Amazon.com A new kind of weapon for a new kind of hero.Dark Sector is a third-person Action/Shooter that thrusts players into a sci-fi flavored nightmare scenario set in the post Cold War era. Playing in the role of Hayden Tenno, an unscrupulous covert operative sent on an assassination mission into Lasria - a fictional Eastern European city on the brink of ruin and rumored to be contaminated by a mysterious and frightening plague, Hayden takes out his mark, but before he can escape is attacked by an unknown enemy. Not killed outright as expected, he is instead infected with the virus that is causing the plague.

View larger. | The Technocyte Virus and Hayden's Evolution Just as with the other victims swarming the street of Lasria, the Technocyte Virus imbues Hayden with powerful, inhuman abilities. These abilities are not static and as they progress they cause severe, accelerated pain; pain that eventually drives their hosts insane, turning them quite literally into monsters of superhuman power. Hayden possesses an unexpected resistance to this maddening pain, but his body is not spared the mutations caused by the virus. The first of these are metal armor that grows from his body and a three bladed, throwable weapon called a "glaive" which explodes from his right arm and can regenerate if lost. But these are only the beginning. Eventually players may also gain the power of limited invisibility, the use of a bulletproof shield and an assortment of deadly melee attacks. As Hayden slashes his way through the mutants overrunning Lasria he stumbles upon a plot by a rogue operative and his private army of henchmen to harness the power of the strongest of these mutants for some dark purpose. No longer entirely human, but not a mindless mutant Hayden must make a decision whether to use his own new powers to stop this plot or look the other way. But regardless of his choice, he has become the target of both the blind rage of his fellow mutants and a shadowy paramilitary group that seeks to control them.Weapons: Glaive, Guns and the Black Market Dark Sector is far from the traditional third-person shooter. The glaive is the game's signature weapon and as players gain experience they will come to see that it is not only a stylish weapon, but also much more versatile than the traditional firepower available in-game. It is of course deadly as a slashing weapon and can be thrown great distances, but as Hayden's powers evolve the glaive can be used in unexpected ways, ranging from siphoning and focusing elemental features like fire and freezing cold on enemies, to opening doors and retrieving items from inaccessible areas. But this doesn't mean that players can shun the conventional weapons scattered throughout the game, quite the opposite. To be successful players must successfully journey underground to the game's `black market' where they can purchase new weapons with scavenged rubles and also upgrade their existing weapons. Some of these upgrades include increasing a weapon's firing rate, larger ammo clips, the ability to fire two simultaneous rounds and a `puncture ability' that allows you to shoot through any enemy to hit another standing behind him. Finding the entrances to the black market are important because firearms in the game are biologically sensitive to mutant powers and unless altered to ignore the existence of altered DNA are useless to the mutated Hayden.Gameplay Modes and Features Not only does Dark Sector contains a deep singleplayer story mode, but in addition it features multiplayer functionality allowing players to harness Hayden Tenno's mutant powers in two different ways, both in awesome 10-person online multiplayer combat. The two modes include:Infection Mode: Think of this as `tackle the guy with the glaive.' In this timed mode one player assumes the role of a fully-powered Hayden Tenno, complete with shield, invisibility and melee capabilities, while the other nine play as human operatives trying to kill him and take his place. The player in the role of Hayden receives a single point for each kill made, while the soldier that takes him down gets 2, plus the right to wield the glaive in the next go around. Players making assists in the slaying of Hayden receive one point as well. The player with the most points at the end of the round wins.Epidemic Mode: In this team-based mode, with a set number of rounds per match, two teams, each made up of one Hayden and a group of soldiers, battle to kill the other team's Hayden. A single point is awarded to each team per kill of the opposing Hayden. Each Hayden begins at full strength and the team with the most points at the end of the round wins.Other features available in both multiplayer modes include voice chat and global leaderboards. The Birth of a Superhero Whether in singleplayer or multiplayer modes the developers of Dark Sector have endeavored to link every action of the player to the mutant evolution of Hayden Tenno. This means that as players progress through the game defeating bosses as well standard enemies they increase Hayden's mutant abilities and advance his disease. It's a catch-22 that with every victory Hayden becomes less human, but one that the game's storyline relishes as the one-time hitman slowly and unsurely morphs into a hero.

darkSector from a casual gamer's perspective November 25, 2008 I consider myself a casual gamer. I usually take from 1 to 3 weeks to finish a game depending on my workload at the time. If you want a review from a hardcore gamer, you should move on.
I actually first read the plot on wikipedia, intending to skip this game. But then I saw it on sale for $15. I'm glad that I grabbed it at that price. Even though I think at $19.99, it's still worth it.
What I like: Controls - Smooth and the maneuvers can be be learned easily Short load times - Transistion between sections are smooth, just like the controls. Plot - Maybe it's because I read the plot in advance, but plot is actually pretty interesting... I hear that they're going to follow up with a sequal... May not be true. Gameplay - You shoot things and you solve mini-puzzles. The main character is interesting enough. I don't mind the 3rd person view. Graphics - WOW! Great graphics. Especially fire! Fun Factor - You can kill enemies multiple ways and you may find that one method is more gratifying than the other. Challenging, but not too hard - Since I'm a casual gamer, the difficulty level was just right.
Negative thoughts about this game: Difficulty level can't be changed if you wanted to play in a 'hard' mode It's kind of short. In 4 days, I'm 70% Finished. Just getting started on my 8th chapter.
Overall, I've been enjoying this game and I think that it's well worth the money. I would even go as far as saying that this game is underrated!
Very Good!! October 21, 2008 The gameplay is awesome, the story may be weak, but you will have a great time playing it, thats for sure. give it a try
Completely underrated, worth buying October 6, 2008 The game is really good for 20 bucks, it's like Gears meets RE4. The only downside is that there seems to be no other difficulty levels but the defualt one which seems to be set to medium. I like a game to be challenging and this is not the case with this game, but it certainly has that fun factor. I'm currently on chapter 5 and the claive seems to be getting stronger as I go on, which in turn is making me unstoppable. Just to let you know I tried playing online and it seems no one plays anymore. A definite buy for $20 or less.
Enjoyable 3rd Person Shooter October 4, 2008 In this shooter your guns are just not enough. You need to master the glaive or you will run out of ammo very quickly. As you progress through the story you unlock different skills for your glaive.
I have played through this game twice (once on the hardest setting Brutal) and unlocked all the awards for single player. I actually really enjoyed playing this game. I did however wait until the price drop. At $20 you will be very happy with the game. Paying full price you may have been disappointed.
To really appreciate this game you will have to play it on Brutal. On the normal setting the AI of the enemies isn't the greatest and you can almost just go charging into situations and come out victorious. Once you go to Brutal, you will need to plan your strategy because the AI adapts to the surroundings better and the creatures charge you much more violently.
I did not play around with the multiplayer aspects of this game so I will not review that portion.
Overall I did enjoy this game and like I said before, paying $20 makes this title a great addition to your PS3 collection.
Cant beat this for the price you pay September 27, 2008 This is a review coming from a gamer who is coming off of a hiatus from gaming. I had originally planned on buying another PS3 title but as the title I wanted was sold out I figured for 20 bucks I would give Dark Sector a try.First off I want to state that the games storytelling leaves something to be desired. Much like Gears of War the story is very vague so if your looking for a deep emotional experience look to Metal Gear Solid 4 for your fix. For anyone who has played Gears of War and Resident Evil 4 you should feel right at home with this game. The camera Angle is always behind you which makes aiming a breeze.Shooting in this game is essential and its always fun to get into firefight when you use your guns and glaive. The real charm of the game comes in the form of what is called a Glaive. Essentially a oversized throwing star killing soliders and mutants alike never gets tiresome with the glaive, expecially once its abilities start increasing. Youll go from having a basic throwing weapon to a weapon that you can throw hard enough to cut soliders and mutants alike in half. Later on in the game you also gain other abilities such as maneuvering the glaive to precisely whereyou want it to go,and using elements such as fire, ice and electricity along with your glaive that can result in some pretty fantastic looking fight sequences on your screen. The puzzles that are througout the game will take basic use of your glaive and applying it to what you see on screen. The enmies can be quite smart in this game. Im on my second playtrough right now and have noticed the soldiers flanking hiding behind cover quite a bit. On a technical not the game looks great. With great lighting effects, and with some really fantastic textures Dark Sector will be sure to impress. There are some minor issues with textures looking muddy when your first enter a new area but other than that I was always pleased with what I saw.I did have some flaws with the game. Althought in the beginning of the game there are hints of what might be a really interesting story it seems that the developers thought you might be aware of all the characters backround information already so your can be left very puzzled after the games cinemas. There is also a feature throughout the game that is called The Underground. Essentially this isa place where buying guns, ammo, and applying upgrades to your weapons can be done for a price. While this sounds good the weapons can be very expensive and because of the lenght of the game your are not given adequate time to aquire all the weapons you can. I found myself purchasing only 2 weapons throughout the game, and thats all youll really need. While this game might not be on everyones "Must Have List" its certainly game that will put a smile on your face as long as you love over the top violence and for the cheap price its deffinitely worth picking up to hold you off untill games like Far Cry 2,Resistance 2, and Gears of War 2 get here.
