Editorial Review
Exclusive to the Dreamcast, Mortal Kombat Gold is the latest rendition of Midway's arcade classic fighter. Running at 60 frames per second with high-resolution graphics--a first for this series on any platform--the game boasts the look and feel of a quarter- munching upright arcade machine.

The fighting system in this game is basically the same as it was in Mortal Kombat 3, with the addition of a few new characters and weapons and some subtle gameplay tweaks. There are several new gameplay modes that should excite Mortal Kombat and fighting-game fans. A new battle mode enables would-be combatants to select teams of multiple characters for team-based fighting. There is also a one- and two-player endurance mode, a traditional "versus" mode, two-on-two fighting, and a practice mode. The latter explains to players how to perform fatalities but, disappointingly, doesn't let you perform them.

With only minor updates, Mortal Kombat Gold falls back on its roots. It's a good game if you are an avid Mortal Kombat fan, though others may wish to consider starting their Dreamcast fighting game collection with Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3 Team Battle, and Street Fighter Alpha 3. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Classic Mortal Kombat characters with updated features
  • High-resolution graphics at 60 frames per second
  • Additional gameplay modes increase replayability

Cons:

  • Not much different from Mortal Kombat 3
  • Characters are stiffly animated
  • Background detail scant

2 out of 5 stars MK 4 all over again (LOGO) SMK review   January 4, 2006
This game is a waste of money! If you have MK 4 don't get this game! It's lowsy and is pretty much and updated version of MK4.
Some thing's you might enjoy is that you can be Baraka and Mileena in this version. Good game to rent bad game to buy, enough said! If you would like to see any of my other reviews just look for my logo which is SMK that might be at the top or bottom of the review.OUT!

5 out of 5 stars The best version of Mortal Kombat 4   November 23, 2004
This is the best version of Mortal Kombat 4 you are going to find in a home system. People who say that if you own the Playstation or N64 version and should not upgrade are wrong. The graphics are extremely superior to either system. It is an exact duplicate of the arcade but they have added 5 new characters (Baraka,Milleena,Cyrax,Katana and Kung Lao). They have also added 3 new stages. Bottom line is if you didn't enjoy Mortal Kombat 4 in the arcades then you will not like this game but if you did you owe to yourself to get this version of the game. It really is the best home version you will ever find.

3 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat 4 was already GOLD.   July 20, 2003
If Dreamcast is the only system you own then by all means this is a must have for MK4 fans. However the presence of the new fighters are not enough to constitute a new game. The characters that were not in MK4 bring with them their signature moves to this Sega Dreamcast version, but their weapons have the same moves and fuctions of the already excisting ones. Also the throw moves and bone breaker moves are already owned by MK4 original characters. As for the new fatalities, nothing new either. The MK4 fatalities are some of the best, but the new ones are not impressive here. Save your money if you already own MK4 for Sony PS1 or N64. If you do not own any excisting versions, the needless extras don't hurt I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold   August 25, 2002
Mortal Kombat's big debut for the Dreamcast was highly sucssful and yet people still think it's a waist of time. I highly recomend this game to any MK fan that has a Dreamcast this is a must by even if you never played the MK series you'll fall in love if you like a good fighting game it also brings you dazzeling 3-D graphics and 20 characters (not including seceret characters) this group of fighters contains classic brawlers like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and more! this game is essetial to any hardcore MK fan it also has new fatealitys and brutaltiys with stunning FX olny found on the Sega Dreamcas. overall this game is HOT! but like I said only Fighter Fans.
