fun game October 8, 2008 My son and daughter put together their "Christmas" present to buy this game. My daughter is a "travel" hockey player and her brother plays "house" but they are both big fans of both the "real" game and this video game. Every day my son tells me who he has "signed". Keeps them sharp in between practices and ice games!
Disappointing NHL debut on the Wii October 7, 2008 It's about time that we got an NHL game on the Wii, and NHL 2K9 is here to be just that. Boasting controls that take advantage of the Wii-mote, NHL 2K9 sounds promising, but sadly it doesn't quite deliver the way that it should. The Wii's nunchuk controls provide some brilliant skating controls that nicely simulate real skating, but passing and shooting the puck with the Wii-mote is a different story. Passing and shooting end up being more awkward than anything else, which is sad considering hockey on the Wii could otherwise be a match made in heaven if done right. Where the Wii-mote controls really shine are during fights however, where the nunchuk comes into play as well. There's also the option of racing the zamboni around in between periods, but there's hardly anything compelling or fun about it. The biggest flaws of NHL 2K9 is that there isn't much that has changed from the previous versions of the game. Considering this is the series' debut on the Wii, this may not be so bad, but the game is definitely showing it's age thanks to the dated graphics engine and recycled commentary. Not to mention that the series' biggest claim to fame, it's realisticness, is slowly fading away. Compared to EA's NHL 09, NHL 2K9 doesn't measure up in terms of simulation, which is a shocker considering the 2K series has come out on top for the past few years plus. Flaws aside though, there's still some fun to be had with NHL 2K9 on the Wii, and one can only hope that next year the flaws will be addressed and the Wii will get an NHL game that takes advantage of what the console can do.

Mannequins with sticks. September 21, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think my cellphone has better graphics than this game. It is amazing that anyone rated this game more than two stars. The players all have this greyed out shaded look - and they all look stiff and characterless. Movements are stiff and robotlike. Announcers are lame. Gameplay is routine. Wii controls are a bit of a step back compared to playing with a plain old controller. 2K Sports should give a refund to all who buy this poor excuse for a hockey game. Played NHL 08 on the PC and THAT was 100 times better (and I have liked 2K games in the past). The after play cutaways are so bad it is laughable as the guys look like stiff mannequins with no personality. Makes hockey look boring. Camera angles are too far away and just not satisfying. My son (who plays every hockey game he can get his hands on including all the NHL HITS Series, NHL Hits PRO , NHL 5, 06, 07, 08 PC & Console...etc) - first thing he said when he turned it on was "Dad, what is wrong with the graphics?". His freinds came over and were all laughing at how stupid the graphics looked (he felt a bit bad for asking for this game after seeing how bad it looks). My son was so excited to get thie first hockey game for WII but was very dissapointed to see how BAD it looks (regardless of the controls). This game has convinced me to sell my Wii (while there are still enough suckers out there to buy it) as the graphics stink and I just can't get over watching the previews for game in HD and getting the actual game in what looks like 64 colors in terrible resolution with poor animations. WII and 2K - you stink. I feel I have been ripped off with this terrible looking product and most of the Wii games are not getting any better graphics wise. And while I'm on my rant - EA is dumb for neglecting hockey on the WII.
HMMMM September 14, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was looking foreward to this game for so long. After getting it and playing it for one day I have to say I am very disappointed in it. Graphics are crummy you cant read printed stuff on the scrren, the players all look alike and look as if they all have dark tans. Then there is the choppyness of the action on ice, at points during play the game sputtered and jumped. The instruction manual, ha what joke 5 pages of nothing , didnt realy explain anything outside of using the controls. Took me and friend an hour to figure out how to change rosters(and we both are fairly decent gamers),and do other tweaks. Also players are missing from teams I noticed Nolan Pratt from the Sabres was missing and few other from other teams as well. I wish EA Sports would put out a Hockey game for the WII now there's a hockey game to sink your teeth in!!! If I had to do it all over again I WOULD NOT BUY IT !!!!
