Product Description
After many battles, a former kingdom has been divided into many small principalities and earldoms. The king's troops were pushed back into one last royal province, and the rulers of the other provinces waged terrible, destructive wars against one another. The whole land fell into a state of chaos and now the former royal capital itself is under siege by the armies of the rebel lords. 5 out of 5 stars great game (still)!!!!   November 13, 2007

I originally got this game not long after it came out, and absolutely loved it. Then somewhere along the line I lost it, only to come across this version years later online. I bought it again, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I still loved it! Yes, the graphics are not up to today's standards, but they're still pretty dang good. The attention to detail is great. This isn't like going back and playing Atari, Knights and Merchants is an exciting, challenging game, with good sound effects and music. Anyone under 21 and used to World of Warcraft style graphics and effects would probably not be overly impressed, but if you're an older gamer, try this game! I get lost in it for hours and hours, trying to build the best town I can and fight off the enemy...probably not that great for my life in general, but definitely a sign of how fun this game is!

3 out of 5 stars It Shows It's Age   September 1, 2007

It's a crying shame that technology goes so quickly that the state-of-the-art games we all loved yesterday seem sometimes almost painfully outdated and sometimes unusable a couple years later.

After reading the two other revues on this game, I gave it a shot. I quit it after about an hour out of disgust.

It's game design and engine, as well as graphics (which I didn't take too seriously, I realize good graphics do not equal a good game) were just hopelessly outdated.

I had glimers of something that was, during it's time, a great game a few years ago, but unless you're just really into beyond-retro with confusing interface...I'd pass this by now. For those of you who DO like the old clunky games you have to figure out how to play like a deranged puzzle, you just might see a gem in hiding as I did...but unlike me, perhaps you'll be willing to spend the time to deal with the antiquated functions to reveal the whole. I wish you luck.

Very nice older game which includes the original game Shattered Kingdoms. The graphics aren't up to today's standards, but they are crisp and clean and still hold up well. Nice soundtrack and fun gameplay make this a winner with lots of replay ability. Do not pay $100 to some of the people selling the hard copy of this game. It is indeed very rare, but if you do a search for it, you can find a ton of sites that you can download the game from for under 10 bucks.

4 out of 5 stars A very good game   January 5, 2006

This is an old game, but it is still worth playing if you ever get the chance (although I'm sure many people these days wouldn't be interested in playing older games).

In this game you are loyal to the King who has been attacked. The kingdom is divided into many smaller fiefdoms/nations and you must now take all the land back. It won't be an easy task...

First of all, you have to understand that this isn't a combat only oriented game (like myth). You have to build tons of different buildings later on, and sometimes it is annoying how you are bogged down in these details, but it isn't too bad. You have to build different buildings for stone, gold, wood, etc. It even gets into more detail by making you harvest grain, then mill it, then send it to the baker. So yes, there are lots of buildings, and you need to make sure you plan out your city properly or you will be in a world of hurt.

There is a lot of fighting in this game though, after all, your mission is to take back all the lands for the King. There is a wide variety of units you can use in this game: archers, swordsmen, horsemen, spearmen, axemen, etc. Obviously they all have their own strengths and weaknesses and you should field as many different types as possible to ensure your success on the field of battle. When you train your units (yes, you have to send your peasants in to be trained, peasants that could be used to chop wood, etc.) they are put in regiments. You can combine different regiments (of the same type) to get huge regiments if you desire. There are different formations you can put your regiments in (just like in Myth and probably a million other games).

The levels are designed really well, and I was struck by how good the graphics were at the time. I also really like the music (yes, I still do) and one nice thing about the cd is that you can stick it into your cd player and listen to all the tracks from the game. Very nice. I'm almost tempted to tell you that the cd is worth $9.99 just for the music, I really like it that much.
