Editorial Review
Combining the road rage-inspired dark fantasies of Mad Max with a twist of campy black humor, Twisted Metal III is a worthy addition to the emerging car combat genre. Though the game is sure to be a hit with newcomers of the series, fans of the previous Twisted Metal games will find that TM III doesn't quite fire on all cylinders.

The story runs somewhere between Mortal Kombat and your wildest dreams of demolition derbies. But the paper-thin plot doesn't matter: you have a rad car and aren't afraid to use it. Whether you choose to control the monster truck driven by the little old lady, Mr. Grimm's motorcycle o' death, or what is quite possibly the coolest ice-cream truck ever, you'll speed and skid around the asphalt-covered levels, grabbing power-ups and blowing up your opponents with a wide array of vehicle-mounted weaponry.

In a game like this, several things are key: physics, control, and level design. Twisted Metal III departs from the previous games in the franchise. The levels are smaller and the physics and controls conspire to make the vehicles handle oddly. The bottom line: car-smashing fun that doesn't quite live up to the glories of the prequels. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • Cool vehicles
  • The London level
  • Knocking your foes off the rooftops in Tokyo
Cons:
  • Driving in reverse using the analog controls
  • There are some small, small levels

4 out of 5 stars Twisted Metal 3 is a great PS1 game for all   May 17, 2008
Twisted Metal 3 is a game I played for a very long time back in the day. It has a great soundtrack, quite a few levels, many characters, and unique enviroments. I deffinately reccomend this game to anyone who plays video games, new or seasoned.

I think I did. Dunno. Its "Darn" good. TM series are like Destruction Derby to me, but less graphical.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite PS games.   July 12, 2007
I got this game as a Christmas gift quite a few years ago and it's still one of my favorite Playstation games. Here's why...

First, for those who don't know what Twisted Metal is about, basically you have a vehicle (that you can choose) and you play against other vehicles attempting to damage the other players' cars. To do this, you must collect weapons that are strewn around each level and shoot at the different cars. Some levels have bosses which are much harder to destroy. Also, on some levels the cars regenerate and you must destroy them completely one more time to move onto the next level. Now onto the positives.

First of all, the graphics are pretty good for a PS1 game. They're not great but they're far better than the graphics on most other PS1 games that were released around the same time period as TMIII. Second, although it's a great game to play as a single player, it's even better as a multiplayer game. I have to admit a couple levels as well as a couple bosses are difficult to beat by yourself so being able to play with another person helps a lot. Third, there's quite a few awesome vehicles to choose from. Each car has a special weapon that produces more power than the other weapons. For example, Thumper has a "wave" that he can shoot out to push cars a good distance, Flower Power has flowers that shoot out to hit a car that's in close proximity to it, etc. Fourth, each level is very different from the others but they're all fun. My favorite is probably the North Pole one. Lastly, nothing beats good music to listen to while playing a video game. There are quite a few good songs to listen to while you play.

The only negative I can think of is the length of the game. It's relatively short (only several levels) but replayability is high.

I've played only one other Twisted Metal game (can't remember which one it was) but TMIII appears to be one of the best ones in my book. I highly recommend it.
