1 out of 5 stars Putting and shot control horrors   September 1, 2008
This game is an absolute disaster and it is no fun to spend 10 - 15 minutes putting on each green. Don't know what the designers were thinking about when they released this game. It was a big mistake getting a new release and wasting $50. They should either recall all the games or quickly put out an update. I will be sending mine back very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Get rid of your old habits   August 31, 2008

This is the first time I play a real golf game on the Wii (besides what came in with the Wii Sports).

Being new and fresh to the game, I had to figure out the game physics and mechanics on my own, without old habits crystallized from playing TW 2007 or 2008.

I really enjoy this game. Yes, there is a learning curve, and you will miss and make mistakes. But like most games ans/or sports, practice makes perfect and after a while, you will be able to sink 40' puts fairly consistently. After all 40' puts are difficult, and should not go in all the time.

For those who do not like the 2009 version because things have changed compared to previous versions, just start fresh and enjoy the 2009 version as a new, never played game. Unless you are an old monkey, you can learn new tricks.

Overall, this is a great golf game.

4 out of 5 stars It's all good until you get to the green...   August 31, 2008
The interface and controls for setting up your character and navigating through screens are a lot better this year than last year.

We haven't tried the minigames or online play yet, but we're looking forward to that (my parents also have a copy of the game; I'm not sure if hubby and I can play against my parents, or if it'll just be one person at each house).

I like the challenge setups better this year; the short, medium, long descriptions give me a better idea what I'm getting into.

The club tuner is an interesting idea if you're just playing a video game, but seems like cheating if you're a real golfer looking for something to do when it's raining, so we don't use it.

Gameplay....

The manual settings for draw and fade are great because you don't have to mess up your hands artificially to play the game (the wiimote isn't as sensitive as a real ball and club, so we've always had to really overemphasize the fades and draws - it's awkward and fake).

The full swing shots seem a bit improved, though you still seem to need a steady tempo or it'll get confused.

The chips seem about the same.

Putting... they really messed it up by giving you a "5 foot putter" and a "10 foot putter" etc. What?? So to make a 4 foot putt with your 5 ft putter, you need to WHACK the ball. So unrealistic.

We've come up with some workarounds (put your arrow out to 60 ft to get a "real" putter, or move your arrow to the hole to figure out about the power you need to get there and use that... even if it is unrealistic).

So, it's not a total ruin of the game once you figure out the system, but it's definitely worse than it was in 08, and NOT realistic.

I like this game because it's one of the few games that hubby and I can play with my parents for hours; we have a lot of fun. Overall, with the better interface and online play, it's an improvement for that.

3 out of 5 stars Great Game Play - Difficult Putting   August 30, 2008
I have been playing this game non-stop for the past three days. The game play is great. The graphics are greatly improved from last year. The newly added tutorials are very helpful to new players. The addition of the online playing is great and highly addictive. You can play as either a guest or create an online account with EA. Either way, you can be playing somebody online within one minute of starting up your Wii. I have not had any issues with the online play.

The only portion of this game that I don't like is the new putting system. Last year's system was extremely realistic to putting for real, although aiming was difficult without using putt preview. This year, there is potential to come up short on a five foot putt with a full 100% swing if you don't set your aim correctly. Judging how far a putt is going to go is nearly impossible without hours and hours and hours of playing. I still find the need to use putt preview for 95% of my putts because I have no confidence on how hard I need to hit the ball. I have gotten very frustrated missing a tap in three foot putt because I didn't judge how far i needed to move the aiming target.

I recommend this game to anybody that enjoys this franchise or is interested in a more realistic golf game than on Wii sports. I am addicted. The actual golf swing motion is very realistic in this game. If you twist your wrists too much, you will hook or slice the ball. THe online portion of the game is an instant hit. If the putting system were the same as last year I would easily give this game a 5 star rating.

4 out of 5 stars Tiger 09 for the wii pretty much delivers   August 30, 2008
I have been a fan and owned every Tiger for the Playstation, PS2, and now this is the 3rd version for the wii. While I would agree that if you are a casual golf fan, 07 and 08 are great games and you can have a lot of fun with them for less money. To say that nothing has been done to this version to improve it however, is totally inaccurate. The graphics are hugely improved over the previous two years. Not only are they crisper and more realistic, but the frame rate is also noticeably improved. This is the first version of Tiger for the Wii that was developed by the Tiburon guys (The same group who puts out the Madden series)and it has made a difference. If multiplayer options are important to you, they too have been improved including about 15 fun new mini-games. Of course there is now online play and some other cool options to speed up your game a little. All the single player goals and options are pretty much the same, but this means tons of tourneys and venues that keep it interesting. There are 5 new courses and a total of 22 courses on the game. I can't speak much to the "All-Play" aspect of the game, but even without utilizing that, they have made it easier to "pick up and play." They have improved the tutorials and have a "club tuner" to help you straighten out shots if you have consistent problems. On another note,I have played for about 10 hours and haven't encountered any bugs (something that people complained about in 08's version--though very few of those had any significant impact on the gameplay). So again, I would say that this is undoubtedly the best Tiger on the wii. Is it a big enough improvement to warrant buying it if you have last years? That's hard to say because last year's was a great game, but I can say that I have absolutely no regrets about trading in 08 to get this one.
