Amazon.com Review
Every so often, a game comes along that completely redefines a particular genre. In 1998, Half-Life ignited first-person shooters with its addicting blend of storytelling and action sequences. Homeworld, a polished, groundbreaking first-time effort from Relic Entertainment, attempts to change the way gamers play real-time strategy games. In the past, none of these 3-D games have accomplished the daunting task with the same gorgeous visuals and tactical game play as Homeworld.

Upon the discovery of an ancient galactic map inscribed with the words "our home," the people of Kharak began construction of a massive mother ship and fleet to traverse the galaxy and reach their long-rumored home world. Players construct, maintain, and control the Kharak fleet through 16 challenging single-player missions or against fellow humans on Sierra's WON.net online gaming service. During the solo campaign, you'll face literally hundreds of enemy vessels. All friendly and enemy ships, ranging from small, yet dangerously quick interceptors to the powerful, though expensive destroyers and heavy cruisers, are rendered with exquisite detail; further, expect plenty of impressive visual effects, from the glowing ship exhaust to fiery explosions. Adding to the pluses, Homeworld's thoughtful interface design eases the intense--and often complicated--resource gathering and combat situations. --Doug Radcliffe

It is a planet as old as our memory. But recent genetic research suggests that we are different from all other forms of life on Kharak. Then came the discovery: an ancient tablet long hidden in the Great Banded Desert, buried within the wreckage of a half-destroyed spacecraft. We must now acknowledge the inescapable truth - we are aliens to this world. This ancient rune set our civilization on a path leading straight into the heart of the galaxy. 5 out of 5 stars First of its kind and well worth the praise   June 13, 2007

This is a 3D RTS game and as such will require a lot of getting used to. I am a very spatial person so the interface was very intuitive, but for others, it might take a long time to understand and master or never at all. The story is original and gripping. The music is enchanting and after 8 years I still go back and listen to it. The races that you'll encounter are just incredible. It is like the Odyssey, so I guess you can say it is a Space Odyssey of sorts. There are just so many strategies and tactics you can use with the multitude of units at your selection. The only limitation is your creativity.

This is definetly a smart people's game. Don't go in to it thinking it's another mindless build and rush game. It will actually challenge you to think.

2 out of 5 stars Not hooked   April 24, 2007

If a game doesn't hook me within the first half-hour then I'm just not going to see it through to the end. Homeworld just seemed like Age of Empires: In Space to me and the slow, confusing gameplay really got on my nerves. I know that this game has an Army of fans who will denounce my comments, but I simply could not get into it.

Usually, I like space games and I was hoping that this would have a Star Trek-ish feel to it. I also quite the Wing Commander games and since it only cost me 99p then I thought I might as well give it a go. Call me shallow, but it didn't give me instant satisfaction and uninstalled it after only 45 minutes.

3 out of 5 stars eh, I've played better   February 10, 2007

I got this game over command and conquer because the reviews were off the chart. Unfortunately I was wrong, it's not as fun as I'd hoped. I realize this game is more than a few years old and I'm not a guy who needs good graphics to enjoy a game, but this game was just frustrating for me. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. I'll stick with 2D RTS games thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Gaming Experience   September 17, 2003

Homeworld was not easy to learn -- the startup tutorial helps you get the hang of controlling your units in true 3-D space -- but that's what sets the standard for a new class of games.

I bought Homeworld for $ at CompUSA, after it was already 2 years old. What luck! The game is engrossing. The graphics and sound are spectacular, and the game's pace is a mix of frantic battles and eerie, downright creepy exploration. There's plenty of familiar strategy to start with: build units, gather resources, and research new tech.

But it's the realistic way that you manage your ships in 3-D space, with rotation and scaling that are really intuitive once you get comfy with it, that makes this game a mindblower. I've played most, if not all, new games in the past 5 years, and this one is near the top of my value-per-hour-played list.

Get it, even if it's used.
