5 out of 5 stars this is one of the best games ever   November 27, 2008
This game is absolutely deserving of an 8.5 out of 10 and the only reason I
can't give it a 10 is because it is not quite as technical as a lot of other
games. The closest thing I have played to this game is golden eye except this game is better visually especially considering the fact that cold winter is brutal. I don't know if I have ever played a game where you can shoot a persons head off and then watch it roll. It is truly an amazing experience. Something else that is quality about this little gem is it's length and difficulty, it isn't extremely hard but compared to quite a few other games it is very satisfying if you are a hardcore gamer! I hope this was helpful if not I really don't care!

4 out of 5 stars Great great 1st person shooter for ps2   October 29, 2008
I think the best part of this game is going head to head with up to 3 friends. Realistic weapons and environments make it more enjoyable for me than some others in this Genre.

4 out of 5 stars EXPLOSIVE ENTERTAINMENT 8.5 OUT OF 10   October 10, 2008
I don't see why PS2 gets such a bad rap when it comes to its small library of FPS titles. Even though it's a small collection there are still quite a few games that can be just as good as any FPS on Xbox or Xbox 360. Cold Winter is one of these games. Unfortunately, Cold Winter didn't get the attention it deserved and didn't sell that well. This is a shame because Cold Winter is actually a damn good game, despite the fact it requires an entire memory card to save data. It's rather bloody and it can be downright intense during some of the gun battles. The story is also pretty cool as well, something that is rarely said about FPS titles.
WHAT THE GAME IS: A first-person shooter that has nothing to do with space marines unlike most FPS titles. You play as a man named Andrew Sterling, an M16 Agent who gets captured and put in Chang Political Prison in China. When he is freed by a woman named Kim, a longtime acquaintance of his, he shoots his way through the prison and ends up in Hong Kong. It's there where his longtime friend/boss assigns him with a mission in Africa. What starts out as a fairly easy mission, ends up becoming a war zone fueled by an underground organization. Andrew and Kim must find out who is behind this and terminate the organization. This game also has a series of seemingly random bits of history information that talks about events in World War II, and the eventual downfall of man in World War III. They may be random but they seem to fit into the story and actually seem to have a purpose. This game also delves into more political issues than most games.
GRAPHICS: This is one of the low points of the game. There is no reason for game to look like this in 2005. The cutscenes look good, but in real-time the game is ugly mostly in character designs. I liked how the developer designed the environments however.
MUSIC: It's pretty good and really knows how to represent the mood, especially during the intense gun battles that rage in the game.
SOUND: The shooting sounds are good, and I really like the voice-actors in the game. Most of them are British, but they all have believable accents. I also love the sounds of when you blow a limb off an enemy (Ha, ha! You have no head!)
GAMEPLAY: This game uses similar controls to Xbox shooters by using the R1 button to fire, and they work quite well on a Playstation controller. In fact these FPS controls are nearly flawless and work just as well as any shooter on Xbox. You only use real-world weapons, but these feel more satisfying than most of the futuristic weapons I've used in past shooters. This is probably because this game has a feature that is not in most shooters, the ability to shoot limbs off an enemy. If you have a powerful enough weapon like an AK47, a shotgun or a sniper rifle, you blow a limb off an enemy. This just doesn't mean you blow the whole thing off in one shot. You can shoot off the arms and legs piece by piece until they reach the joint area. Usually when you hit an enemy in the head with one of these weapons, it explodes like a melon. You can also search for items your enemies have on them. This game also has a lot of explosions. The med pack is unlimited so you can use it whenever you need it which makes things go a whole lot smoother. There are also a ton of items you can find in the game to increase your rank as you complete missions.
OVERALL: It may have graphical and some technical issues like collision detection, but it really is a fun game to play, even though you need an entire memory card to save data. If you have a PS2, and you want a really cool FPS, this is a must-buy. This isn't for kids though, considering the fact the F-word constantly pops up in the dialogue. Strictly for adults.
THE GOOD: Cool weapons, lots of blood and gore, intense action, lots of explosions, lots of things to find, cool story, neat characters, good music, and good voice-actors.
THE BAD: Ugly graphics, collision detection issues sometimes, and the fact this game requires an entire memory card to save data.

4 out of 5 stars COLD WINTER! HELL YEAH!   April 29, 2008
I'd hadnt ever heard of this game till i saw it on amazon. I loved the graphics the weapons, the aiming. and especially kim (big boobed side kick.) the game was a ton of fun and very few complaints. but like all good there is almost alwasy bad. The bad, game had a ton of bugs. Like Chairs floating and dead bodies stuck in mid air. At one point you can see straight threw the walls. but the story line and the graphics were way above average. i wish i had a 4.5 button instead of a 4 or 5 cause this game fell perfectly inbetween. Deffiently worth playing u wont regret it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Straightforward, Fun, Shooter With Solid Production Values   October 8, 2007

Cold Winter is indeed a sleeper, as other reviewers have stated here.

It will remind players of both GoldenEye (N64) and Half Life. It deserves to be kept in a first-person-shooter collection.

I'm glad I found it! Like a lot of casual console gamers, I am sticking to my PS2 until there is a must-own game for the PS3 (which will probably be GTA4). So I searched the back catalog for quality shooters to add to my game collection. I found Project Snowblind, the Socom series, Killzone, Freedom Fighters, and this gem. It could have been published in 2000, given that its traits and engine are strongly influenced by Half Life (my favorite FPS ever).

Cold Winter has 8 medium-sized environments, split into 15 levels total. An experienced gamer could breeze through the game in under 14 hours. There is nothing groundbreaking in its puzzles, interactive environment, or graphics. But Cold Winter does everything very well. Smooth frame rates, great voice acting and sound effects, fair cut scenes, descent story, good AI, excellent real-world weapon inventory, and most important, excellent gameplay and intuitive controls. You will be engaging in firefights within minutes of saving your profile.

As is the case with older, less sophisticated first person shooters, being stealthy only delays the inevitable - you are going to have to engage the enemy and get into serious firefights. But at least with being stealthy you can take-out the bad guys more swiftly (usually with a grenade or a shotgun). The bonus objectives are hit-and-miss. One early bonus objective is to pick your way into an armory to obtain an AK-47. But you'll end-up with an AK-47 in the next level (possibly minutes later) when you encounter enemies using them. The tools and weapons you can build from found objects adds a simple puzzle feature to the game (not annoying but not essential to building a winning strategy). During the game you will gather intelligence, which adds nice details to the story. Sound design and mixing are top-notch, if a little dated. So is art and character design. And the ability to search bodies for tools and armor is a welcome addition to the genre.

Like Half Life, you will feel like the action is unfolding on a giant Hollywood set. For example, there's a battle in a town square that is a highlight of the game. How you get through that battle depends on how well you use the environment and seek higher ground. It's simple by today's standards, but the execution is awesome. The comparisons to GoldenEye were right on the money. It is a very fun game you will want to replay (assuming it hooks you early).

This is the kind of game where finding enough ammo will get you through most levels. Or you can build tools and time bombs and find alternate ways to win. But either method will take you through the same storyline.

Voice talent as mentioned before is very good. Actors include Nathaniel Parker, Colin McFarlane, Enn Reitel, Kristy Wu (from Buffy), and Tom Baker (from Doctor Who), who adds his famous velvet baritone as the villain. Great work.

If you liked the gun battles against the Marines in Half Life, you will certainly enjoy this game. And I found the action to be far better and more replayable than Red Faction (Red Faction II is a big improvement over the original). I sold Red Faction. I am keeping this one. It is a great find.

Cold Winter does something that has been done before and does it extremely well. It is fun, engaging, and cinematic at times. Go get it!
