2 out of 5 stars awful   January 9, 2008
Let me start with this, I rarely trade in a game or give it away. I am very much a collector. I found this game used, dirt cheap and I remembered seeing an ad a while back. I picked it up and started playing... er watching. That's what I spent most of my time doing. Then I traded it back in. The cut scenes are long and boring. The humor is low brow and very rarely actually funny. The art style is strange... The characters and houses are similar to the sprites in other RPGs but everything else has a dark appearence. I can't say the whole game is bad because, I didn't get through very much. I just couldn't sit through the loading, the talking and the boring exploration. Games are supposed to be fun. This wasn't. It's just not fun. It's not like Tim Burton anything. It's just dark in appearance. That's it. Bottom line- for RPG collectors only. Then prepare to sit and wait .....and wait.

1 out of 5 stars don't waste your time   February 12, 2007

I rented this game b/c the cover looked very (tim) burtonesque. but thats about all thats appealing.

PROS: stan has some witty jokes that are actually funny, and you kinda want to keep playing just to see what he says next.

CONS: the load time as you progress is ridiculously long. but the thing that drove me insane were the fight sequences. basically it was the characters taking turns hitting each other. i can't stand "let me hit you and then i'll wait for you to hit me back" games!! (i prefer real time game play like kingdom hearts)

4 out of 5 stars Quite a fun game.   June 30, 2006

Okage: Shadow King is very unique and its graphics are lovely! It's a humorous game that always makes me smile. If you're looking for a different sort of RPG, Okage is a good choice.

The story: A young boy named Ari is very overshadowed; it seems he's barely even there. However, when his sister is attacked by a ghost and put under the curse of Pig Latin, this trait comes in handy. His father mistakenly summons the Evil King Lord Stanley Hihat Trinidad XIV (Evil King Stan for short) from a bottle but a pact is made with Stan. Stan will return your sister to normal if someone will become his slave and lackey. Stan is apparently the reincarnation of a dark lord from hundres of years ago, but was trapped in a bottle for 300 years due to "some deplorable error". During that time his magical power wained, and until he gets it all back he must borrow a human's shadow. Overshadowed Ari is perfect for the job, and so is forced on a quest to help the Evil King attain world domination.

Graphics: BEAUTIFUL! Now it couldn't be called the best, but it's certainly still right up there! They're extremely unique and interesting. Characters, especially, have a sort of twisted charm.

Gameplay: The gameplay overall is really fun, but is not without its problems. One of the most fun things about it is talking. You make choices and decide what Ari says and this effects your relationships and parts of the game. There's a lot of little extra tidbits to find if you look around. The main problem is the combat system. It's VERY simplistic; I sometimes find myself not even looking at the screen while fighting. It's monotonous and leveling up takes a while. Other than that, it's great.

2 out of 5 stars Eye Candy and one icon character   May 16, 2006

Evil King Stan is the only thing that makes this game worthwhile other than that its age shows with the turn based battle system.
The Characters are interesting but the game is pretty bland story wise and unoriginal at times.
Overall a great rental rather than a worthwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The best game I've ever seen.   November 10, 2005

This is a game that actually managed to keep me hooked non-stop, even through the parts that took me over a week to beat.

The main character's personality and situation was unexpected:
Finally, someone who doesn't have an angst-filled past and isn't 'oh-so-cool' or 'kind and brave'. The world's weight doesn't fall on his shoulders. He's not out to save someone or something, or find it/them. In fact, he doesn't even have any special powers.
He's just a normal, quiet teenage boy.
But just because he isn't like all the other tough, cool guys doesn't mean he's not worth a legion of fan-girls.
He's so cute, you just have to love him.

The art style was very strange, and it took me a bit, but I got more familiar with it and ended up loving it. My favorite part had to be the style of the eyes of the major characters.
The towns people were frightening but adorable as well.

The music actually worked well as background music.
Usually, I find that the background tunes are so peppy that you sometimes can't even hear what's going on because it burns a hole through your head.
The songs were peaceful, fit their settings well, and some of them are something that you could even listen to outside the game without getting sick.

The other characters were also wonderful.
They're obviously meant to play stereotypical roles, like 'evil king' and 'hero', but they're so bad at it that they end up assuming unclear but much more enjoyable roles. All of them were funny in their own way, but their personalities weren't drowned out by humor.

The plot was also odd but perfect. It wasn't destroyed by too many love scenes. Actually, I wished it might have had a few more, but it gave enough to keep me satisfied. I hear there were tons and tons of extra scenes that I missed.
Plus, they left us behind with many questions, which made it even more interesting because it wasn't all said and done at the end, really.

The only reason I put only four stars on fun was because the constant battles were annoying. They took a very long time, but I must say, were worth it all.
