If you followed Street Fighter you are likely famaliar with Alpha. The first two games were supposed to be a prequel of sorts to SF 2 only with better anime inspired sprites and smoother game-play. The third game could be debated to be a remake of SF 2 only with more characters while being re-vamped in the Alpha art style.
Regardless all the games in the collection are smooth and arcade perfect. In addition to getting Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold, and Alpha 3 you also get gem fighter which is a cute chbified mosh of SF alpha, dark stalkers, red planet, and SF 4 thrown together. I say this because there are characters from all those games. The only gripe is there are not as many characters as you may like and compared to the alpha games gem fighter is fun but a bit shallow.
You can unlock Street fighter Alpha 3 upper by beating the original SF Alpha 3 that has more characters but still not as many cameos as SF Alpha 3 Max.
The pros are obivous. In this collection you get the whole story line in the alpha universe. You get to see how beloved characters such as Ryu,Ken,Sagat, and Chun Li grow up and confront their demons. In addition you have interesting new comers such as the psychic telepath woman Rose and the spunky Ryu admirer Sakura. It's also great the character designs got an overhaul. Fighters such as Ziegnief, Vega, and Bison look alot better and have alot more personality then they did in SF 2.
In addition every character has many moves and the ability to charge adrenaline gauges to unleash more powerful variations of those moves. For the most part the fighting mechanics are very balanced. Even if you begin losing at the beginning of a match you can still bounce back with well planned enough strategies. Unlike King of fighters that is heavily combo-centric Street fighter often encourages trade offs of cat and mouse. For example some moves can be used to lure someone to get closer at which point you execute a hard hitting combo. Also you are encouraged to switch up between attacking high and attacking low. Besides for the Hadoken clones everyone plays very differently so do not expect the same tired tactic to win you every match.
I found overall I could beat each game with any character however admittedly it was much easier to defeat Bison with some characters than it was with others. Ryu,Akuma,and Ken are as ever the hard hitting perfect balance fighters whereas others such as the fast but weaker bunch like Cammy,Juli,Sakura,Karin,Chun Li, Vega,Gen, and Guy require more brains to use and more finnesse. Balrog,Ziegnief, and T hawk are the same heavy damage behemoths they were before. When you land hits it is awesome but since they have no projectile attacks or easy combo chains you have to be cautious so you don't get whittled away but the smaller quick combatents. My only gripe in the roster is Guile and Charlie have not evolved much. Their sonic booms and flash kicks are pretty pathetic as if capcom improved everyone's techniques except Guile's. You can combo with them but it's hard as hell. Then again maybe I'm just not good at using them.
By now you should know what you have here. Many good games in one collection that chronicle all of Alpha's story lines from humble beginnings to epic ends. Every game is fun to play by yourself or with friends that come over when you have a competitive urge to prove your gamer geek dominance. The only down-side in the PS-2 version is there is NO online play. To some that might be a big deal.
If you love 2D fighters you should have this in your collection. These games are on par with the quality of SF 3 third strike and they are not simply tired remakes of SF 2. If however you prefer 3D fighters such as Soul Calibur 3 and Tekken 5 there is nothing here that will impress you or convert you to the 2D faithful crowd.

This game is the shizzle! I love the "alpha" series of Street Fighter the most. The artwork and game play is raw. I love Marvel vs Capcom 2 but Im an old schooler when it comes to fighting games and nothing beats Street Fighter Alpha 3. Thank You Capcom and Amazon!!!

The games are all great and Gem Fighter is really fun to play I found my wife enjoyed playing it as well. You really need to play with two people instead of the game AI to enjoy it.

I had all of these games on the original Playstation so I didn't think I needed this collection. But after playing it on the PS2, I realize just how great it is. The graphics are arcade perfect. You see things you don't see on the PS1. There are no load times between matches. It's just a much better experience. This and Anniversary Collection are must haves for Street Fighter fans.

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (Released 2006.)
INTRODUCTION:
In 1995, as a holdover until Street Fighter III was released, to ride on the success of the five different versions of Street Fighter II, Capcom decided to go a different route to hold fans over. What resulted was Street Fighter Alpha, a "prequel" game of sorts taking place between the first and second Street Fighters (although Capcom later claimed the series did not actually take place in the series continuity.) This sub-series of the franchise became so successful in its own right, that as a follow up to the earlier Street Fighter Collection, Capcom decided to release an Alpha Anthology.
OVERVIEW:
Capcom released the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology for the Playstation Two in the Summer of 2006. It features Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold, Alpha 3, Puzzle Fighter, Alpha 3 Upper (Unlockable), and Hyper Alpha (Unlockable.) There are also unlockable bonus options/features.
REVIEW:
This is a Street Fighter fan's dream come true. At long last, we have a collection covering the entire Alpha series, and then some. If you're a fan of Street Fighter, specifically the Alpha series, you MUST buy this collection. Here's an overview of the series and what each game offers.
-STREET FIGHTER ALPHA (1995.)
First game in the Alpha series. This game featured some major alterations and departures from Street Figther II. For instance, the art style changed drastically, to more of an anime/manga look. Several old characters got new looks and overhauls to their special moves roster, and each character now has MULTIPLE Super Combos. The Super Bar from Super Turbo is now divided into three sections, and you can use a single section for a Level One Super Combo, or use two or three gauges for stronger ones. The gauge holds over between rounds, unlike Super Turbo. The character roster features Street Fighter II favorites Akuma, Chun-Li, Ken, M. Bison, Ryu, and Sagat, Street Fighter I characters Adon, and Birdie, Final Fight characters Guy and Sodom, and new characters Charlie, Dan, and Rose. Each character has their own storyline and ending, as well as a character-specific final boss. The game also introduced Alpha Counters and Midair Blocking.
-STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 2 (1996.)
Alpha 2 brought several new stages into the series, as well as slower-draining life bars for the characters. Several new attacks and characters were added, and several minor alterations were made to the fighting engine, all of which for the better. The newly-added characters for the Alpha Series were Street Fighter II characters Dhalsim and Zangief, Street Fighter I character Gen, Final Fight character Rolento, and new characters Sakura and Shin Akuma. Some versions of the game also included Evil Ryu, as well as Champion Edition Zangief, and Champion Edition Dhalsim.
-STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 2 GOLD (1996.)
Basically a revised version of the previous game. Adds in new gameplay modes, and the secret levels are now readily selectable. Secret characters were made easier to select, and there are several more "classic" versions of characters. Cammy is now playable as a secret character.
-SUPER GEM FIGHTER: MINI MIX (1997.)
This isn't an Alpha game, it's more of a bonus than anything else. The game is considerably less complex than the Alpha games, having one button for Punch, one for Kick, and one for Special. There is also a taunt button. The characters are drawn in a cutesy, super-deformed style. In battle you can get gems to level up attacks. Characters transform mid combo, often making cameos in the forms of other characters from other Capcom series. The fighting roster includes Street Fighter and Darkstalkers characters, and one from Red Earth. Playable characters are Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief, Sakuri, Ibuki, Morrigan, Hsiek-Ko, Felicia, Tessa, Dan (Secret), and Akuma (Secret.)
-STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 3 (1998.)
For this game the entire fighting engine got an overhaul. This is the game that introduced the "ISM" system to the series. Numerous new attacks and characters were brought into the series, as well as levels. New characters include Karin, R. Mika, Juli, Juni, and Shin M. Bison. Characters returning from Street Fighter II but new to Alpha include Blanka, E. Honda, Vega, and Balrog. Cody from Final Fight also appears. Post-arcade versions included additional characters.
-STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 3 UPPER (UNLOCKABLE)
Completing the single player mode of Alpha 3 unlocks Alpha 3 Upper, which includes the added character roster and new fighting styles from the previous console versions of the game.
-HYPER STREET FIGHTER ALPHA (UNLOCKABLE)
Completing each game (including Alpha 3 Upper) unlocks the all-new Hyper Street Fighter Alpha (or Hyper Alpha for short), a Versus Mode-only version of Alpha 3 that allows players to select from every incarnation of the thirty-four characters in the series. Hyper Alpha also features new ISMs that mimic the playing style of other Capcom fighting games.
OTHER:
If there's one complaint that must be made, it's that the extra characters from the Playstation Portable port of Alpha 3 weren't included. Not a big deal but it does need mentioning.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent collection, and I really don't have any issues with it. Any fan of Street Fighter will be doing themselves a favor picking this one up.
EDITION NOTES:
This is a fairly-recent game and most major game-specialty retailers should have it.
