Dismal November 29, 2008 I was very excited for this game when it came out four years ago. Four years have passed, I've installed it in every computer I've owned or had at work. I installed it on a friend's computer which was very powerful. It never worked. I could play the first level and the game froze EVERY time, and on every computer. I went to Eidos' website and searched online for patches and advice. Apparently I wasn't the only one who could not get this thing running. Eidos was very flippant about the problem and never issued a patch or a coherent set of instructions. The message boards gave at least three reasons for these problems and various means to fix them. Most involved messing around in the computer's memory and startup configurations.
Maybe it's a great game and fun to play. I wouldn't know. The graphics were a bit dated. The lighting and grainy feel of old news footage was cool. The characters and story were BS (is he a Marine or Army?). But I'd like the chance to really figure it out.
Perhaps it is a simple, old fashioned way of thinking - from way back in the days of IBM 386's - but I think that a game should work when installed into a computer that meets or exceeds the game's basic requirements. And if it is buggy, crashes or freezes on many platforms and the software company knows about this, then said company owes its customers a patch. Backdating one's drivers several years or upgrading all your components to top of the line gaming specs is not an answer.

when i first bought this game i was a little disappaointed in the fact that it did not hav a multiplayer game type and also that there was absence of a tutorial but i mean the graphics are great amazingly realistic explosions realistic blood and overall good missions THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THIS GAME IS ..... THE WORST ENDING MISSION EVER!!!!! all you do is defend the lz and hospital of your camp while under attack escort the nurses to the chopper and hold off the vc and nva and then take cover as an airstrike flattens the camp in the ending cutscene u see ppl searching for survivors and only u and monty (a south vietnamese fighter) survive weakest ending ever. still how can u not rate this at least a 4??? great game bad ending

Excellent Shooter February 18, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Excellent shooter - but need to be able to lighten screen more - some shots extremely difficult to see even with the gamma turned all the way up
Avoid it April 17, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are few games which had such shocking effect on me as this game. This might be a bad pune on the title, but this game is actually a bad joke on the shooter genre. It's only positive effect is that it makes other shooters appear better. I can find only three good things about it. The box looks great, the main menu is stylish and the music reinforces the mood. For all other things there is only laughter. You might wonder what the game is about, for instance. Was there a story to go with the game? Maybe there was and maybe there wasn't and it remains a mystery. It has probably something to do with a tour of duty in Nam. 'Who needs a story anyway?', they must have thought, 'Heck it's a shooter. Just give them something challenging to shoot at.' But unfortenately the lack of story has it's equal in the lack of a challenging smart AI. Smart AI? There is more intelligence in a watch. The enemy consists of simpleminded stereoptyped vietnamese fighters, who constantly shout the same lines in the same broken english and who's only tactics is based on a random choice between jumping up and down or running at you. To offset these mindless tactics the game throws swarms of them at you, being spawned continously. So more bad talking repetitive stereoptyped AI is the danger you face. There is only one way to make this pain go away and that is to advance quickly and finish the level as soon as possible. Or just stop playing altogether. To add to the fun, the graphics date from an earlier age. With bad textures, ugly done soldiers and awfull looking environments the game looks to stem from the time a 4 MB graphics card was the hottest thing around. Was this an effort to give it a retro look? If so, they succeeded in their failure. A last joke is the hype around the level of violence in this game. I wouldn't worry about that! People either stop playing after a few minutes because it's so bad or they turn into mindless or reptitive zombies before becoming violent. This game offers a great argument to introduce a quality rating next to a maturity rating. Not that it's actually needed in our free market, because it will fade away into the void where it belongs to stay there for always and always. The only goal the game really offers is to stop the awful drones from appearing. If that keeps you going, by all means buy it. If not: avoid it.
