2 out of 5 stars Very Over-Rated   October 22, 2008

While surfing amazon I came across Kuon and took a look at the overwhelmingly praising reviews. It sounded interesting, I've always enjoyed games and stories based on cultural mythos (this one being based on the rivalry between Abe no Seimei and Ashiya Doman) and I proceeded to buy it. I played this game all the way through exactly as a horror game should be, alone at home late at night, lights out.

A pretty decent intro did indeed raise the hair on my neck, but the rest of the game failed to deliver even that basic element of horror. The combat was particulary annoying, lame ghosts and "demons" who look and sound more like Gollum jump around and "attack" you (it seems more like they're trying to perform coitus with your leg), you can only perform lame stabbing moves and use lame spells that toss particularly lame fireballs. The first battle gave me a jump (not a thrill), after that every time I saw an enemy or heard them pounding on the door (as they often do) I dreaded the inevitable encounter, and not because of any scare tactic, but for the lame combat that would ensue.

The game does have a positive note, however. The level design and atmosphere are absolutely superb. From the putrid carnage (and there are some wonderfully gory scenes) you'll encounter, to the eerie gardens and hallways, the quality and depth of the setting is definitely better than the average game, and horror-movie. The actual quality of the gameplay, story, plotline, and tedious back-tracking and linearity (especially in the different phases where you end up doing the same things over again), prevent it from being worthwhile and before you're even finished with the 1st phase (of 3) the level designs, worthy of a much better game, become lost in absolute boredom.

Bottom line: Do not waste your money on this game (even though, after playing it, I am trying to sell it), perhaps if you're a die-hard horror-fan and see it at your local game store for around $5 ,but no more than $5, you might enjoy this particularly cheap farce.

5 out of 5 stars Rivals all Survival/Horror I've played   March 29, 2008
I never would've heard of this game if not for Amazon's suggestions, and was dumbfounded when I got it, played it, and realized I'd never heard nor read about this game before. It's at the top of my list of Survival/Horror games and I cannot recommend it enough. I played it several times through upon initially receiving it and I await to play it again. The graphics are some of the best I've seen on PS2. They put a lot of time into the graphics and storyline. They do seem to borrow quite a bit from the Fatal Frame series as far as the settings (villages) and storyline goes, but I'm not complaining- FF are some others of my most admired games. There are a few minor issues with controls in battle with demons where you just can't seem to aim correctly or use the magic effectively, but it's a small issue, and you get used to the kinks. It's a lot bloodier and gruesome than most Survival/Horror games, lots of blood, hanging body parts, etc.- which didn't bother me. The puzzles are hard at times or the planetary alignments or what to do next, but that sort of adventure adds to the battle aspect- which is not constant and can spare you some time to explore. I cannot remmend this game enough, and wish I could find others like it.

2 out of 5 stars Visually beautiful, but boring to play   October 8, 2007

I really don't know how this game could have gotten such high ratings from customers. I hated this game. While the graphics/visuals, and horror scenes were delightfully exotic and spooky, the method of game play was repetitive, boring, and uninteresting!

5 out of 5 stars A real tresure   February 2, 2007

In the days when we are all thinking about the fact that everything will be PS3 soon, it's good to know that there are still some largely unrecognized PS2 titles that are seriously worthwhile. Are there some minor problems? Sure. But, hey, if you're a fan of Silent Hill-type games, please give this a try. If you're an old-timer like me, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed.
O.K. Perhaps the characters mouths don't move in the movies. I didn't find this a terrible problem. But, more to the point, I found it to be quite a different concept and a very, very pretty and lyrical game with reasonably fluid character movements. In fact, though I have heard the game criticized on the basis of character movement, it is really the use of widely varied and cool spells that makes the game most fun. (And I didn't really think the character movement was that bad at all.)
My summary: If you're the type of person that really gets into the mood of a game and loved Silent Hill II, I think you'll love this. (And it's fairly intricate and long, if you want a lot of bang for your buck.)
