Product Description Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Award for his work on global warming and the possible ills the world could suffer. Award winning Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition also includes another action-packed EA game - Northern Strike. Battlefield 2142 - In 2006 a climatic catastrophe triggered a new ice age on earth. A hundred years later, everyone gave up on finding a solution to the problem and two superpowers were formed: Europe and on the other side the Pan Asian Coalition - causing an arms race. Now it's 2142 and the war for the few resources left has already been going on for a few years, with no end in sight. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech weaponry, including assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also take control of the most lethal vehicles known to man. Massive battle Walkers wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When taking on this futuristic armor players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new hi-tech countermeasures like EMP grenades and smart mines to level the playing field. Epic online gameplay for up to 64 players drops gamers on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their team-mates. In Northern Strike, it's a few years into the most desperate struggle in the history of mankind, and with the conflict focused around the Mediterranean, the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) seizes the chance to claim the undefended natural resources beneath the ice of mainland Europe. By the time the EU is aware of their presence, the enemy is firmly entrenched in the continent's harsh ice fields, among abandoned city ruins and soaring mountain peaks. Only fierce close-quarters infantry battles along claustrophobic city streets and narrow rocky passes will eject the PAC forces from their well-defended positions and push them back towards the sea. Good Luck, you'll need it. August 23, 2008 Surely EA can't make anything easy for the customer. First of all good luck trying to get this game started without it crashing. Second, good luck trying to activate the expansion pack included on the disc. Everything is on one disc but the expansion pack is for some reason seperated from the rest of the game and you have to go online to activate it. The link provided sends you to the offical website and that's all it does, no way to activate the expansion on the website! Third, good luck trying to track down EA customer support.
Stay as far away from this game as possible.
A hassle to install. Great gameplay though. August 17, 2008 Out of the box, the installer reports an error when installing on computers running Windows Vista. The error states that the game has only been tested on Windows XP. The install continues but it might cause confusion.
Initial startup gave another error about an incorrect DVD and requesting I insert the correct one. That was fixed by updating the game from 1.40 to 1.50.
Two annoying installation issues soured my initial impression.
Game play itself looks great. Resolution maxes out at 1920x1200. For single-player games, the AI is hard-charging and very capable. Multi-player is where this game shines.
A couple of notes: 1) The Northern Strike expansion maps are not available in single-player mode; 2) EA introduced some reward/money system where you can earn credits for upgraded weapons. Seeing all the newer weapons but being unable to choose them from the start was annoying; and 3) Those walkers are friggin mean!
A hassle to setup but gameplay is as good if not better than BF2.
a lemon best to be avoided but good gameplay August 11, 2008 There is a reason consoles have gained more market share. You put the game in and it works. If you can get past that first step your game sucks and you lost.
Welcome to EA Games or you'll wish you hadn't wasted your money.
Now let me start by saying I love this game. I think it is a great mix of modern and futuristic in an FPS. I loved playing it when I was able to. After a while it just stops working. I've patched it, didnt worked uninstalled it, reinstalled it-left it unpatched then had problems with punkbuster not updating, uninstalled it reinstalled it patched it, did a securom workaround for their buggy antipiracy software, manually updated punkbuster finally got it working played for 3 days then it stops working again-did a system restore didnt work, uninstalled it and reinstalled still didn't work. Workaround in forums are for xp not vista. Gave up for now. Will try again later but this will be my last ea product. I never had so many problems and in trying to get the northern strike expansion to work don't even get me started.
Anyway....great game but crappy software all around(your piracy paranoia has doomed all those who actually PAID for it)...wish it was on a console that I could just put in and play online like right NOW! Thanks again EA!
A Great Game. A Great Value July 29, 2008 This is a great value. You get both Battlefield 2142, a great game, bundled with it's booster pack, or miniature expansion pack, for a very reasonable price. The game has few bugs, and has a great community. I highly recommend this game!
Great Game BUT..................................... July 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Buyer Beware!!!
This deluxe edition claims to have the booster pack Northern Strike as well but either this is not the case or EA has some serious problems here. Just search the internet and you will find numerous threads on this issue with the game deluxe edition.
In short, the game installs fine claiming that you are getting both the orginal version as well as the booster pack. However, once you are done activating and registering your account you can ONLY play the orginal BF2142 maps with no issues. But once you try to access any of the Northern Strike booster pack maps the game acts like you dont have the booster pack installed and directs you to EA link to purchase it even though the deluxe edition should have installed the booster pack already. I have sent lots of emails to EA but all i am getting are useless automated or cut & paste responses. As of now there is no real resolution to this issue. If EA helps me out I will update my post otherwise think before buying.
Other than that an awesome game. The titan mode is the real winner here. I have been involved in some serious fights around and inside the Titan for supermacy. You have 14 maps of intense battles and the game rewards the players who played the most with more effective weapons as well as armor unlocks and a persistent talent system. I will however, seriously recommend all newbies(until you have unlocked some weps and armor too) to stick with armored vehicles and only try to engage one-on-one if you have the advantage or are in a group. Otherwise you will be relentlessly farmed by players who have uber weapons than you for a very long time.
