Product Description Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Award for his work on global warming and the possible ills the world could suffer. Award winning Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition also includes another action-packed EA game - Northern Strike. Battlefield 2142 - In 2006 a climatic catastrophe triggered a new ice age on earth. A hundred years later, everyone gave up on finding a solution to the problem and two superpowers were formed: Europe and on the other side the Pan Asian Coalition - causing an arms race. Now it's 2142 and the war for the few resources left has already been going on for a few years, with no end in sight. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech weaponry, including assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also take control of the most lethal vehicles known to man. Massive battle Walkers wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When taking on this futuristic armor players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new hi-tech countermeasures like EMP grenades and smart mines to level the playing field. Epic online gameplay for up to 64 players drops gamers on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their team-mates. In Northern Strike, it's a few years into the most desperate struggle in the history of mankind, and with the conflict focused around the Mediterranean, the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) seizes the chance to claim the undefended natural resources beneath the ice of mainland Europe. By the time the EU is aware of their presence, the enemy is firmly entrenched in the continent's harsh ice fields, among abandoned city ruins and soaring mountain peaks. Only fierce close-quarters infantry battles along claustrophobic city streets and narrow rocky passes will eject the PAC forces from their well-defended positions and push them back towards the sea. Great game but..... September 14, 2008 Battlefield is one of the great fps franchises, and bf2142 continues the tradition with a futuristic spin on the series. It takes place in 2142 where Earth has entered another ice age and the humans left on earth are struggling to survive. Two factions, the EU and PAC, fight for territory using the most advanced firearms and vehicles.
The gameplay is the same as bf2 but is a little different. Sort of like skill trees, each class has a tiers for unlocks. For example as recon, you can go towards being a sniper and unlock APM mines, 4x scope, kinetic stabilizer, and Zeller H advanced sniper rifle , or be more of a stealthy assualt with RDX, invisibility camo, and Lambert Carbine. Plus you get the usual badges, pins, medals, and dogtags (think of the predator and his "trophies"). The gameplay is satisfying and will keep you entertained for quite a while.
The graphics are more beefed up this time around with enhanced lighting effects and more detailed foliage and architecture. The sound is fantastic, as always, DICE never disappoints in that area.
HOWEVER, if you want to buy this game buy the regular edition. The deluxe edition is buggy and is supposed to come with northern strike, but guess what, EA managed to mess it up for the fans once again. The registration of northern strike just does not work, and if anyone says otherwise they got lucky because more than half of the people who bought the deluxe edition couldn't get it to work or flat out couldn't play bf2142 at all.
Basically, if you want his game, buy the regular version, it's much safer and the game itself is worth every penny you'll spend.
Good Game, but Not Vista Compatible September 2, 2008 Battlefield 2142 is a great game. Unfortunately, the latest patch for it (version 1.5) renders the "deluxe" edition incompatible with Windows Vista. SecuRom, a program used by EA Games to detect when a game has been pirated, pops up an error message whenever one attempts to open the game.
Since most users play the regular edition instead of the deluxe edition, EA has been slow to fix this problem. I would recommend holding off on purchasing the deluxe edition until the next patch is released. It is worth noting, however, that the game is still playable unpatched (although it will be buggier and there will be a much smaller selection of available servers).
An Oldie, but Goodie August 30, 2008 Quite frankly, most first person shooters nowadays have reached their cookie cutter stages. A few aliens here (Halo series), a couple of surprises there (Crysis)... some WWII nostalgia (take your pick, really), add some eccentric voice overage from a couple of cheeky SAS or meatheaded USMCs and viola! You've got yet another first person shooter that contains most of the elements of the last best-selling first person shooter to come out. Thankfully, there are very few developers like DICE Studios that have the creative vision, talent and resources to reinvent the FPS series 'Battlefield.'
Battlefield 2142 is a unique, introspective look into the future of warfare and I daresay it gives much more depth than any of the previous Battlefield experiences to come before it. Not even Ubisoft's GRAW (Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter) series had the insight that Battlefield 2142 has and the multiplayer experience makes GRAW and BF2142s other competitors look like unfinished projects.
Most of the maps are large, if not huge. And although the Walker might be considered by some to be a rip off an AT-ST from Star Wars, it still manages to hold it's own unique distinction and presents a welcome challenge to drive. The Deluxe Edition carries the expansion pack for BF2142 so the purchase value is awesome.
All in all, 2142 is a solid FPS team-based multiplayer experience that begs the rest of the FPS competition to step their game up.
Good Luck, you'll need it. August 23, 2008 Surely EA can't make anything easy for the customer. First of all good luck trying to get this game started without it crashing. Second, good luck trying to activate the expansion pack included on the disc. Everything is on one disc but the expansion pack is for some reason seperated from the rest of the game and you have to go online to activate it. The link provided sends you to the offical website and that's all it does, no way to activate the expansion on the website! Third, good luck trying to track down EA customer support.
Stay as far away from this game as possible.
A hassle to install. Great gameplay though. August 17, 2008 Out of the box, the installer reports an error when installing on computers running Windows Vista. The error states that the game has only been tested on Windows XP. The install continues but it might cause confusion.
Initial startup gave another error about an incorrect DVD and requesting I insert the correct one. That was fixed by updating the game from 1.40 to 1.50.
Two annoying installation issues soured my initial impression.
Game play itself looks great. Resolution maxes out at 1920x1200. For single-player games, the AI is hard-charging and very capable. Multi-player is where this game shines.
A couple of notes: 1) The Northern Strike expansion maps are not available in single-player mode; 2) EA introduced some reward/money system where you can earn credits for upgraded weapons. Seeing all the newer weapons but being unable to choose them from the start was annoying; and 3) Those walkers are friggin mean!
A hassle to setup but gameplay is as good if not better than BF2.
