing Mortal Kombat Deception Unchained on the Playstation Portable once it comes out. If only we could sweet talk Midway into making a proper Mortal Kombat Trilogy or Mortal Kombat Gold for the handhelds, those were my two most favorite games.

5 out of 5 stars The best fighting game I've ever played so far!   September 7, 2005
What can I say. This game is PERFECT! The graphics are slick and wondrously cool looking, the fighters have all sorts of cool moves and bad-@$$ weapons, every bit of storyline is etched with gigantic excellency, and the sound and music are cool to the core! I love this game and it is so far the best game I have ever played in all terms of beat 'em up games. Here's how I rate the 12 fighters:

1. Scorpion-My favorite Mortal Kombat fighter of all time. Cool moves, cool costume, cool storyline, cool everything. He is # 1!

2. Sub-Zero-The second best loved by me. His freezing powers and ice sword are to be reckoned with, and so are his battle skills!

3. Kitana-My favorite female. She is a hot babe and has lots of moves that make her an @$$ kicker. Nice steel fans, too!

4. Sonya-One of my favorites. She's nearly as hot as Kitana, and also is very fast and ferocious. Her kiss of death rocks, also!

5. Frost-A cool(both ways)character. She has all of Sub-Zero's powers and more speed, plus good looks and two ice daggers. Yow!

6. Shang Tsung-Even better a villain here than in the MK movie. He has a cool getup and even cooler ways of duking it all out!

7. Kano-Another great villain and the best mechanical fighter ever. His laser eye, huge strength, and butterfly knives rule!

8. Quan Chi-The final boss in this game, and what a boss he is. He's powerful, shoots gas skulls, and wields two nasty swords.

9. Jax-The second best mechanical fighter. He is big and strong, and also very fast for one his size. His gun really rocks, too!

10. Kung Lao-He's one of the coolest there is. He can throw his hat at high speed, and has all sorts of moves and a huge sword!

11. Li Mei-She is both beautiful and skilled, and carries a pair of sais along with her. You'll like her combos-very damaging!

12. Kenshi-Don't get me wrong, I think this guy is pretty good. But since there's no one I like less in the game, he's lowest.

This is a fabulous game, and I've waited for years to have it! I now finally do, and I am proud of it. Oh, and about the rating up there? There are fighters I like more and/or less than some(not the first two, though)but it's only those 12. Whatever, this is a game that is well worth your hard earned money, and it even has a Krypt where you can collect cool prizes and a lot of other stuff along with that! I totally recommend this game to anyone who digs Mortal Kombat or any sort of fighting or anything else stellar!!!

4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly responsive, accessible fighting game.   October 16, 2003

I was never a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series. Though I loved the characters and concept, the controls usually left much to be desired. But I found this game to be immediately appealing, and supplied the learning curve necessary for me to re-enter the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Many Gameboy Advance games I've played just don't allow you to slowly build up skill. The Revenge of Shinobi, for example, had me seething thanks to the lack of checkpoints, overlong levels and overly powerful enemies. And there was no Difficulty setting available for new players to gently ease into expertise. This game does, happily, and being a newbie to the game I needed this feature in order to slowly learn the moves and master the mechanics.

I wasn't optimistic about the prospect of fighting games on the four-buttom Gameboy Advance, but the Mortal Kombat series proves to be highly suitable for the platform. And the response is quite good; I was actually able to execute a lot more moves here than on my old SNES Mortal Kombat game. There is also a load of extras to unlock using "Koins" that you earn by playing various modes of the game.

If I have one gripe, it's that there aren't too many characters to choose from. Twelve is on the low side for a fighting game in 2003. A minor complaint, however, for what is generally a very good, playable package.

4 out of 5 stars Such a nice change from MK-A   May 15, 2003

I loved Mortal Kombat on Arcade and Super Nintendo, I hated Mortal Kombat Advance, and I love Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance on GBA.

This opus renewed my faith in the series. The difficulty is well adjusted, the graphics and sound are just as good as I would expect them to be on GBA, and the gameplay is great. This is such a welcome change after MK-A (which was so difficult that it was downright frustrating).

Don't let your past experience with MK-A deter you from buying this great game. Think of MK-D.A. as a redemption game from Midway.

4 out of 5 stars It's a hell of a lot better than MK Advance   March 17, 2003
Over the yrs, handheld ports of MK games have ranged from absolutely abysmal to merely embarrassing(AHEM...MK Advance), so DA deserves special mention for even displaying a level of competence. The sound is great with good vioce samples and surprisingly potent smacking sounds, and the tight conrols retain an impressive amount of 12 characters maoves, stances, and fatalities. And just like it's console bretheren, there's tons of stuff to unlock, even if it's mostly character palete swaps. The most unfortunate thing about GBA DA is the decision to ape the console version's 3D gameplay when it really wasn't neccessary, the arenas are blocky Mode-7 messes that do impossible Escher things whenever the floor meets the background, and the characters have been pixelated to make the "scale". 10 for ambition, at any rate, great game Capcom, keep up the good work.
