For Rental Only... And only if you're a Hellboy fan. July 21, 2008 I bought this game because I like Hellboy. I am VERY saddened that I paid money for this. This game is 95% punch things until they fall down. The same things. Repetitively. I would have died of boredom, had the game not been so short. It was about five hours, start to finish. Now let us speak of graphics. I got the PS3 to push a 46" HDTV. Comparing this game's graphics to Metal Gear Solid 4 or Assassin's Creed is a complete joke. It completely appears like this was hastily-made art thrown on top of generic models. The story arch is terrible. The only good thing in the game is the voice acting. So if you're you're a Hellboy super-fan, rent this game. If you're not, don't bother with it.
A good game based on a great comic July 12, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a good game, its fun, funny, and action packed with great graphics. Its a brawler and there's plenty to admire in this game. Fun all the way.
Unbelievably awful July 5, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Being a fan of Hellboy, I was kind of looking forward to Hellboy: The Science of Evil. However, also being a veteran gamer, I wasn't looking all that forward to the game, simply because of the terrible history of licensed video games. Well, I didn't expect too much out of the game, but what you get here may even be below your lowest expectations. Hellboy: The Science of Evil puts you in the shoes of the title character as you brawl through numerous hordes of baddies and take on the occasional boss. That's it. That's all you do from beginning to end in this game, and it gets boring very, very quickly. Not to mention that the game as a whole is quite short, quite easy, and features some technical issues that all combine to make the game quite bad. The game features some bland environments and choppy animation, and the clipping issues are more distracting than anything else. Co-op multiplayer is also available where you can play as Abe Sapien and Liz in addition to playing as Hellboy, but it offers nothing to improve the experience at all. Hellboy film stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and Doug Jones lend their voices to the game, but they all sound so bored that they just add nothing. No matter how much of a Hellboy fan you may be, avoid Hellboy: The Science of Evil like the plague. There's no challenge, innovation, or anything else to even come close to holding your interest.
Great game for Hellboy fans, only good brawler if you're not June 29, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well, I've only had time to make it to the second level so far, but here's my impression of Hellboy: Science of Evil so far. I am a big Hellboy fan, so I like the game more for the source material than an average gamer would. The game looks pretty good, not super great, and the controls are pretty good. It has an autosave feature with many save points throughout the game, so it's pretty easy to pick up and play if you only have a few minutes. Story has been a bit vague so far, but I think it will pick up from other reviews I've read. It is not based off the new Hellboy 2 movie; it has a unique plot line more based off the comics, which I like. A unique adventure adds more to the character than just replaying the movie you just saw. The characters look like a mix between the comics and movie versions, and the movie actors reprise their roles for the game. I have not played multi-player yet, but there are apparently 3 characters, looks like 1 may be unlockable or something. Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien, and "Classified," voiced by Bruce Campbell. Since I've heard Bruce is a potential actor to portray Lobster Johnson if they put him in a Hellboy movie, I am betting that's who "Classified" is. Using Hellboy's gun, the Samaritan, is a big clumsy as far as picking targets. It's pretty easy to change ammo types, though, and ammo is readily available for the most part. It's easy to tear up the environment and used debris as clubs or projectiles. There doesn't seem to be an upgradeable combat system, although there are several combos you have available. Heath regeneration is not a problem - either you put a finishing move on a small enemy or the game just gives it to you when you make it through a checkpoint. Camera controls something like God of War, and the right analog stick lets you adjust your aim manually. There is not dodge control, but then again, that doesn't seem to be Hellboy's style - he just takes the punishment and dishes it right back out. I bought it the day it came out, and it came with a free ticket to Hellboy 2. The cover had a small circle printed on the lower right hand corner saying so. Would have much preferred it been a sticker on the plastic wrapper, but oh well. I read someone compare the game to a Evil Dead game, and I agree. Definetely worth playing if you are a Hellboy fan, but maybe just a rental if you like brawler games. Definetely not a major let down movie game, like Iron Man, just a little disappointing when you think of how great it really could have been. I can't wait to fight a Kriegaffe (cybernetically enhanced bodyguard apes)!
