Amazon.com Review
When Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast, it opted to make its excellent sports titles available for other consoles. And not a moment too soon. Competition is always good and Sega Sports titles, like NBA 2K2, are some of the best in the business.

NBA 2K2 features all the teams, rosters, and, most importantly, rule changes (like the now-legal zone defense) found in the real NBA. Player faces have been mapped to realistic body types (complete with tattoos), so you can identify a big man like Shaq or a speedster like Iverson without looking at their numbers. The game takes full advantage of the graphics-rendering power of advanced consoles by including better texturing, lighting effects, facial animations, and a higher polygon count to make sure all the jukes, spins, jumps, and dunks are as realistic as possible. The audio is also good, particularly the play-by-play, which is accurate and speedy.

The controls are intuitive--even for people used to the Dreamcast--especially in the area of on-the-fly play calling. You can now use the right analog stick instead of the digital pad, so now you don't have to take your thumb off the main controls (left analog stick) to call a new play or change formations. Other controls let you quickly and fluidly box out your opponent, spin, shoot, pass, fake, and dunk.

There are also eight street-ball courts, and this addition makes for almost an entirely new game. In this respect it is the equal of the EA Sports NBA Live series. But NBA 2K2 surpasses EA's title with its excellent AI. This game is challenging, satisfying, and fun in both single and multiplayer modes. --Bob Andrews

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics
  • Intuitive controls
  • Great AI
Cons:
  • A release date too long after the start of the NBA season

(This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.)

Amazon.com Product Description
NBA 2K2 is bursting with new features, including online console gameplay for up to eight players. Updated online functionality also allows gamers to track their wins and losses to see how they rank among gamers online. A smarter AI means improved team rotation, rebounding, and all-around tenacious D. The new steal system lets players fill the passing lanes and attempt to steal the ball, and a revamped low-post game lets you exploit the defender with lightning-quick drop-step moves, back him down for a rim-rattling dunk, or shoot a sweet fadeaway jumper. New street courts let you hoop it up at urban playground courts, including Oakland's legendary Mosswood Park. The game includes updated rosters, arenas, team uniforms, and signature moves for the 2001-2002 season. The integration of new NBA rules lets you add new strategy to the game by choosing to play man or zone defense.

5 out of 5 stars Basketball on the Dreamcast at its finest!   January 29, 2004

After jumping ship from NBA Live I can truly say that NBA 2K2 is worth every penny. The graphics are sweet, the sound it great and the moves are awesome and the replay value in this game is unheard of. When you think that you've experienced it all you can find a new way to enjoy it.

A BY FAR great improvement over 2K1 which suffered with control issues and over strict gameplay. This is a must have and the intro is so cool I watch it every time I play the game and never get tired of it!

When you finish playing NBA 2K2 you can truly say "I love this game!"

NBA 2K2 is a great game. it's fun. i like to create-a-team and create-a-player on customize mode. THIS GAME is better than NBA 2K. YOU can PLAY on like 5 or 6 street courts. YOU can play
2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, or regular 5 on 5. YOU CAN still go on exhibition mode just like on NBA 2K. NBA 2K2 IS fun AND cool.
my brother, and my friend like this game.
YOU can play as M.J., Shaq, KOBE, A.I., KEvin Garrett, TRacy McGrady, Vince Carter and other players. that's why I rated this game 5/5. ...

5 out of 5 stars NBA 2k2 is the best basketball game out there!   March 5, 2002

nba 2k2 is the simply the best basketball game out there right now. If you don't own a dreamcast then go out and buy one. I hear people say that nba 2k2 is the same as nba 2k1. let me tell you, it is not. I have nba 2k1 and if you play against the computer in rookie you will always make a shot and never missed it. that stinks. if you play the computer in all-star you can't even make a basket. I was playing against the bulls and i was the lakers. they were beating me 68 to 21 at the end of the 2 quarter. that [is not good]. No one can beat the computer in all star in nba 2k1. Simply because the computer cheats. Nba 2k2 doesn't have those mistakes. In all-star scoring is better then nba 2k1 because it isn't as hard as nba 2k1 is. Plus the computer is tough too. The AI also improved in nba 2k2. Now you can actually play defense. Shaq can pack who ever tried to get in his way. With rick fox guarding at his best and kobe too. Nba 2k1 defense simply [does not work]! you can't play defense because the AI is stupid. When theres another guy driving in the lane oneal doesn't go and try to block the shot or no one else in the team does. so the only thing in nba 2k1 is the offense. only when your playing in rookie mode. Nba 2k2 graphics look better then nba 2k1 plus the rosters are great. i like playing with the wizards simply because of course michael jordan, kwane brown, richard hamilton, with a little tyrone lue in it. Well im going to stop typing because i've maade my point. So go buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to try to miss. Jump shots are almost automatic. Stick with 2k1.
