Product Description AREA 51 VIDEO GAME VERSION.Chances are, if you've ever been in a bowling alley, bar, or pizza parlor in your lifetime, you've encountered at least one Area 51 arcade machine. Originally debuting as a light gun-based shooter, This is perhaps for a reason, considering the original game, let alone its follow-up sequels, wasn't really that great to begin with. Thankfully, Midway's latest version of Area 51 bears little resemblance to its predecessors. Now, Area 51 is a first-person shooter. The original game's titular setting has remained intact, as has its army of mutated villains. However, Midway has decided to inject some storyline into this version, as well as a smattering of Hollywood voice talent and a pretty-nice-looking graphics engine. Unfortunately, all this gussying up can't gloss over what's ultimately an average shooter that doesn't offer up more than a handful of satisfying thrills throughout its single-player and multiplayer modes. As the title would suggest, Area 51 takes place at the infamous, eponymous military installation, where the US government supposedly houses all its secret alien technologies picked up after the Roswell, New Mexico, incident of the 1940s. As one might expect, for this to be much of a game, something has to go horribly wrong; and indeed, it does. You play as Ethan Cole, a HAZMAT operative sent in with his team--a prototypically ragtag bunch--to assess some manner of viral outbreak within the walls of Area 51. After a gruff meet and greet with the local military personnel, you're sent in guns blazing. What you end up finding is a horde of mutated soldiers, scientists, and other alien creatures wandering about the place, looking to infect and/or kill whatever comes their way. Oh, and there's also a whole bunch of nonsense involving the Illuminati, psychics, those little bigheaded, gray-skinned aliens we've all come to know and love, and a whole lot of crazy conspiracies thrown in to the mix.

Fun game. March 31, 2008 This was a quick and fun game. Well worth the money I put in for the game, light gun, and tube tv. All you need to do is shoot to win. Make sure you don't shoot the guys in blue(STAAR team members) Of course, it was unplayable on a regular controller and you'll have a lot more fun with a light gun. I'm currently using the Super Cobra gun which has a ton of features to help blast the bad guys. It's more fun playing with another person because you'll unlock the secret rooms in the game easier.
I love this game June 22, 2007 This is the most unsung game of all time imo. For some reason, it gets trashed for being hard and eating up quarters. In the same breath, someone will defend a game like Pac Man or Battlezone based on those 2 reasons I just mentioned. Why is it not ok for Area 51 to have 2 similarities with other arcade games?
I wore this game out for a week straight on my senior trip in an arcade. It was a skiing trip but I'm a handicap so that didn't go to well with me (I did try though but quit when I ended up laying in a pool of my own blood...stupid skis) This is what got me back into video games. I saw Atari written on the machine and didn't get my hopes up. Before long though, I was in love. It'd been a loooong time since I'd seen a game with all of the things I loved most about the games I used to play (Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, etc). There was definitely enough violence and ammo in this thing for me. Every game I'd seen since my very shortlived Sega Genesis (which was shortlived after my NES thanks to highschool football...yeah...I'm not that handicapped ;) and a drivers liscense), was what they called these RPGs. It looked like those were nothing more than people walking around rooms and opening doors.
Now, sentimental values aside, I think I can still justify complaining over this game's lack of praise. The arcade game *could* be beaten with one, and definitely 2 guns (players), imo. I honestly think that if I owned one of the machines, I could pull it off. Therefore, the ongoing quarter gobbling conspiracy holds no water. I have yet to prove that, of course, but maybe one day I'll get a hold of a machine. The PS version is impossible imo. Believe me, I totally tried but could only succeed with the codes.
It was still fun playing the PS game. It's identical to the arcade game so what you have is a perfect port. I think it's impossible to beat legit only because you're adjusting the sights on your gun with your controller, before firing. That's slows you up a bit when getting invaded heavily. Like I said though, I still enjoyed the heck out of this and reccomend both versions (these are the only 2 versions right?). At home, you obviously get to play it no stop for free. The comedy releif that you can uncover in the bonus levels is GOLDEN! You'll see how to activate all of that when you look up your codes to ultimately beat the game. However, if you do beat this game on you PS legit, let me know. You'll have my respect!
VERY GOOD GAME January 28, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is alot of fun and you dont have to spend 50 cents on it everytime you die. This game is a good action shoot em up game
You can use a Guncon light Gun with this game too which is more fun
A REAL QUARTER SAVER July 29, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I remember getting a used copy of this cool PSX game back when the original game could still be found in a few of the local arcades. It was a great way to spend some time shooting up the aliens, sharpen my skills, and save me a bunch of quarters. Besides, I could visit Area 51 anytime I wanted to (especially the middle of the night). So plug your lightgun in and meet me at Dreamland.
Great game that gets repetitive March 7, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Although this is a great game, that's extremely fun, you can only play it once. The graphics are ahead of their time (not now, but they were), and when you use a lightgun it's a party. But, you end up doing the same thing over and over again. It's like you die, then just play again, so you can die again then repeat. It sort of gets old after a while. If you can get it for a bargain I'd say go for it, but if it's too expensive don't get it, because the time you'll play it won't be worth the money.Graphics: 5/5 (for their time) Fun factor: 4/5 Replayability: 2/5 Sound: 4/5 (just normal) Overall: 4/5
