3 out of 5 stars Wow High Voltage really messed up Tempest 2000   October 26, 2002

I loved Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar, it was one of my favorite games, I'm kicking myself right now for selling it. *sigh* Well I didn't want to buy another Jaguar just to play this game so I decided to purchase Tempest X, thinking that it was an improved Tempest 2000. I turned on my PSX and started playing, and what I saw made me want to throw the game out the window! They completely butchered Jeff Minter's classic, every one at High Voltage software needs smacked really hard for what they have done. You cannot see what's going on thanks to the new horribly implemented visuals. They took out melt-o-vision and put in some crumy transparency effects that aren't very transparent as they are hard to see past! Why 2 stars? Well the sound effects and music are great, and only the fact that it's Tempest, one of my favorite games, I am unable to give it one star. Do yourself a favor, get the Atari Jaguar version, if not that, then get the old dos pc version, which can be run in NT/2k/XP with VDMSound a sound blaster emulator, you can only have cd sound or game sounds, but even with only cd sound it blows Tempest X3 out of the water.
Update: Added a star because if you play the game on ePSXe with a good monitor the game is actually playable, still not as good as Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar though.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Update To A VERY Addictive Game!   October 11, 2000

The original version of Tempest was on my top five list of favorite arcade games--and Tempest X is even better. The game play is basically the same as the original, but there are also some colorful power-up features, and a great techno music soundtrack!

There are only a couple of drawbacks to Tempest X. The original arcade version of Tempest is included (if you'd ever care to play it), but it's also sluggish and crude. Also, Tempest X is so colorful that you can lose track of what's happening. However, in the higher levels, you'll be running mostly on instinct anyway.

That's the real appeal Tempest X really has for me. Once you fall into your own little zone, this game can swallow you whole!

5 out of 5 stars Just as addictive as it was 20 years ago!   March 1, 2000

Atari's gone and made Tempest X3 into a complete blast! Not only do you get the original Tempest, but you get the all new 2000 mode with pyschadelic colors and rich details. The new jump feature is priceless, and the game's addiction level will draw you in like never before. Recommended to retro gamers and newcomers alike- Tempest X3 is not to be missed!
