| | What Is WAAS? WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System and is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections. As is true of the GPS satellites, there is no extra charge or equipment required to take advantage of WAAS. Because the new Earthmate USB GPS is WAAS-enabled, it is possible where WAAS is available to experience accuracy of under three meters for the majority of tracking time. How WAAS Works The system consists of roughly 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States. These ground stations monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations are located on each coast and these collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction takes into account GPS satellite orbits, clock drift, and signal delays, typically caused by atmospheric conditions. The corrected differential message is broadcast through one of two geo-stationery satellites or satellites with a fixed equatorial position. Any WAAS-enabled GPS, such as the Earthmate USB GPS, is able to read this signal and benefit from the enhanced accuracy. WAAS Performance Considerations As is true for all GPS usage, the location and environment of the user will cause variability in WAAS performance. For instance, the position of the satellites over the equator make it difficult to receive the signals when mountains or trees obstruct a clear view of the horizon. Therefore, it is safe to say that WAAS provides the best performance in open-area situations. Unlike DGPS (differential GPS), WAAS does not require additional receiving equipment.

Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 May 12, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm not at all satisfied with this product. I also own Microsofts GPS and I like it very much. I had the Microsoft one first and wanted to try this to see which is better.
not for truckers May 9, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are a truck diver this is not for you, it help a lillte bit but it gives sometimes routes that are not good for trukers like , thru mountains even trying to choose just interstates.
Hands down the WORST option out there! May 4, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have owned the 2006 version of this program since it came out. I travel for a living and have used it on both coasts and in the midwest EXTENSIVELY. The ONLY thing it is good for is giving you a rough idea of how long your trip will take. THE MAPS ABSOULETLY STINK EVERYWHERE!!!!! There is a MAJOR 4 lane hiway near my home (Hwy 2 from Lincoln NE to Nebraska City, NE) that has been there for 5 to 10 years and it isn't even on the map (It still shows the old 2 lane hwy 2 and tries to redirect you OVER AND OVER AND OVER again). I have found this also in at least 2 other states. It has even directed me to the wrong TOWN!!! (In California when I was going to Stanford University)
SAVE YOURSELF SOME HEADACHE AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!
Save Your Money April 22, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Delorme Earthmate LT-20 ... If I could rate this product lower than one star I would! I purchased this program thinking it was as good as it used to be in 2004. NOT! First off I was led to believe it was ther 2007 version...it's not! It's 2006 Street Atlas. And they want $10 more to give you the 2007 SA update. That's not gonna happen! I 've tried everything I know and can't even make it open to MY city. It opens to Washington DC...I live in Southern CA. It lists my home on a street 1/2 a mile away. Personal preferences such as POIs and info for trip planning have to be set each and EVERY time you open the program. There's no such thing as personalizing it and saving your preferences so you can quickly set up a route knowing that all your preferences are in place. It couldn't even find the North Rim of the Grand Canyon until I put the latitude & longitude in for it! What good is that??? When I set up POI to find Campgrounds in a certain area, it cannot find them even when "I" put the names in....much less perform a search on it's own. This program is absolutely beyond useless. Worst money I've ever spent on a map program. I won't be buying this again!
Several problems with GPS LT-20 April 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently tried this product and found several problems with the result that I will be returning it under Delorme's 30 day Money Back Guarantee - It guides you by saying the name of the street or exit to take however it is sometimes difficult to understand what is said - It does not seem to be as accurate as the navigator which is built into my Toyota. It can be off by 100 feet. By this I mean it thinks the car is located at some location point but in reality that point is 100 feet away. - It guides you by saying something like "take a left turn at Main street that is 100 feet away" but if you are not good at judging distance and if there's no street sign or it is dark then you may miss the turn. In my Toyota, the nav makes a ping sound about 20 feet prior to the turn and before you get to that point, it will say take a left turn at sound so this makes it very easy to know when to turn - Putting the lap top on the passenger chair and running the wire from the GPS on the dashboard to the lap top is not ideal On the positive side, it does an ok job of routing but not as good as the built in unit. Therefore, too many problems so will be returning it
