Amazon.com Review
The best extreme-sports game ever gets even better in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. The elements that made the last two games a success are back: tight controls, deep trick system, a wide selection of skaters (including Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska, Elissa Steamer, and others), and a slick soundtrack (featuring the Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead, KRS-One, Redman, and more). Adding to the already brilliant formula is a new trick, updated graphics, and Internet play.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players were introduced to the manual--a move that greatly revolutionized the series' gameplay. This installment introduces the revert, and while it isn't as significant an addition as the manual, it does add another layer to the already deep trick system. The game features solid graphics, but a level of detail was sacrificed in order to make the game's levels so large. There are a few frame skips and polygon clips, but these occasions are rare and do not overshadow the stellar gameplay.

Career mode is as deep as ever, with eight objective-filled levels. In this single-player mode, players traverse their way through some brilliantly designed courses to achieve high scores, find the letters to the word "skate," find hidden videotapes, and interact with level-specific objects. Two players can participate in the five multiplayer minigames, which include king of the hill, horse, and trick attack. Up to four players can join Internet or LAN games through the use of the PS2 Network Adapter or numerous USB devices. Supported USB Ethernet adapters include LinkSys EtherFast USB100TX, D-Link DSB-650TX, SMC EZNET-USB 2102, and SOHOware NUB100. Supported USB modems include Zoom FaxModem 2985L, Pocket NetSurfer NMT00700, MultiTech MT5634ZBA, and Actiontec USB56012-01CW. USB keyboards are also supported, enabling players to type trash online.

We tested Internet play using the LinkSys and a DSL modem; the action was very smooth with no noticeable lag. On its own, this is a top-shelf title, but considering its Internet capabilities, there's no reason for fans of sports, action, and platform games not to own Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. This game will satisfy them all. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • First Internet-capable PS2 game
  • Tight, addictive, outstanding gameplay
  • Gargantuan levels and plenty of objects to interact with
Cons:
  • Some minor graphics glitches

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff   June 16, 2008
This is a great game that builds off of the ideas set forth in the first couple of Tony Hawk Pro Skaters. New parks, little bit better graphics, and a good bails reel. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever.   March 19, 2007

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece even in this era (2007)   January 27, 2007

I had this game in the PC like 4 years ago, it had so many bugs that i was tired of restarting in a competition when the skater got stuck in a halfpipe (a very common and continuos bug) then i gave it as a gift to one of my students. But when i bought the PS2 2 years ago i bought also thps4, then thug and finally thug2, each of them a piece of art on its own. But i had that splinter in my mind from this THPS3, the game that in most of the gamesites and in most reviews of various magazines had 10 of 10 of score, but the game costed like 80 bucks because it was a collectors item, thanks God, finally the people of activision re-launched the game again in greatest hits (again, so this has to be like greatest hits of greatest hits of greatest hits) and i couldn't miss it, i bought it inmediately. Well, what can i say, the game is just PERFECT, as the score of so many magazines 10 of 10, the graphics shine and are state of the art, the music is perfect, the play control is awesome and the best of all THERE WAS NO BUGS!!, at least not during my watch, i can say that i don't know what is happening with the pc versions, but sometimes it has to do with the video card, other times with the sound cards, other times with some hardware i don't know. Well, to conclude, i can say that i am a Tony Hawk die hard fan, and this game is just perfect, it filled every spectation that i had. This game just does it, i love it, and i can recommend it to anyone who likes Tony Hawk games, if you haven't a TH title before i recommend you to start doing it, they're incredible games and a true gamers' must have.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic   February 26, 2006

After enduring many mediocre games for the PlayStation 2, I came across a few glowing reviews of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Despite all of the compliments on the game, I had my doubts. The game came out in 2001, so would it be dated? I went ahead and bought myself a copy anyway. I did not make a bad choice. The graphics are great, the gameplay is incredible. Sure, THPS3 might not have the enormous levels of THUG, but there are still tons of things to do in every level. Though the game is very easy to beat, the replayability is amazing. Each time you beat the game, a new secret is unlocked. From skating as Darth Maul to playing classic levels from THPS1, the secrets are always fun and surprising. Featuring many different pro skaters, the variety never gets old. A perfect score from me, and may you have many fun-filled hours playing this game.

Pros
<Can play over and over again until the skin peels off your little fingers
<Unlike THUG (Tony Hawks UnderGround), this game is about skating (Tony Hawks PRO SKATER! Not Tony Hawks get off your skateboard and throw fireballs at each other)
Cons
<Some tricks take a flick of the hand to do and others you probably need an extra hand to do
<GLITCHES!!!!GLITCHES!!!! MORE OF THIS GAME IS GLITCHES THAN HALFPIPES!!!
