Amazon.com Review If you have a PS2 and a lot of patience, you can now produce beats with MTV Music Generator 2 that are phatter than Fatboy Slim's, more melodious than Quincy Jones's, and that can get dancers moving like you're the long-lost sibling of the Chemical Brothers. OK, maybe not, but even the most musically inept individual can produce a (somewhat) listenable tune with this powerful music tool. Boasting more than 48 channels and 10,000 samples that vary in genre--including rock--MTVMG 2 is a small recording studio on a disc. You can either paste the samples together or alter them somewhat for creating more original sounds. Sadly, mouse support, which could have made navigating the many screens and menus less painful, is sorely lacking. Many of the instrumental samples we heard sounded quite sharp; however, the vocals were universally awful. The video-creation tool is a cute feature for making forgettable psychedelic light shows. If you're serious about creating music, you must purchase the optional USB sampler accessory, which allows input from most audio sources into your songs. While the sequel does feature some much-needed improvements over the original program, MTVMG 2 hasn't evolved enough from its predecessor to get a solid recommendation. Still, it's the only one of its kind for a video game console, and we like that even musical laymen can use it to make surprisingly decent tunes. --Mark Brooks Pros: - Thousands of samples taken from many musical genres for you to manipulate
- Powerful tool that fulfills its promises for the patient
Cons: - Not intuitive
- Cumbersome interface
- Vocal samples are horrible--all of them

This 'game' tests your creativity. February 1, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As you might already know, this game allows you to take samples and piece them together to make a song. But what's also great about MTV:MG2 is that you can start from scratch! You can create and arrange your own bass lines with a different line of 'instruments,' and you can make your own original beats. Probably the hardest to make an original composition in, is the Melody section, so you need to have some knowledge in music theory and keyboarding. If you're experienced in this game, you'll know what I'm talking about. There is also many ways to change the 'instruments,' so it isn't that hard to make your very own sounds! The vocal samples are only good for Trance songs, but if you want to make rap or rock songs, your going to need the adapter that lets you insert your own vocals and other music (I still need to get it, if it's still available). This game will consume a lot of your time, because it is somewhat difficult to make an original piece. An original piece that sounds GOOD. I have owned the game for about 4 months, and I am still making 1 song as original and good as I can. This game is also not very hard to learn. I started without reading the instruction booklet first, and I found the game easy to navigate. All you really need for this game is a love of making music and a lot of creativity. Also, a lot of free time if your serious about making good, original music.

this is the music industry dirty little secret. that the industry does not want you to know! you do not have to waste tons on money on a studio to start. this is the perfect tool for starters just get your hands on the sampler kit and will have access to tons of music.from your PC,turntables,cd,tape decks,8 tracks, and even straight from the radio. you can have a remix just in a few hours if you know how to work it! the MTV G vocal samples aren't the best.your better off doing your own...I have friends of mine that come over. and sing on my tracks. "dont use sampler mic" get a real mic, and hook it up to your mixer so you'll have better volume control. and use a a good quality, headphone jack from your stereo to the usb. connector. thats how I get quailty samples. from accapellas to beat samples. and U must learn how to cut unwanted sample time this will save Mem. space I have done 30 tracks using the MTVG1 & MTVG2. I think these are the best since sliced bread & govt. cheese. This is no lie I have my tracks are bieng played @ clubs/Parties and on the streets. they sound very professional. my people love it!... I hope sony comes up with a better MTV#3. ...

Beat machine, not a game, trust me i've got 20 beats already. Not dinky, keyboard beats, but REAL BEATS, some better than some of the songs out today. Trust me. Only thing is the sounds have to be thought out yourself on how fast or slow, or how a certain tune may sound, before you put it into a beat; and it could be difficult to find a particular sound you prefer. Also if just getting started it is difficult to create a real beat, if no one around you has played it before; the 1rst time you make one it may be "keyboardy" like. However bass lines such as the "slide drum" are forreal.The"2step" rythym beat and "low strings" melody are classic to a beat.OVERALL: Definitley an execellent source for beat makers or production artist; For any music preferrence.........
Takes Patience but a Nice Tool & don't forget the Add-on! May 4, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got the MTV Music maker for the PSX & My son & I had a BLAST with it! When the PS2 version came out I jumped on it! ... If you read thru the info that comes with the "game", there's an offer for a Microphone attachment that plugs in thru the USB port (one of them) this allows you to add your OWN vocal OR sound samples! I jumped on this thing REAL QUICK! It's shipped from the UK (where the game company is located) & it (at that time when it first came out) was SO HOT AND HARD to get.....they just shipped it in a plastic bag in a cardboard box! You got a mic, an adaptor to plug the mic into & this plugged into the USB port! MAN...talk about adding MORE versatility to this program! Check it out if you're REALLY serious about this item!
An above average music tool July 30, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
if you are a big music fan and know alot about how music works and how to create it, this game might be a little too boring for you. this game may last you up to 3 days at the most, but eventually you'll grow tiresome of this tool and want to move on to bigger and better things, like i have. this game used to be my prime tool for making what i thought was good music, but when you take a look at all the other stuff out there, this is very minor. if you're just starting out making music, this would be a fun tool for you to mess around with, and it's not too difficult to get started. so my recommendation would be for advanced users to pass this one by, but not so advanced users might wanna check it out.
