Amazon.com Review
Curious about those individuals who drive tricked-out Japanese cars? You know, the lowered Hondas with tires so wide they extend beyond the fenders, the souped-up Toyotas with supersized exhaust pipes, and the custom-painted Nissans with tinted windows and back windshields adorned with adjectives such as "wicked"?

Wonder no more. Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero delves into the world of highway racing and features customized Japanese autos. The basic premise: cruise the Tokyo highway until you find someone who looks a bit too cocky, flash your lights to signal your racing intentions, and commence speeding. The racing physics in the game aren't perfect, and the graphics may not bowl you over, but TXR is a lot of fun, and it can be a very deep game for dedicated players.

There are hundreds of prospective opponents and plenty of ways to upgrade your car, but the one element that will no doubt turn off American racing gamers is the fact that there's only one track for the entire game. If you can handle that, and the lack of any apparent damage from collisions, then TXR is good fun. --Jeff Young

5 out of 5 stars Best Racing Game Ever (Better Than Gran Turismo And Heres Why)   December 22, 2007
The TXR series is one of a kind, this game started the free roam race. What other game has the hottest tuner cars (parts too), 200 virtual miles of tokyo highway, and seemingly endless amount of rivals? Only TXR it's really a shame this game has'nt gotten the shine it deserves, this game reminds of when games were fun, not boring objective ridden programs. A big plus is that it's way more accessible than GT4, meaning that you can just jump into this game and start racing, rather than finding which races your car qualifies for. Sure the graphics arent great and the physics arent the best, but for overall fun, this game is a definite must-own classic for any serious, passionate racer in your family or circle. If you're a motor head and dont own this game and/or it's predecessors along with GT4 than you are'nt a motorhead, you should just kill yourself. BUY IT!!!!!

This game was enjoyable for the first two hours and then its fun factor quickly went down hill. It is far too complicated to figure out the right combination of car, color, license plate, etc that is needed to race the different groups. For Japanese street racing geeks that is probably their idea of great fun, but it's not mine. I regret buying this game.

5 out of 5 stars fun for those who aren't as technical as gran turismo disciples   April 4, 2006

I first bought the later version, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, really liked it and didn't really know if it was worth it to go backwards in games as purchasing this earlier model "Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero." I'm glad I did, it's not as difficult but still fun, the mods you can purchase don't take zillions of credits to start out making your car faster/nicer looking, and the races aren't impossible to beat; whoever gets the largest lead usually keeps it although tougher rivals take longer time to win so they may come back. I also like that they actually give the story of each racer if you want to read about your rivals, their occupation and trivia. For example, one is a factory worker who is very poor but makes up for the lack of perf. parts on his car with very precise control. Another one mentions a young man who enjoys drifting but is too new to the scene and just ends up sliding all over. They all have stories and many hardcore female racers as well, this gives the game personality other games don't offer. As another reviewer stated, the cars ARE real versions, just identified with letters/number codes. I'm not into the tuner scene but even I can still identify different year Supra's, Celica GT's, Acura NSX,(2) different RX7's, EVO's, and many others so don't think they are "generic" racers. You can even start off with All Wheel Drive cars, which most games make you begin with a slow turd of a car. Another thing I like is that you even get "sympathy" points(spirit points I think they call them) just for giving it your best shot/hanging as long as you can; this helps the younger kids or not as quick adults have some fun and accrue credits for parts. I have Gran Turismo 3 and games like that are fun IF you have patience enough to get sucked into them(taken me countless hours on GT3 but after you get sucked in- look out, you are HOOKED), this game is a blast right from the start and graphics are really good too. I like not having cops chasing you- if I wanted cops to chase me, I'd play grand theft auto. They even have interviews with real street racers in Japan(translated conversation) and show the real streets/race cars they race- pretty interesting. They also have the movie trailer for Fast and Furious which is really old now but still fun to watch. This is a classic fun racing game that won't have you beating your head into the wall with diffucult license tests that you keep missing by .003 of a second and require precise driving skills- drifting and unreal physics are fun sometimes. I haven't seen any domestic muscle cars yet and although these cars are stock looking when you get them, if you must have American Muscle with lopey, rowdy V8 power, you should probably pass; I need it in real life but I hang my Hemi hat up for a few minutes when I sit down and play my PS2- it's more fun that way.

This game is a worthy purchase...lots of rivals to race and cars to customize. Graphics are descent as well as the in-game music. If you enjoyed Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, then you will enjoy this one as well.
