Two Films in One Game November 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This addition to the 007 game series is a worthy one. It is played in a movie point of view from the get-go, taking off from the end of "Casino Royale" and following the "Quantum of Solace" script almost word-for-word. What I really like about it is even though it is played as if it were the two movies, it tells stories from other points of view than Bond's, such as Mi6 and the villians. They also placed the majority of the "Casino Royale" missions in as flashbacks, which makes a really neat double storyline. As far as the main game is concerned, it is a great buy and even though it is quick to beat, you won't have any hesitations about going back and playing it again at a higher difficulty.
There are a lot of limitations though, and many of the perks and gadgets from the EA series of 007 are gone. Activision took over the series well, but they left out some stuff Bond fans will want. The animation, while extremely realistic, is somewhat lacking in the graphic violence. I never saw any blood of any kind when taking out enemies, and some of the scenes in the actual films were infinitely better with blood than the game's take on it without. The weapons are extremely detailed, but low in quantity. I only used about ten weapons throughout the entire single player game. Also, there are no vehicle missions of any kind - so no you can't drive the beautiful Aston Martin. That was a big disappointment for me. Much of the single player game is in what I call "movie mode," which is when it shows Bond in third person walking on ledges and avoiding enemies. The action during these moments is very limited, and it only asks you to press an occasional button to do anything at all. While it is neat to watch, you feel limited playing Bond and will feel like you should be doing more. Luckily the majority of the game is in first person, so that's not a huge bother.
Being Activision, you'll find the multiplayer to be almost an exact replica of "Call of Duty 4," but without a lot of the extra goodies. It is by far the best multiplayer on a Bond game, though, but don't expect everyone to be Bond in a free-for-all because it won't allow it. Overall it's a great game and worth your money, and I'm glad I bought it.
Bond is back, for better or worse November 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's been a while since we had a James Bond game (and a good one at that), and Quantum of Solace seems promising enough. I mean hey, when you're using the Call of Duty 4 engine in a game starring the legendary secret agent, the bar gets set pretty high, and thankfully, Quantum of Solace manages to mostly deliver the goods. Mostly. Playing as Bond, the game's story puts together story elements of Casino Royale and the new film, as you take the baddies in this slick looking FPS. And considering that the game is running on the aforementioned Call of Duty 4 engine, the game looks as slick as you'd expect. Characters and environments are wonderfully rendered, but underneath all the gloss, there isn't really too much to admire here. Gunplay is decent at best, while the action itself is nicely stylized, except for some cartoony looking explosions. However, it isn't long before you see what all the game has to offer, and it isn't long before things start to get repetitive either. Whether it's missions, to the generic villain looks and animations, the game just doesn't offer much variety. Also, Quantum of Solace's single-player mode is pretty short; you could finish it in a day. However, the game does offer some solid multiplayer action that will hold your interest, at least for a while. Bond star Daniel Craig also provides his voice, and does great work. All in all, Quantum of Solace is entertaining for a while, and a worthwhile trip for Bond fans, but if you're just looking for a worthwhile FPS, Quantum of Solace won't quite quench your thirst.
wished more powerful action November 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
007 means unbelievable action, right? 007 console game traditions always meet with a number of beautiful gadgets or various powerful vechile chase sequence( Powerful Missle-launching). However, this title is composed only of somewhat boring shooter experience. Its game play is good. but feels somethings missing, where is 007 move in other 007 game? Overall good game definitely, but I guess, kind of haste release.
Call of Solace November 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When i first heard the new James Bond game release was going to be built around the Call of Duty 4 engine, i've been waiting eagerly to get my hands on it.
Offline, it's an amazing game. This game jumps back and forth between the events of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The levels are very detailed. The enviroments are more destructible than Call of Duty 4, which definately adds to the full Bond expirence. Some levels have diverted dramatically from the movie. Such as La Chiffre's abduction by Obono includes the hotel being secured by his militia. I understand that between the two movies, they needed to expand for a better game expirence. Levels that were closer to the movie scenes were amazing. The sinking apartment in Venice couldn't have been pulled off any better, in my opinion. The game incorporates a third person view for around the corner shooting like in the Rainbow Six franchise. Another added feature that definately improves the gameplay. One feature i did not care for was the QTE events. Buttons flash on the screen, you must quickly respond or risk losing a hand to hand fight. Most QTE is done while in close quarters, and is up to the player how little or how much it's utilized. The boss sequences require the QTE system, but seems more entertaining than previous bond games with the generic helicopter or dual rocket launcher wielding soldier.
Sadly, one hindering factor in my opinion is the multiplayer. Not nearly as crisp as Call of Duty 4. You earn cash per round to purchase your choice of weapons, upgrades, and special abilities. I like the freedom of choosing what to get next, rather than suffering through several firearms and perks you could care less to ever use. Various modes seem like they were borrowed from the Metal Gear Online series, along with the classic free for all and team death match. Over all, characters look and feel clunky. The learning curve is harsh because of the buy-what-you-want system for more expirenced and aggressive players. Overall, i think the multiplayer was not polished over to make the release date.
PROS: -CoD4 Graphics engine -Great offline level designs -Levels chalk full of enemies to compete with a Bond movie body count -Added over the shoulder cam to fire around corners and blind fire is definately what CoD4 was lacking. -Most levels are very fast paced, adding to the Bond expirence
CONS: -Online Multi-player is definately lacking -The "hacking" sequence of unlocking doors gets rather old very fast -The gun selection seemed fairly small compared to previous Bond games -No real special bonuses after completion of the game such as unlocked guns -The final stage's high difficulty is ridiculously unbalanced from the rest of the game. -Fairly short. Game was beaten on medium difficulty within two (long) sessions.
Overall, i highly recommend this game offline. Honestly, a lot about this game reminds me of the original Goldeneye 64. The levels are extensive with tons of villians between you and the objective. The physics, destructible enviromets, and overall gameplay layout make you want to replay levels over and over again. EA could've spent more time on certain aspects, but compared to other movie based games rushed to coeincide with the theatrical release, this definately could have been much worse. DO NOT buy this game if you're looking for solid online multiplayer, very long first time through gameplay (such as RE4), or can't play a game again once you've beaten it. If you can enjoy a well made FPS, playing the levels again and again you won't be disapointed.
Quantum of Solace Impressions November 18, 2008 Overall this is a fun game. It is your basic linear shooter with scene after scene of killing bad guys (with some stealth mixed in). There is nothing revolutionary about it. It has some quick-time events, though thankfully not many, unless you take-down every enemy (clicking the right analog stick when right next to them). The game also utilizes a cover system (third person, i.e. GoW) that allows you to easily kill enemies (but sometimes the AI is smart and will try to flank you).
It took me around 5-6 hours to beat this game. It is a pretty short game. I played on the normal difficulty (or 2 out of 4) and found it to be extremely easy. Looking for more of a challenge I then played and beat the game on the hardest difficulty. That took a little longer, but only because enemies instantly kill you if you don't utilize the cover system.
The graphics are on par with most games today and look good because of the COD4 engine.
I have played some multiplayer online, and it is pretty fun. Instead of leveling up like COD4, you earn credits for purchasing upgrades (new weapons, grenades, sidearms, extra ammo, etc.). There are several game modes including basic deathmatch, bond evasion, teamwork, and golden gun.
If you are interested in the game I would recommend renting it, or buying it when it drops in price. I'm a big Bond fan, so I really like it, but I'm guessing not all will feel the same way. Also, so far all of the trophies/achievements are very easy to obtain. The ones that will take the most time all relate to multiplayer. It's hard to compare this to Goldeneye. Graphics-wise, it is obviously better. Other than that, I don't think it is any better. It's pretty hard to beat Goldeneye.
