4 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements keeps getting better   October 15, 2008
I've been a user of the full version of Photoshop for several years, but there are some things Photoshop Elements does even better; specifically, digital media identification, organization and management. Even before Adobe Bridge was created for managing files among the array of Adobe applications, I was an early user of Photoshop Album because of its tag method for media identification and catalog system for file organization and management.

The tag (aka keyword) method of identification makes it possible to identify images with multiple tags beginning with four preset categories (People, Events, Other, and Places), but customizable with your own categories, subcategories, subcategory within a subcategory, and keyword tags. Even better, the catalog system of organization does not depend on descriptive filenames or folders, but keeps track of the location of its files wherever they are on your system, including multiple folders and drives. While you can create new catalogs for individual projects/subjects, the flexibility of tags has prompted me to build my collection of several thousand digital images in the same catalog so that a single click of any tag will bring up every image with that tag from the beginning of the catalog.

As Bridge emerged and has evolved, Album's cataloging system seemed to be in decline because Photoshop Album revisions dried up with Starter Edition 3.2 in April 2007 and Bridge was not designed to convert Album's .psa catalogs. While I turned to Bridge because of it's superior batch processing features, capable of using Photoshop's Actions, I missed Photoshop Album's catalog system.

Only recently did I discover that Photoshop Elements became the successor to Photoshop Album, incorporating more and more image editing functions, and was designed from the outset to convert Photoshop Album catalogs. But beware, many, including myself, have had problems with Elements 6.0's inability to convert .psa catalogs and have had to resort to version 5 to do the conversion. I don't know if Elements 7.0 fixed the version 6.0 glitch.

Be aware also if you purchased Elements 6.0 after Adobe's announcement of Elements 7.0, Adobe offers a free upgrade except for the cost of shipping. Call their Customer Service line at 800-585-0774 for instructions.

1 out of 5 stars Faulty software   October 15, 2008
I COULD NOT LOAD THIS SOFTWARE. I REPORTED THIS TO THE SUPPLIER IMMEDIATELY, AND ONCE MORE SUBSEQUENTLY, AND ASKED TO RETURN THE ITEM. TO DAT I HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE.

5 out of 5 stars New User of Photoshop w/ About 30 Hours of Training   October 12, 2008
This is a remarkable program with lots of great features. After the next 30 hours (night school, intermediate level) and some practice, I plan to make composite presentation photos of designs for landscapes and interiors.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent upgrade from PE2   October 9, 2008
I have been using Elements 2 for some time and find it to be an excellent tool yet I felt ready to upgrade and liked the new features that 6 offers. The reason I am not buying PE 7 is because 1. Based on reviews the only significant difference is heavy marketing of web albums (I am a flikr user so don't need) and option to change background color (I like the greys). I downloaded the free version first (which everyone should do as there are some complaints about system stability) and found no problems with crashing and so forth. There is a significant upgrade in quality compared to the earlier version, especially in the image enhancing tools which is what I principally use. The color curves option is fantastic and the ability to fine tune shadows and highlights is excellent. The quick selection tool is also a real time saver after years of using the magnetic lasso. Also raw capability is a welcome advantage and the interface is excellent. This is a wonderful choice for early version users of PE who are ready to upgrade (download free version first of course).

4 out of 5 stars PhotoShop ver. 6   October 8, 2008
I bought the upgrade of this in July after our Alaska trip and then I found out there was a newer version coming out in Oct. that they so carefully neglected to tell me about, which I think is pretty crappy!! I do like it, but some of the information on the tools still does not explain it adequately enough for me to understand it. I guess I need to sit down with the book and make notes. I do like the software, as I was using ver. 5 before, to me it is the best you can buy. I had software that came with my Canon camera and HP printer, but they didn't even come close to Adobe.
