Great Classic Restored July 8, 2007 This is a game that I had grown up with on the PS and it's still one of my favorites. The game is exactly the same as on the PS except with a little fishing minigame twist on the title screen. If you're a classic RPGer or if you just like great RPG's with good story lines then this is a game you have to try.
Best Breath of Fire Game May 1, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a review of the game itself as I have yet to play the PSP version.
You play as Ryu (Japanese for dragon, clever isn't it...) a young boy who is the last member of a clan of dragon folk. You travel the world in an attempt to better understand your powers and to uncover what has happened to your clan. Along the way you meet new party members as any good RPG would have you do and these characters range from a fairy princess to a thieving tiger man.
As for the mechanics, is all pretty standard RPG fare. Find monster, kill monsters, gain levels. What's cool though is in order to learn additional skills and spells you have to track down various masters and train under them. Certain masters are harder to find and sign on, but it adds enough variety to the standard level grind to keep things interesting without making for something overly complex or time consuming. Just some good ol' fashion adventuring action. The main character also gains dragon crystals as you progress through the game and you can mix these together or use them by themselves to transform into a variety of dragons during battle, all with a different roster of spells and abilities. Other characters also gain some unique skills and abilities but nothing quite as in depth as the dragon fusion system. For example you get a little onion mutant in your party that earns various breath weapons on top of his trained skills.
The game also allows you to fish, and the fishing in this game is actually pretty cool and well thought out. Depending on how you actually reel in the line will attract fish and there's a pretty good selection of gear. I don't recall what you earn from fishing but I do remember spending plenty of time fishing just because it was enjoyable, not so much a forced chore as other games.
There's another mini game in which you build up a little colony of fairies which will eventually yield you some of the best equipment in the game, and for all intensive purposes will serve as you base of operations. There's a lot of other stuff you can do with you fairies and once again it's certainly more fun than it is annoying or forced.
Personally I love the art for this game. It's vibrant 2D anime style graphics are second to none. I really wish more games were 2D and just bright and fun to look at like this game. If you're a 3D realism junkie this may not be your cup of tea but the overall look of the game feels like pages out of a story book.
All in all the game is fun, it's not going to be the greatest or most orginal RPG you ever play but it is simply solid and certainly a worthy addition to PSP ported titles.
One of the best for the PSP I've played. February 9, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have played many RPG's. Final Fantasy being the most note worthy. I consider this to be as good as 6 and 7 were. This is bright and colourful. It makes full use of the ultra slick range of colours the PSP is capable of. It doesn't suffer from page load breaks all the time like some of the PSP games I've played. Follow the merry band of little robbing monkies until they get split up. The lead character becomes the central role then as you search the length and breadth of the world to find your lost companions. Sounds easy enough, but add to that mutants, competitions, talking onions and turning into a dragon and you've got the recipe for hours of gameplay fun. Theres a game sharing mode and a fishing mode. When you don't feel like you want to enter the main game you can do the fishing challenges instead which is highly addictive. When the lead character cries, it makes you laugh!
I've not played the original but can well imagine how good it must have been. It's a very good game full of seamless RPG fun.
Still one of the best RPG's January 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Even though it's a remake of the PS version, BOF III is still great fun for any RPG fan. Now it's on PSP meaning you can take it and play on the go without being stuck to your console at home. I strongly recommend this game for its strong replay value.
