4 out of 5 stars A GREAT COLLECTION OF ARCADE CLASSICS 8.25 OUT OF 10   March 24, 2008
1 out of 3 found this review helpful

Did the only reason you people purchase this game and give it poor reviews just for Tecmo Bowl? Wow, you missed out on a lot. There are 11 games in total in this package, all but two are fun. So I will review the games individually.

BOMB JACK- Score: 8 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: Your basic task in this game is to collect all the bombs in this stage as fast as possible while avoiding enemies. You rack up points with how fast you complete it and for collecting the power-ups provided to you to destroy enemies by being invincible for a short period of time.
GRAPHICS: Bright and colorful environments really bring out the old arcade or 8-bit look in good ways. Character and enemy designs look nice for an old game.
MUSIC: Cartoony and over-the-top, but there's nothing wrong with it. Sometimes however, the music is repeated for other stages.
GAMEPLAY: Functions good, very responsive, and a lot of fun to play. Jumping mechanics are a little iffy though.
OVERALL: There is a good replay value to it, it's very addicting, it's a lot of fun, good graphics, creative environments, and cool character designs.

TECMO BOWL- SCORE: 7.5 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: Well, it's a football game that is considered a classic by many people before the time of Madden. But, if you're looking for the NES original, you won't find it here. Instead you get the SNES remake which wasn't really a factor for me, I had a good time. Unless you're a rabid fan of the original version it shouldn't bother you too much.
GRAPHICS: The vibrant 16-bit look is definitely present in this game, so it looks good. The animations are good and the game is very colorful all around.
MUSIC: Not much is present, and what is here is not impressive at all.
GAMEPLAY: Everything functions as it should, controls work good. Sometimes I did get confused as to how to pass the ball and to do certain things but the game made up for most of the faults. But, if you've read the other reviews there are a lot of things missing in the remake of the classic NES title, so be warned about that.
OVERALL: I had a good time playing this game, most of the gameplay functions as it should, good graphics, and it will pass the time if you're bored even if it is missing some things from the original.

RYGAR- SCORE: 8.5 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: Picture what would happen if you were to throw Simon Belmont from the 8-bit and 16-bit Castlevania games into a prehistoric setting, gave him loincloth to wear and gave him a mace; that right there is basically what this game is; a prehistoric version of Castlevania, except you fight a large number of very wierd creatures that are not related to vampires, the game is harder, and it's one-hit kills.
GRAPHICS: Environments look good, but the character models aren't so great looking.
MUSIC: Repetitive, not very interesting.
GAMEPLAY: Despite faults in music and graphics, the gameplay is wonderful and feels very much like Castlevania, but more challenging. The controls work great, but platforming feels a little sticky in some areas.
OVERALL: It's a great adventure filled with puzzles and great challenges that are a lot of fun, so the other flaws are very minor in comparison to a really fun game.

PLEIADS- SCORE: 8.25 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: This is a space shooter that feels very similar to the old Atari games like Planet Smashers, Millipede, Centipede, Warlords; just to name a few. Your task is to use your space craft to defeat aliens from destroying the city, if you save your city then you begin to travel through space and defeat more enemies.
GRAPHICS: Looks a lot like the Atari game Planet Smashers; this game looked like a pretty 8-bit game.
MUSIC: None, it's just the sounds of shooting.
GAMEPLAY: Like your average space shooter it's a top-down view, and you just shoot the oncoming alien ships. Controls work perfectly as they should. But the game is a one-hit kill game, you get hit once or touch an enemy ship you're dead.
OVERALL- What damages the overall quality of the game is the one-hit kill mechanic and no music, but that rarely hinders the fun you'll have from this game. It's most certainly a classic to be remembered.

STRATO FIGHTER- SCORE: 8.75 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: It is a side-scrolling shooter that feels very familiar to the SNES classic Gradius III, but not quite as fun.
GRAPHICS: Looks like a SNES game and looks just as pretty as any of the SNES's best looking space shooters. Explosions are pretty, environments are pretty, and the ships are nicely designed.
MUSIC: Nice score, but it could have been more
GAMEPLAY: Works good as any space shooter should, with all the bells and whistles of weapons as well. And just like other space shooters there's the one-hit kills mechanic.
OVERALL: The game is great, a lot of fun, and very addicting. Music is fine, graphics are pretty, and it's a finely crafted space shooter.

SWIMMER- SCORE: 3.25 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: You swim, and you avoid logs... too bad the game is crappily put together due to cumbersome, horrific controls and ugly graphics.
GRAPHICS: TERRIBLE!
MUSIC: GOD-AWFUL, VERY ANNOYING!
GAMEPLAY: Horrific controls, the sheer act of turning properly is even harder than avoiding logs!
OVERALL: The quality of this game is very, very poor. From the controls, to the music, to the graphics, everything is so poorly assembled you'll wonder why Tecmo even included this game instead of just letting it die.

SOLOMIN'S KEY- SCORE: 7.75 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: Your goal is to collect a key for every stage to progress to the next. This means you must destroy giant blocks to get to it, while summoning new ones to make a staircase to get there. This may sound terrible but it really isn't.
GRAPHICS: Definitely need a touch up, but it looks okay.
MUSIC: Not very much is here, but it's alright.
GAMEPLAY: Controls are confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of them. Block destroying and summoning works fine, but the responsiveness could use some work.
OVERALL: This game is fun, but a bit difficult for a lot of modern gamers. This game would be pretty good as a remake if the controls were worked on. A good game to pass the time.

STAR FORCE- SCORE: 9 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: This is yet another space shooter, but it's the best one in this great package.
GRAPHICS: Looks like an Atari game, again, in vain of Planet Smasher, or even the look of the SNES space shooter Gradius III.
MUSIC: Surprisingly cheery during your epic battles against aliens.
GAMEPLAY: This is a top-down shooter, the gameplay works great, the extra weapons are hidden when you destroy enemies, it's a one-hit kill game, and it's a helluva lot of fun.
OVERALL: Yet another great space shooter with great gameplay, good old 8-bit graphics, and everything a fan of space shooters could want.

PINBALL ACTION- SCORE: 7.25 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: As the title suggests, this is indeed a pinball game.
GRAPHICS: Look likes this game needs a little TLC, looks like a dated early 16-bit game.
MUSIC: Old and kind of annoying
GAMEPLAY: Works fine, ball physics could use a little work, but it's a fun way to pass the time.
OVERALL: This isn't the greatest pinball video game ever, but it's enjoyable nonetheless, just needs some work and maybe should get resurrected for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, or the Wii's Virtual Console.

TECMO CUP- SCORE: 7.5 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: It's a top-down soccer game.
GRAPHICS: Old and not very interesting
MUSIC: Puts you in the mood to play a good game of soccer.
GAMEPLAY: The basic controls function properly, it's a lot of fun to win games, but it can become a little haphazard to steal the ball and to pass it to other teammates.
OVERALL: Not the greatest sports game ever, and could use some polishing when it comes to gameplay. But, if you're a soccer fan this game is perfect for you.

SENJYO- SCORE: 2 OUT OF 10
WHAT THE GAME IS: Take a space shooter, make the space craft stay in one area and try and shoot enemies, and make it totally suck! Folks prepare to have your happy memories of space shooters trashed, stomped on, spit on, pissed on, vomited upon, and so much more! Undoubtedly the worst game in this package.
GRAPHICS: Perhaps the only highlight to this crappy game, it looks like an nice 16-bit game.
MUSIC: Total garbage.
GAMEPLAY: Never functions properly, you can't hit any enemies, and you will constantly die! OH JOY!!
OVERALL: Go play a real space shooter, you'll just end up hating yourself for playing this sorry sack of pure, toxic, hideous, unabridged horror.

So there you have it, all 11 games reviewed. All but two being fun. If you love retro games you'll most certainly love this game because it's packaged with many great games.

3 out of 5 stars For arcade nostalgia buffs only!   March 3, 2008

I bought this game because I fondly remember playing games like Rygar and Bomb Jack at the arcade or at the pizza parlor when I was a kid, not because any of the games on here are particularly high-quality. In fact, Tecmo's best and most well-known arcade title, Ninja Gaiden, isn't even included in this collection (they saved it to include as an extra in Ninja Gaiden Black for the Xbox). As is the case with Tecmo Bowl, many gamers don't know that the wildly popular NES version of Ninja Gaiden had its roots in an arcade title (known for its gory continue screen more than anything else). If, like me, you're a sucker for classic arcade compilations and enjoy a trip down memory lane, I'd recommend picking this up on the cheap (I got it on eBay for less than $10, brand new, including shipping). If you want to play the Tecmo Bowl you remember from your childhood, download it on the Wii Virtual Console for $5.00.

4 out of 5 stars Depending on Your Gaming Needs   December 14, 2007

First, you know if the titles are for you or not. If you need nostalgia or an interlude of "where are we now" or even want to hit a bargain bin, there are some good games mixed in with some bad ones. This isn't debating the validity of the purchase but hoping to clarify some of the mentioned titles and let you decide if the price is worth it.

Techmo Bowl - Really old Techmo game that is the arcade version. Personally I would rather playa later Tecmo Bowl (like 3) if I needed a fix that badly, but the side-scroller is still fun if taken is small doses.

Rygar - While the remake didn't really measure up, Rygar was a good game in its day. Another side-scroller, only this comes with implements that make it upgradeable. Better weapons, more heath; all the classic symptoms of a carry-over world.

Solomon's Key - Were I to buy this, I would buy it for this game. Personal choice and not well known, but its basically a game where you navigate treacherous puzzle-based rooms with destroyable blocks, fireballs, and monsters that are sometimes a bit horrible the first go.
The challenge feels rewarding somehow.

Bomb Jack - This was fun when it first came out and had a few entries later on. Basic but fun.

And the others are offshoots of things like Defender, of Frogger with water and logs to dodge, and Pinball with pretty pictures. Titles included and not directly mentioned: Starforce, Tecmo Cup, Pleaids, Senjyo, Swimmer, and Strato Fighter.

3 out of 5 stars Old games that are fun for about 3 minutes...   October 29, 2007

The arcade tecmo bowl is nothing like the original NES tecmo bowl, but I still wanted to give it a try. It's a pretty bad football game but it's cool to see where tecmo bowl started. To play on the Xbox 360 you have to set your console's video resolution to 480p instead of 1080.. that is sort of a pain to change back and forth. The other games are ok for about 5 minutes then I went back to playing Madden 07.
