1 out of 5 stars Constantly Jams   September 19, 2008
This is one of the most frustrating printers I've ever owned. Picked it up at Staples about a year ago because it was on sale and thought it would be good for the kids to use. (If I had it to do again, I'd spend another $100 and get something in the OKI C5100 / 5200 series -- those things are workhorses and mine hasn't jammed in the four years I've had it.)

The Samsung now jams just about every time a piece of paper is fed through. My guess is a bad quality rubber paper pickup is to blame. I tried some professional roller cleaner and it helped a little. Beware...

I loved this printer, I loved the compact size, I liked the toner cartriges, I liked the print quality; however once the rubber piece that pulls the paper from the printer tray wears...this printer is a basically a paperwight. It will not work again. Mine lasted eight months. I did not even use up all the toner! THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS PARTICULAR PRINTER...BEWARE!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Quality   September 4, 2008
I got this printer for school over a year ago and have been pleased with the results. Here's the rundown:

Pros:
+It installs its drivers within a few seconds. I upgraded my laptop, which now uses Vista, and plugged it in the USB slot. I was printing within a minute.
+It is fast. It takes maybe 20-25 seconds for it to warm-up after you assign it a task, but after that it spits out black and white documents in a second; full-color pages take up to 25 seconds.
+It is quiet. Unlike the jerking sounds of inkjets, this one just has a low humming sound.
+It's small. It's one of, if not THE, smallest *color* laser printers that I've seen.
+Good design for toner cartridges. They are even easier to replace than inkjets, if that can be believed.
+Dependable. I have yet to have it jam on me.

Cons:
-Toner supply. I print out full-color pictures with some regularity and the toner seems to take a drastic drop after every picture, around 2-5% for each one. And those toner cartridges aren't cheap.
-Picture quality. I don't really mind it, but it does not blend gradients together well. Or just blend in general. The results remind me of vector art. The color is vibrantly bright and the darks dark; they just stay separated.

VERDICT:

This is a good, affordable, dependable printer for a student's or office's needs, assuming that you are not a photography major or printing company.

5 out of 5 stars Works Great!   August 23, 2008

After a couple years I finally replaced the Magenta and Yellow cartridges. I replaced the cyan and black a couple months ago. I have never had a problem with this printer and for my purposes the color/text is great. I have used it for a variety of items (cards, envelopes and paper) and it has always performed well. Looking at the other reviews I wonder if there is an overall quality issue with Samsung (I guess I got lucky if there is) or a user problem issue. I went from a laser brother black printer (which gave out on me after a year) and jumping up to the Samsung laser color 300 printer has been great. I have an Epson 2400 for fine prints and a Epson 200 to print disc covers but I use the Samsung mostly for daily printing needs---web pages, pdf files, excel etc...and it is a great little printer---especially for the price...it is the easiest printer to replace cartridges for and while it will cost $100 to replace them all it is well worth it since they last almost two years with normal use (70-100 sheets a week)

3 out of 5 stars Good printer for the price - but there are issues   July 13, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I bought this printer at my local office supply store deeply discounted to $120 (they were making room for the new model). For what I paid for it, it's a nice little printer. It's small and quiet and very simple to use.

Setup was easy, with everyone going together intuitively. The toner cartridges feature an innovative design that makes them very easy to install. The software installed on my computer quickly and I was up and running in a few minutes.

There is only one button on the unit, a "stop" button that, counterintuitively, you have to press in order to "start" printing in manual feed mode. (This is a tiny quibble.) Of more concern are the quality issues. Text breaks up at small point sizes, and, at least when printing on business card stock, the toner flakes off the page too easily. Also there is a tendency for the toner to smear.

Of greater concern, large areas of saturated color (like photographs) tend to have at least one toner bubble where the toner has not bonded properly with the paper; when the bubble flakes off, it leaves a white spot on the photograph. If your main purpose is to print photos, don't buy this printer.

All in all though, the printer is fine for my purposes, especially for the price I paid. Colors are vivid, printing is quick, and overall the output is pleasing within its limitations. I'd say, if you can find a bargain, go ahead and buy it, and it will serve you well, but if you have to pay full price there are other printers in this price range that would probably be a step up.
