Product Description
In Resident Evil 4 you'll know a new type of horror, as the classic survival-horror action returns with all-new characters, controls and storylines. We last saw Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 2 - a rookie cop in Raccoon City, fighting to stay alive. That was six years ago. Since then, government forces have managed to control the zombie threat and Leon has become a Federal agent. When the President's daughter is kidnapped, Leon tracks her to a remote, hidden fortress in Europe - where he'll relive the horror he faced six years before. Players will face never-before-seen enemies that make Nemesis seem like a kitten. You'll be wishing for the usual Resident Evil zombies!

4 out of 5 stars Decent port made better with mods   July 28, 2008
The PC version of Resident Evil 4 is just about as good as the console versions. While there are mods that allow you to aim with the mouse, using a gamepad is much better. The only problem with using a gamepad is the game's deadzone (area the analog stick can move in without it affecting the game) is big and can't be changed, making precise aiming a bit harder.

With the patch and a few mods, it is the best-looking version of the game available. The low-res textures can be replaced with the ones from the Gamecube version of the game and have even more detail. Bloom and a fake HDR effect were modded into the game as well, making is look much better. Finally, those with game controllers can replace the in-game action buttons with buttons corresponding with their controllers.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as the other versions, very fun and intense. Overall, Resident Evil 4 for the PC is just about as good as the console versions, and is heavily improved with community-created mods.

4 out of 5 stars Who needs an Umbrella?   May 6, 2008

I don't know much about the mechanics of video games, but I know what I like, and I love Capcom's RESIDENT EVIL series. From the very first time I played a game in the series, I was hopelessly hooked on its combination of creepy, horror-movie atmosphere, brutal violence (shotgun vs. zombie = organic firecracker) and complex backstory. A lot of thought went into creating and expanding the RE-verse, and I never get tired of visiting.

Now, it must be said that RE 4 is not as much a sequel to the earlier games as the name implies, but rather a new storyline with some old characters. The Umbrella Corporation, which has been the staple villain of the series, is basically nowhere to be found here - the opening movie explains that following the destruction of good ol' Raccoon City by a nuke at the end of RE 3: NEMESIS, the Federal government put the kybosh on that gaggle of power-crazy mad scientists. In addiition, there are no zombies in this game, and the concept of "survival horror" has been kind-of abandoned, since the idea is not to "get out of town alive" but rather to carry out a specific secret-agent-type mission.

The storyline is this: Leon Kennedy, who you last saw (and played) in RE 2, is now no longer a bumbling rookie cop with a bad haircut, he's a bada*s secret U.S. agent with a somewhat improved haircut, looking for the missing daughter of the American President. His quest takes him to a remote village in Spain, where he is beset by homicidal townspeople who act like zombies, but aren't. He eventually discovers the whole town, as well as all the surrounding areas, are under the influence of a parasite similar to the T and G viruses from the earlier games, but which is controlled by a weird religious cult ensconced in a nearby castle. Natch, the cultists are the same doofs who kidnapped the President's ridiculously nubile daughter Ashley. Guns-a-blazin', Leon attempts to rescue the oft-kidnapped Ashley and get out of dodge, encountering on the way a whole parade of flesh-eating monsters, smug villains and not-too-terribly challenging puzzles.

RE 4 is loosely linked to the original storyline by virtue of certain characters, such as sultry `n treacherous Ada Wong, who may or may not be working with others to revive Umbrella (she has her own playable storyline which is unlocked when you beat the game), but on the whole it's its own thing, and not a bad one at that. On the plus side, the creepy atmosphere is very well-established, with a depressing color scheme, good SFX, and the usual spooky music. The weapons array is richly diverse and there are weapons merchants who can upgrade your arsenal throughout the game (money has been added, which brings a new dimension to the story, as you have to pay for your new toys). The parasite-infected townspeople are smarter and faster than zombies and some of them are armed; indeed, the array of bad guys and bosses is pretty impressive, including one SOB wearing a burlap mask and hefting a chain saw who just wouldn't die and scared me half to death before he cut my head off.

On the downside, the game itself is very, VERY long. I kept thinking I had come to the end when, in fact, I had just finished another in a seemingly endless list of chapters. Ashley gets kidnapped and re-kidnapped so many times it becomes a joke, and as always, the inability to save for long periods of time condems you to replay sections of the game much more than you would like. Most annoyingly, the game is not "truly PC" in that you cannot actually play it without the purchase of a dual axis, 12-button joystick to supplement the keyboard controls. This makes things needlessly awkward...not to mention expensive.

Having said all this, I truly enjoyed playing RE 4 and firmly believe it is a great game and a worthy addition to the franchise. Now excuse me while I blow a mumbling monk's head off with my high-powered rifle.

5 out of 5 stars Resident evil 4 on pc   April 18, 2008

Resident evil 4 on the pc is awesome!! I love it! But be forwarned in advance!! Don't depend on the keyboard to be very useful and effective if you want to have true re4 experience. I reccomend you buy the pc version of xbox360 controller. When i purchased it i was blown away! It works just like the nintendo gamecube version. Also pay attention to the recomended spec requirements so you will not experience any technical problems. I had to buy an advanced 3d graphic card for my pc and had to get a 512 megabyte ram card cause i needed it for the bare functions of the re4. It increased the framerate and performance of my computer and now i "enjoy"! So before buying the game look for more ram (if your computer is below memory) and look for a 3d graphics card if your computer is 1.8 megaherts or below.

3 out of 5 stars Zombie fun!   March 17, 2008
My conclusion first, then the details for those with patience. Do you own a playstation or gamecube? If yes, stay away. Your expectations will kill the game for you. Do you love zombies? If so then your the crowd I'm talkin to. When it comes to fighting the undead theres a lot of bang for your buck here. One word of warning, this can be a fun game but only if you happen to have a game controller, otherwise its impossible to enjoy. Expect the same ol save point drama too, so buyer beware.

Now for the details:

I played this back when it came out on my roomates gamecube and it was a lot of fun despite my hatred toward save point structured console games. The game was nearly endless, had plenty of bonuses and zombie goodness to keep my hands sore. Its been years later and I'm glad to play it on the PC with my xbox controller, not only is it a pretty true port its still a lot of endless fun. Of course it doesn't seem to look as good as before, but Donkey Kong today isn't as scary as it was back in the day either. But if I had a choice to stick with the PC version or have someone give me a free gamecube, I would still stick with the PC version.

They have added more, its got all the old bonus levels plus one more Ada set, two new weapons to earn as well. Its just as responsive on a xbox controller although yes, confusing when they ask for button mashing during movies, but hey that used to confuse me anyways on the gamecube.

So if a few grainy cut scenes don't ruin your day, you don't own the gamecube, you don't have allergic reactions to gamepads, and you want to see what the fuss was about back in the day, $20 rarely buys more fun than this.
