GRAW 2 Review - Overall pretty good October 6, 2008 This is an enjoyable semi-realistic shooter, and the true strength of the game lies in multiplayer.
I finished the single player campaign, but the last mission took over 50 tries. I dislike practically impossible missions. The others were very good on single player though, especially the night stealth mission. There are many different weapons to choose from and they each behave differently. The overhead satellite map with real-time showing of movement is very handy in planning out the next phase of the mission. Team members are fairly competent, although they show an alarming tendency to get hung up on moving against something to the point that you give them several move orders instead of just one.
On multiplayer, you have a choice between multiplayer maps where you choose a class (Rifleman, demolitions, etc.) that come with a prepackaged assortment of weapons. I would rather have seen the ability to choose exactly what loadout you wanted here. If you play multiplayer campaign, you do get to choose what to carry with you. Some missions give you an armored "Mule" that carries weapons so you can reload or change what you are carrying. This would have been handy in the last mission, where I purposely got the sniper on my team killed so I could pick up his sniper rifle when mine ran out of ammunition.
The graphics are nice (although a bit drab, but it is supposed to be a war-torn area in Mexico)and the animations look real. There are a few gliches every once in a while, like players crashing out of the game (it happened 3 times in two full days of playing over a weekend)or shot enemies that are still standing but arching their back. You can push the dead standing guys around but I don't know if you can use them as a shield.
The sound is good, and I crank the volume so I can hear enemies approaching. There are little background noises like dogs barking and planes flying overhead that I though were a nice touch at immersion.
Overall, a 4 out of 5 game single player, edging towards a 5 multiplayer. Now that it has come down in price, it is definitely worth it. If you can't finish the last mission, do it multiplayer and have respawns turned on so you can at least see the end of the game.
Passable infantry simulator, not modern warfare September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was a big fan of the Ghost Recon games many years ago. This game is at best a slight evolution, really several years behind the curve. The graphics are decent, with bushes and leaves to try to conceal onself in. But there are no open fields or large hills and long distances or other nice terrain features that GR1 had. The maps here are ok, but there could be more.
The single player mission is passable; but the AI has near perfect aim. Not at all like what terrorists in Mexico would likely have in a real battle with US SF troops.
In multiplayer mode, most servers prohibit grenade launchers, which makes sense; but the soldier is only allowed one grenade. Worse, there is nothing else really in terms of tools or arms except the rifle, a worthless backup gun (except if you are a sniper you need your handgun sometimes), and a smoke grenade. There is otherwise nothing modern about this game - in fact it is more like WW1 with automatic rifles. No mines, sensors, overhead intelligence, communication.... you can type messages, but no automatic messages like in BF (by pressing the function keys, to say need reinforcement, enemy sighted, etc.). No indirect fire either. There is voice communication - if you pay (as far as I could figure out).
This is a fun game, in part because it is a much more deliberate and paced than the BF games and other FPS. Only a few bullets kill, and there is no health to get. But other than some nicer graphics and a few effects, like cars blowing up if hit by grenades, there really is nothing new about this game compared to GR1 from 1999 or whatever.
It's worth five or ten dollars, but not much more.
GRAW 2 Review August 31, 2008 Great decent game. Good graphics. Good weapon selection. Very realistic combat (you and enemies die in 1-4 shots). Slow load times, crashes occasionally, and seems to be somewhat buggy (on a dual core pentium with 4 GB RAM and NVidia FX9600 on Vista).
I enjoyed multiplayer August 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Single play mode is average. Instead of that, I enjoyed multiplayer. Actually, advanced warfighter is not so'advanced'.
Good but June 25, 2008 I liked GRAW but it still has one problem in single player, Enemies appear out of thin air!
Bad guys who man fixed emplacements, or come rushing out of places only appear when you've reached close enough to see them.
Which kind of negates the power of a Sniper Rifle in spotting targets and sweeping areas. After scanning a building and windows and ledges for enemies I progress only to find a sniper or some other bad guy who suddenly appears because now my team is close enough and they get cut to ribbons. What is the point in having a .50 BMG rifle if badguys beyond the range of the computer limits as your sight to badguys but not beyond the range of your rifle?
And ofcourse GRAW doesn't put badguys in the same place each time to "keep it real." I wouldn't mind this except for the aforementioned problem. I've reached all the way to the last stand mission and this glitch is bugging the hell out of me. So ARMA is still tops in my opinion because it doesn't have this problem all the bad guys are preloaded and don't have to appear out of thin air.
