 Great product works wonderful January 9, 2009
I got this for my Mac and it works great. Works right out of the box, nothing to set up. Also transfer speeds are great super fast with Firewire 800. I have Apple's Time Machine and it only takes a second or two to back up after initial backup. The only thing is it is a little load when running, but that is expected with a 1TB external drive.

I am a professional photographer and need a lot of storage space for my photos. I currently have five of these connected to my iMac 24" via Firewire 800. My experience with them has been flawless -- they just work -- no drama, no issues. Highly recommended.
I really like the "smart" power button feature, that lets me shut down drives I don't use very often. So, for example, the drives containing previous year's photos are always wired to the computer, but shut down. On the rare occasions that I do need access to old files, I just power up the drive, get the info I need, and then shut it down again.

The MyBook Studio Edition drives come preformatted as Mac HFS+ Journalled. If you want to use this drive under Linux you will want to remove all the original partition data. Poking it with fdisk failed with a message about unknown geometry, and amusingly, dd'ing /dev/zero all over it did nothing either!
Apparently the device (dev/sdc) was not properly configured by the kernel... So I had to go to a friend with a Mac and ask him to remove all the partition info. Afterwards fdisk worked fine, and I am now happily using the drive.

This is one of the best purchases I have made for my home business. All of my files are saved to this drive. I'm able to take my files with me to my office or to work at home. If my computer crashes, which is a given with any computer, I don't lose my files in the crash.
Pros:
--Affordable compared to the cost of losing important files.
--Easy to setup and use
--1TB is a lot of space and will easily hold multimedia files as well as your documents
--Does not take up a lot of desk space
--Easy to take with me on the go
Don't forget to back up this drive as well. I've had other external drives crash on me but if you have additional back ups you'll still be saved. Look into purchasing the Western Digital carrying case if you will be taking the drive on the road alot. This case helps to keep it protected and makes it easier to carry the drive around.

Fantastic product at a great price! I love the automatic backup features that it provides and it is very fast(I'm using the firewire 800).
