Product Description
3DO's Army Men titles keep marching onto every platform in sight, including the PlayStation2. The latest is a sequel to the PlayStation's mediocre Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, and there's good news from the front. This sequel is much improved, and not just in graphics, but in gameplay, too.

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 concerns a renegade blue spy named Brigette Bleu who has stolen the plans for a new biological weapon from the evil Tan army. This weapon weakens the plastic in army men bases, so this mission is of paramount importance. It's up to Sarge and his partner Vicki to rescue the spy and stick it to the evil Tan army once again!

Played in an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective Sarge's Heroes 2 pretends to be clever. Its levels take place in the "real world," and use all kinds of props such as soda cans, pencils, etc., but the game is really just about blowing things up. The action is fast, furious, and pretty fun, but, to be honest, lots of shooting games have done the formula better. Though the game's graphics are worlds better than those of the original PlayStation game, it isn't up to the level of games like Quake III: Revolution on the PlayStation2. The game is also hampered by an extremely poor control scheme. You can get used to it, but everything is so sluggish and unresponsive, you might end up putting ol' Sarge on permanent KP duty rather than play any longer. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Green plastic army men are pretty cool
  • Much better than the first one
Cons:
  • Bad controls

4 out of 5 stars Great game. WAY too short.   May 6, 2005
This game is about just as fun as the original army men - sarge's heros for n64 and ps1. the only problem is, it is a short game. i beat it in exactly 6 hours. the original took me about a month to beat.

ps: i am reveiwing the n64 version of this game, but the ps2 one is pretty much the same, except for improved graphics.

Okay, I wrote another review on this game for the play station 1 version. Forget about it. Now, this game is so fun. The sound is like your actually there, the graphics are really good and the enemies AI is good too. I havent played multiplayer yet so I dont know what its like but by the way 1 player is Id say Ill probably think multiplay is good too. I think everybody should rent first THEN BUY! Its a really good game and its a must have!

When I first rented this game at movie gallery, i knew it was going to be awesome, and i was right! this game is so cool and everything about it is awesome! my favorite mission is the one with that scorpion. I think it was the desk mission. Anyway, you have to play this game. IT'S THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as much fun as the n64 version   January 30, 2003
I don't think 3dO put too much thought into updating this game for the increased capabilities of the 128 bit generation of consoles. If you are familiar with this game from previous iterations of the Army Men franchise, you will immediately notice that it is almost identical to the versions which came out three or four years ago for other systems. That is to say, it isn't a terrible game, but it can't compare with more modern games that were designed for the newer consoles, like SOCOM, or Turok. Another disturbing thing about the ps2 version of this game is that it leaves out some of the features of the n64 game, such as the enemy locating radar. This makes it very difficult to sneak up on your enemy, but very easy for them to ambush you. As a result, you do a lot of retreating and hiding, rather than stalking and killing. Also, when you play it in one player mode, it pretty much forces you to procede through each level in a very scripted manner. You get the impression that there is truly only one right way to play the game, and that a successfull mission for one player will be more or less identical to a successfull mission for another player. This may have worked in the previous generation of consoles, but as anyone who owns a current model will agree, you can do much much better than that these days.

The story pretty much pick up where the previous story left off, Sarge is recruited once again to find Plastro and thwart his tan army from exploiting a wormhole that allows them to utilize ferocious new technology in their quest to take over.

If you can find a friend with enough patience to learn the controls for the game, then you will doubtlessly have more fun in the two player mode, much like the original. However, given the limitations of this game, it is unlikely you will be able to convince any of your friends to actually sit down and learn it well enough to be competitive with you.
