Amazon.com Review
One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.

Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • One of the best and most complex stories in gaming
  • Outstanding graphics with many interactive elements
  • Excellent soundtrack and voice acting
Cons:
  • Long periods of watching instead of playing
  • Some extraneous dialogue
  • Solid Snake may inspire gamers to grow mullets

4 out of 5 stars Metal gear solid 2 sons of liberty review   September 1, 2008
I got this as a gift for my younger brother. He was so happy when it arrived because it completes his collection of MGS Games. This came in good condition and kept my brother occupied for 3 hours or so.

3 out of 5 stars Boring!   July 23, 2008
Way too many cutscenes and babble, not nearly enough game play. It's ultimately very boring.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!! GREATEST VIDEO GAME EVER!!!   February 21, 2008
This is a fantastic game! It takes a while to get used to (some aspects are a little strange at first), but you will grow to love everything about it. The plot, though incredibely complicated is amazingly crafted and will blow your mind. The gameplay is amazing-the controls are tricky at first, but once you master them you have more control than with most games. The graphics couldn't be better. Besides MGS3, I haven't seen better graphics for PS2.

The bosses you fight are great-from Vamp, an immortal vampire to Solidus, a clone of Snake bent on taking down the Patriots to Fatman, a crazy bomber.
Also, you use some awesome weapons which you can pick up along the way. Some examples are the M4, M9, AK-74u and socom.

For the first tiny section of the game, you play as Snake, the protagonist of MGS1. Then, as a twist, you play as Raiden, a young, somewhat androgynous soldier with a dark past for about 95% of it.

After playing this game once, I decided I prefered MGS3. But after playing a again, I've realized just how great MGS2 is. It's more than just a video game. It is a truly captivating story, with an incredible plot and engaging characters. It encompasses philisophical issues and conspiracy theories while remaining a very fun game to play.
By the end, you will have gone though an amazing journey and you'll feel completely satisfied with the story's ending.
I cannot reccomend this game enough. I don't know how to explain how fantastic this game is. Simply play it.

4 out of 5 stars certainly is...odd   February 19, 2008
This game is great. First thing first though, do not look up anything about the plot before playing this game, just be prepared for anything.

Graphics: 10/10 These are some of the best graphics i've seen on ps2. especially considering the game is from 2001.

Sound: I didn't really pay much attention to the sound in this game...

controls: 10/10 The controls are almost perfect. Theres a few things I had to adjust though.

Gameplay: 9/10 Actual gameplay is awesome. It's the bosses that aren't very good. The bosses either seem to be trying to imitate the first game (or should i say...third) or are just plain stupid.

plot: 7.7/10 This is where the game falls short a bit. The plot is good, but it's extremely unfocused, confusing, and rediculously out-there. Towards the end, stuff makes less and less sense, especially a certain part which i won't spoil, but it's after the really really long cutscene.

Bonus: Snake has one of the coolest mullets ive ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars Good entry to the series   February 5, 2008
MGS2 starts out rather straight forward and has the expectable 50 plot twists before its over. However this one takes it even further and some of the weird stuff that happens towards the end might be pretty confusing. (like having in game characters break the 4th wall by telling you to turn off the game console!!)

I love Raiden. He should totally star in more Metal Gear games. It is unfortunate that you only get that sword so late in the game but I think you can unlock it for the whole game later.

All in all very impressive.
