The DOWNFALL of EA's NHL series October 18, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
We were all mezmorized when EA came out with NHL Hockey (92) for the Sega Genesis. Then, we were in awe at actual player names AND stats, and the incredible gameplay mixed with blood and fighting of NHLPA Hockey 93(the height of the EA NHL series). The gameplay went down a little bit in NHL 94 but a couple of interesting new features were added...one timers and goalie control(too bad no fighting or blood).
Enter NHL 95. Man, I still remember being so stoked about buying this game. I mean, SEASON MODE!! CREATE PLAYERS!! Wow, all EA has to do is basically keep the formula the same and theyd have the biggest hit of all time!!
So what did EA do? Everything wrong, thats what. The classic awesome graphics of NHL 92 to NHL 94 were gone, replaced with junk. The red line made the ice look like a circus, and as one magazine review put it, everyone in the crowd looked like thelma from scooby doo!! HORRIBLE!!
But thats just where it starts. The gameplay. Compared to NHLPA 93, the gameplay in NHL 95 is a laughing stock. Its WAY to fast!! You cant control your player, or much anything else. It just gives you one bug headache. The speed of NHLPA 93 was perfect, not too fast or slow. Now I thought NHL 94 was a bit too slow but it was still a good game. But this is more than a tad too fast and is sickening.
New features include season mode...too bad it didnt come out a couple years earlier, its not enough to save this sack of garbage. Oh, did I mention the sound is ALSO horrible in this game? The music stinks.
This game was so bad, that in 1996 for NHL 96, due to MASSIVE complaints, they had to completely rip apart the game and re-do it from scratch. But rather than just admit that they f'd up and revert to the NHLPA 93 style, EA tried yet another completely new scheme, which they used until the end of the NHL run in 1998.
This game marked the end of an era for classic EA NHL gaming, and I hate it for it. But there is good news. Search the web for NHL 94 and youll find brave men and women who have updated rosters and even the goal crease and team logos. The true classic has risen from the dust and lives again. I myself am working on a "hack" of NHLPA 93, so keep searching yahoo for more details on that project!!
But as for NHL 95, steer clear. It is EASILY the worst game in the EA series and may be the worst hockey game ever made.
Hockey's Dream Game December 19, 2002 This game has a season mode where you can play any game for every team and keep season stats with season ending awards.NHL93,94,96,97,98 don't have this option, plus highlights of all the games with a brief description of player of the that game.NHL95 is the BEST hockey game for the sega genesis.
This is classic. May 24, 2002 Seven years after this is released, I am still finding opportunities to praise it. There has never been a better hockey game, excluding EA's new stuff on PS2. The graphics and gameplay are great, and this is the ultimate hockey experience.
Best Damn Game EVER January 3, 2002 This is the best hockey game ever. I would much rather play this than ps2. There is soo much you can do. Create player, shootout season, and practice mode. You can save user records. They throw hats on the ice for hat tricks. WHAT else do you want. This game is just too good
