4 out of 5 stars Great, but not as good as the other version   October 7, 2008
I had the misfortune to play this game with the Xbox 360, so when I bought it for the PS2, I was dismayed at the lack of clarity and that the world tour had little depth. Well, part of the it was that I was playing mostly alone, so I didn't really get to have the fun time of just playing songs, so I missed the depth of the expanded world tour.
However, the game still rocks, and I can't wait for RB2!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular   June 24, 2008

We all knew that we'd be getting a stripped-down version of Rock Band for the PS2, but let it be said that despite it's last-gen flaws and missing options, Rock Band still manages to be a spectacular rhythm game. As one could guess, Rock Band is best enjoyed as a party game with others, and when the instruments are implemented, they work wonderfully to serve their purpose. The 58 included songs here, including cuts from Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Jet, and the Ramones among others; are all implemented well, and the in-game screen is flawless as you perform these tunes. While nearly everything about the PS2 version of Rock Band is spot-on, there are moments where you will notice just how stripped-down this conversion is. Most notably is the fact that you will not be able to download new content, and an incredibly stripped-down Band World Tour mode is what really hurts the PS2 version of Rock Band, but this was expected to begin with, which doesn't make these lackings a surprise. What is surprising is how spot-on spectacular the PS2 version of Rock Band ends up being, as there are still a variety of options to explore and modes to play, whether it be alone or as a party game as intended. All in all, if Guitar Hero got you into rhythm gaming and a PS2 is your only option, Rock Band is an essential pickup.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on!   April 22, 2008

I bought this game after playing Rock Band on a friend's PS3 a few weeks ago. No, the PS2 version isn't as cool as the PS3 version -- you can't create your own characters, and it doesn't have the same career/tour challenges as the PS3 version. It's pretty much just Guitar Hero with drums and singing.

That said ... if you already own Guitar Hero and a couple of guitars, the game-only edition of Rock Band for PS2 is well worth buying. You can pick up a USB microphone for not too much money (Amazon probably won't let me quote a price, but it's less than half the cost of the game). I didn't care about the drums, so didn't buy them, but you can get them separately too.

I'm especially excited about Rock Band because I like to play karaoke games and my husband doesn't. He won't play Karaoke Revolution or SingStar with me, but he'll play Rock Band -- he plays lead guitar and I sing. Or we can both play guitar, with one of us on bass and the other on lead.

The songs are good, though some are not the ones I would have chosen (if I had to pick a Nirvana song, it would have been "Smells Like Teen Spirit," though that one would be a bit tricky to sing; my choice of REM song would not have been "Orange Crush," etc.) However, the inclusion of "Here It Goes Again" by OK Go was one of my biggest motivations for buying this game.

I hope Harmonix will put out some expansion discs, like they did with Guitar Hero (well, there was the 80s edition, anyway). An 80s edition would be pretty awesome. It wouldn't sell very well, but I'd love a chick songs' edition. :-)

Anyway, the bottom line is that this game is a very good buy if you already own guitars and a microphone, and don't care about the drums.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Hero   April 6, 2008
480 progressive scan and widescreen support! Of course it would still look better on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on your HD TV, but are the extra features really worth shelling out $400 to $500 for? I agree it is a must have for any system you might already own, playing it with my friends, we would start to remember old rock band fantasies, the usual hangout quickly turned into a party, your friends will probably thank you for it. I already have the old guitar hero controller, and mic, they both work fine for this game, so I saved some money by just buying the drum kit and game only. The mic will only work with a controller, so only 3 people could readily play, unless you use a multi tap, but most people would rather take their turns playing with the drums anyways.

5 out of 5 stars Playstation 2 Rock Band Is Playstation 3 Instrument Compatible   January 25, 2008

This ground-breaking game/musical experience is even better since I was able to purchase the Playstation 3 Instruments and they worked with RockBand for the Playstation 2 game. This was a life-saver at Christmas time since the Playstation 2 Instruments weren't released until 3 days before Christmas and were in short supply. My kids aged 9 to 18 are all very happy with RockBand for Playstation 2 and say it plays just like the Playstation 3 Version
