Amazon.com Review
In Twisted Metal: Small Brawl, kiddie-size versions of the nihilistic, deranged, and otherwise generally unfriendly automotive psychopaths that star in Sony's Twisted Metal games are now behind the transmitters of tiny radio-controlled cars. How do the childlike doppelgaengers of TM favorites Calypso, Sweet Tooth, Mr. Grimm, Outlaw, and others fare in the stripped down, (somewhat) less violent world of miniature automotive combat? Well, the goals remain the same as in other Twisted titles: pick up various power-ups, then smash, bash, and trash other cars in a variety of locales until you are the last car standing. Sadly, however, the action isn't the only thing watered down.

Veterans of the series will immediately wonder why the graphics appears to have taken a massive step backward in quality. All of the cars and scenery (parks, kitchen, movie theater, etc.) are incredibly blocky and lack detail. Small Brawl's visuals are much worse than those of even the first TM game.

TM veterans will also find the controls are different from the other games in the series, and are not nearly as responsive as they should be. At the same time, the action has been pulled back from its frantic, ferocious edge, and the game's traditional dark and foreboding mood has been lightened to make the game more appealing and accessible to kids.

If you enjoy the other Twisted Metal games, Small Brawl offers precious little to get your motor running, as it lacks the intensity or general playability of the motorized mayhem you've come to know and love. Small Brawl is also too drab for anyone over the age of 12 with decent reflexes. However, if you're planning to entertain some younger, would-be metal twisters, it's worth a spin. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Softened violence, atmosphere, and challenge make this game more accessible to younger players
  • Kids will like the demolition-derby-style gameplay and silly graphics
Cons:
  • Graphics don't match quality of others in the series
  • Poor controls
  • Probably too bland for gamers older than 12

Amazon.com Product Description
Maintaining the essence of pure car combat, Twisted Metal: Small Brawl adds a twist to the genre. The game features a mischievous crew of half-pint terrors in remote-controlled cars. They tear through abandoned movie theaters, bowling alleys, sandboxes, and anywhere else they can wreak havoc. Using an innovating artillery of imaginative weapons, these ruthless rascals can bring down even the most towering environments. Their weapons include a carefully crafted spit-wad launcher, flaring firecrackers, and stink bombs.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible, but better than 1 and 2   February 17, 2006

This game isn't that great. I didn't like the characters. The worlds in this one is retarded and it was an easy game. But it's still better than parts 1 and 2.

3 out of 5 stars you probably want to rent this before you buy   December 5, 2002

this game is ok. the graphics are ok, but the cars look like crooked polygons. The controls are easy, but the weapons seem sluggish. also is a bit easy. one thing you will like is that they put the best cars from the series in there.they changed the specials on a few cars,(and modified some) but the new specials are pretty good.i like playing as sweet tooth, whose special was changed to an ice crean bar that slides around until it hits a car a few times. the levels are so-so, you will probably only like half of them. also, its a little more based towards the younger crowd, so it might seem a little kiddie to older people. all in all, an ok game, but you should rent first to see if you like it.

I say that this game is the bomb, but just as good as TW 2. I rented it last summer and it was AWSOME. 12 year-old gamer, you STINK! I am buying the game today!

5 out of 5 stars Twisted Metal:Small Brawl rocks....   July 18, 2002

Out of all the Twisted Metal games that has ever come out, Twisted Metal: Small Brawl is the one you'll hear the least about. Yet, in my opinion, is about one of the most fun of them all to play. It came out after Twisted Metal Black. It's easy to see that this game is pointed more toward the younger crowd but, being a Twisted Metal fan, I loved it just the same. In this game, Calypso is a schoolyard bully who harasses the characters into joining in an RC car version of the Twisted Metal contest. All of the game's drivers are all children who attend the same grade school as him. They all command miniature versions of the cars they drive when they get older. Eleven characters are available from the get go with 5 more to unlock, having mostly every one of your favorites in the roster. There's 8 levels to battle in..Playground Peril, Carn-o-maul, Easy Death Oven, Minigolf Mayhem, Meat your Maker, Gridiron Gore, Treetop Rumble and Now Slaying!. It's a younger, more lighthearted approach to the Twisted Metal formula but fun. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but easy...   June 26, 2002

I found Twisted Metal Small Brawl to be entertaining, but I beat the game the second time I played it! Not very challenging once you get past Trapper (a psychopath vehicle in the Minigolf Mayhem stage). I will still definitely play this game because of the concepts, graphic design, and themes are very interesting. It's just not very challenging. It's the whole scheme of it though, because I can't wait to see how Calypso teaches all the opponets to be careful what they wish for. Just like he gave Hammerhead his dream of being a rock star - but in a boy band?! Ha ha ha, I love it. I would definitely buy this game even without the challenge element for the sheer entertainment of it.
