3 out of 5 stars Just Fun!!   June 6, 2008
I really just thought this game was a whole lot of fun. Yes the controls took a minute to figure out. But after the first few levels the game really takes off and is just a blast to play. I never did understand the story at all. For the price I highly recomend it. The movie which I have never seen before just like the game was very good, just alot of good old sensless violence.

4 out of 5 stars Good Deal   March 30, 2008
For the price you get a movie and a game so not a bad deal at all. The game itself is fun but the movie makes it worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Stranglehold is a Good First Person Game with a Movie Too.   March 28, 2008
The game came fast from amazon and you just could not beat the deal they were offering. The one I got was the special edition whioh included the movie Hard Boiled...a good shoot em up type of movie featuring cops and bad guys with lots of guns. Plus, some of the features in this first person shooter game are incredible. Especially, the one with sharp shoot effects...kinda like matrix style used to kill enemies at a distance. The ability to slide on stairways and still have the ability to shoot is another cool ability. The only problem I had was when I went online to do the multiplayer version of the game...just did not have anybody on to play against. Most likely this is due to the game being out a while and only a few people can participate in a multiplayer match. The graphicas are amazing showing hd type of game. The movie just seemed in to be in a standard format. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Not too deep but way too addictive   March 26, 2008
If you're looking for a complex storyline or 100 hours of gameplay, look elsewhere. But if you just want to work out some aggression by wasting hundreds of gun-toting gangsters, you could do a lot worse than Stranglehold. I sit down with this and I'm Chow Yun-Fat in a John Woo flick, sneering and cracking wise and diving and rolling and blasting and blasting and blasting some more. Destroying the environments in creative ways is a hoot, too. And the special moves are fun and very simple to use.

Aside from the boss battles, it's not a terribly hard game. And while it uses a checkpoint system instead of allowing you to save your progress, the checkpoints are pretty frequent, so that's not too annoying. I'm a fairly casual gamer (although I've been playing for over 30 years) and I'm cruising right along on the Normal difficulty level. I consider this a good thing, though -- I play video games to have fun, not to frustrate myself.

On the downside, hardcore gamers seem to get through this game in under 10 hours (I'm taking longer, but I like to take my time and enjoy the carnage). Also, every now and then after hitting a checkpoint, it crashes my system (a 60 GB PS3), requiring a hard reboot. It's not too frequent, though. And since it happens after hitting a checkpoint, I've never lost any progress because of it. On the other hand, I haven't had any real problems with slowdowns when a lot of action is happening. Finally, the bosses can be pretty frustrating. They seem to only take damage from a small percentage of hits. I have no idea why this is -- I shoot the guy, he flinches and grunts, and 9 out of 10 times his life bar doesn't go down at all. I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. The way to handle bosses seems to be judicious use of the special Barrage attack.

If a moderately challenging dose of Hong Kong ultraviolence sounds appealing, then check this game out. Note, however, that it's extremely bloody. If semi-realistic gore splattering everywhere disturbs you, then just move along to a different title. I absolutely do not play this game when my young son is around.

As for the included movie -- well, it's not so hot for a blu-ray, but it's OK. (I'm just referring to the A/V quality; the movie itself is classic!) It appears to be the same transfer used for the Dragon Dynasty DVD, with HD resolution, but they didn't include any of the extra features.

The original MSRP of this was a little crazy, but these days Stranglehold can be had for much less. It's definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Flippin Sweet   March 24, 2008
Hard Boiled has been my favorite action movie for about 15 years now so naturally I had to check out this game. This game is like living the movie on the screen, if you like the movie you will like this game. The fact this game came with an HD version of the movie is just perfect, what is not to like about this collector's edition package. Great job Midway, I remember when you asked about including an HD version in a survey I did...I am glad to see you all responded :)
