Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Despite its Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) license, Midway's CART Fury Championship Racing is an arcade game through and through. Players looking for a CART simulation will not find it here. Instead, they'll discover an easy-to-play game in which a broad appeal is hindered by several flaws.

For every positive aspect of this game, there's a negative one that more than neutralizes it. While the gameplay itself is very straightforward--reminiscent of Midway's Rush and Hydro Thunder series--its menus are quite frustrating. Although the graphics are good, the sound is extremely poor--the music isn't suited for CART and there's a noticeable lack of variety in sound effects. While the game features 15 real-life CART racers and seven actual tracks, the racers behave nothing like their namesakes, and the fictional tracks are uninspired. The artificial intelligence deficiency is the most criminal. The game's AI causes the computer-controlled drivers to behave very predictably, which makes several of your opponents too easy to defeat. The rest of your opponents are just as predictable in their dominance. This makes game sessions either unchallenging or frustrating.

The game's numerous faults make it difficult to recommend to serious racing game fans. It does have Midway's trademark user-friendly appeal, making it an interesting choice for casual gamers looking for easy-to-learn fun. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Easy for most gamers to pick up and play
  • Fun, arcade-style gameplay
  • Above average graphics
Cons:
  • Poor artificial intelligence
  • Long load times
  • Weak sound effects and music

3 out of 5 stars Avoid Disappointment - Read This First ! ! ! !   April 22, 2008
It is true they did make a CART video game once upon a time. However, consider yourself warned, if you are a fan of simulation style racing games this is most likely not what you are looking for. This is a campy, unrealistic, and unchallenging arcade style racing game. Do not be fooled by its claim that it has a simulation mode it is not any different from the arcade version. I bought this game knowing all of this information before hand and I do enjoy playing and laughing at this game from time to time. I am a fan of open wheel racing and I decided the cheese factor alone was worth the investment. How cheesy is it? Let's just put it this way; one of the tracks that you race on in the game is ON THE MOON, enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Really fun game that does require skill!   March 23, 2003

Ok, here is the honest truth.....I actually bought this game twice and took it back both times, thinking that is was really cheesy and silly. But then a funny thing happened. I played it with my girlfriend and she loved it!! We had a lot of fun racing every car and every track. Then, even after she got sick of it.....I KEPT PLAYING IT. I found out that it DOES take a LOT of skill to keep lowering your record times. I raced the various tracks HUNDREDS of times...each time shaving off seconds at a time...sometimes only hundreths of a second...with every tiny little time decrease being a direct result of precisely how well I drove each lap. Eventually I had ALL of the top times on EVERY track! It is very very exciting when you set the top time, especially when you are breaking your own records slightly each time! Give this game a chance....when you race it over and over again you will see that it DOES take a LOT of skill!

5 out of 5 stars Great ARCADE type racing   July 7, 2002

This game is one of my favorite games. The controls aren't overly sensitive like some games I played. Now, I actually have another game where my girlfriend can play with me and not get frustrated with the controls. The graphics are cool too. If your looking for a GAME not a Simulator then get this game.

2 out of 5 stars Glad I Bought it used!   June 5, 2002

As far as racing games go, if you're REALLY bored then maybe it's worth the time to load into your PS2 (and wait for it to load). The simulation mode seems decent, with the ability to tweak your car though even that is limited. I was disappointed to find there was no pit stops. There are shortcuts, but I found them to only slow me down. The sub-games are fun, i.e. demolition. But whose idea was it to make a two sentance background music EVERY TIME the game loads? (sloooooowly) It was enough to make me want to strap m-80s to it and blow it to pieces. Do yourself a favor and turn the music(I use that term loosely) off. Would not recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Midway as always...   February 17, 2002
Reading some of the other reviews kind of surprised me. There were a lot complaints about the "unrealism" and how it "shouldn't have CART in the title". I guess I went into this realizing it was from Midway. I have never bought a Midway game looking for realism. I bought NFL Blitz for the complete foolishness of it. I mean, wrestling moves, tossing players off the field, and the like in a football game? And NHL Hitz, another absolutely realistic hockey game. Midway has always had a record of taking serious gameplay and having fun with it. They also have done a good job at bringing the arcade home. Spy Hunter, Guantlet, Mortal Kombat, Paperboy and other classics are redone and re-released for our enjoyment...and maybe for a bit of nostalgia. If you're looking for a sports game, and looking for realism, Midway should definitely not be on your list. If you're looking for something a bit more zany and "unrealistic", Midway is your manufacturer. I only gave CARTFury 2 stars, simply because I felt it got boring a lot quicker then most of their other games normally do. I also felt that even with the arcade in mind, the handling was a bit less smooth then many of their other games possesed. I liked the idea for it, but think that their next installment will likely be better.
