Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth it just for the soundtrack, but won't run on modern PCs.   August 12, 2008
This is essentially a PC port of Wipeout XL, the North American version of Wipeout 2097. There are two important things to know about this version. 1) It will run double speed on modern computers, and 2) it has a different soundtrack that is actually quite good.

This game calculates its timing from the vertical refresh of your monitor. What does this mean? This means the game runs at double speed, which is a real problem in a racing game! I have no official confirmation of this (what tech support?), but over many years, several versions of Windows, and several PCs, I've concluded that it derives its timing from the vertical refresh of the monitor. If your monitor can not be set to a TV refresh, 30 Hz, then you are in trouble. Since almost no modern video cards / monitor combinations support this, they will stay at 60 Hz; the game will run at double speed. I have not found a way to get it to work in years, and eventually just bought a PS2 copy.

Second, the soundtrack is completely different from what you get on the PS2 version in either the US or UK editions, and I love it! If something happened to my copy, I'd want a replacement just for the audio. However, there's a good chance you want to actually play the game, so you might want to check out the PS2 version.

A great game, but it may be impossible to make it run on a modern PC.
